A: Dark brown, and fairly opaque...minimal head

S: Smoked peat malt, ancho pepper notes, minimal hop aroma

T: Smoked malt, chocolate, cocoa, and pepper notes, mild hop bitterness, very inviting

M: Slick and somewhat unusual for a Baltic Porter...not sure it really is a Baltic.

D: Would get this again and again...almost a rausch beer.

330 ml bottle, it had a date on there but I don't remember what it was, poured into a tulip glass.

A- Pours black with a large khaki head, good retention and lacing.

S- Fruit, milk chocolate, bready malt, a bit of roast, very soft and rounded aroma.

T- Less sweet than the aroma, with heavier emphasis on milk chocolate, bread, a bit of roastiness. Some sweetness from dark fruit, molasses.

M- Medium-bodied, soft, creamy feel.

O- A really nice beer, very flavorful but nothing too aggressive, easy to drink and a great bargain at 15 kr (less than $3).

Appearance: The dark chocolate colored liquid is covered by a film of tan that breaks apart into a ringlet; leaves a nice, webby pattern behind

Smell: More licorice, molasses and char than chocolate, though there is a sweet character underneath

Taste: Chocolate, up front, with licorice and char building by mid-palate; after the swallow, the molasses adds a bolder, sweeter dimension along with a hint of dark fruit; some smoke underneath, in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A very nice beer (more Foreign Export Stout than Baltic Porter, but having elements of both styles) that has a range of subtle flavors

This bottle was discounted and is stamped either 010708 or 010709, I can't make it out. I suspect it is at least three years old.

Two fingers of foamy tan head, and an opaque, dark brown body. Great retention and good lacing.

The nose has a trace of the promised licorice, but a significant tart presence that I'm pretty sure is bretannomyces related. Which I don't think was supposed to be present in this beer. Having been on the shelves so long, I feel that maybe the staff might've tried it to judge the batch, but the clerk told me that many limited allocations he doesn't even taste because they are so sparse.

Yes, this is soured, or infected, or whatever you want to call it. It's not *bad* though, per se, but I imagine this is different than it was intended to be. It's got a pretty bold and bitter malt and licorice presence which works pretty well with the vinegar-y tang. Bit of a surprise, but not totally unwelcome. In fact, without it, this might be too bitter and syrupy/medicinal for my taste.

It's a bit foamy, not great feel-wise.

Well, it was soured and probably a bit old, so take my opinions with a grain of salt, but it's a porter so it should survive (although an 08, if it was one, would be pushing it), and the infection would've been present (if subdued) at time of bottling.

A: Very deep brown at the edges when held to the light, but the bulk of the body is dark black. The head is tan, and full of fish eyes, there is almost a spongy texture going on at the top of it.

S: Thick and malty. There is a dark chocolate coffee thing going on, but there is also a lot of a smokey character, it almost has the sweetness that I associate with cherrywood smoked malt. The finish is black licorice.

T: Dark chocolate, with coffee. There is a lot less smoke in the flavor than the smell would lead you to believe. This guy has a lot of dark bitter chocolate flavor. The finish is earthy and pungent.

M: Medium in body, the carbonation is fine and the level seems appropriate for the style.

O: Overall very enjoyable, I like the dark chocolate flavors mixing with a touch of licorice. Very nice.

Bottle date of 01 07 09

Black color with a small head that quickly settles to a thin cap. A little bit of sticky lacing is left on the glass.

Aroma is dominated by roasted malt. Smoke is the only other thing I can identify. This is really a Foreign/Export Stout type of beer.

The flavor is also full of roasted malt. A little burnt and smokey. Licorice is tasted but barely plays a role. Surprising amount of yeast esters come in the finish and helps wipe the palate of burnt bitterness. Alcohol is not detected.

Plenty of body here. The carbonation is well done. Nice creamy texture present.

Needs to go under another style like many beers misidentified in the Baltic Porter style. A good Export Stout from Denmark.

330 ML bottle poured into a CCB snifter
Thanks to Baggio for the beer and Sendsilk for the glass.
Much appreciated to both.
28/04/12 exp date

A-- Poured a dark cola color and settled plain and simple black. No light penetrating the glass. Half finger of dark brownish chocolate head. Head fades pretty quickly to a light brown film. Half circle of lacing on the side of the glass.

S-- Interesting smell. Went from original earthy chocolate, coffee and herbal licorice to a chocolate, Carmel covered orange peel that was still very earthy, or shall I say dirty and herbal. Interesting.

T-- Cold, grity, and old earthy chocolate and coffee. Get Carmel and vanilla as well but really more about the earthiness of this.

M-- Vanilla and Carmel in the front and coffee and licorice in the back. Lots of coffee acidity in this as well. Very clean with a lot of acidity in the finish. Low carbonation and medium feel.

O-- Nice beer. True to style. Not overbearing in any way at all. No gaps or issues with this at all. Alcohol is well hidden and a lot of character to this. Would try this again if got the chance.
