I love this place! There beers are very good, the atmosphere is awesome, and the food is great! Usually they have a good selection of specialty beers aside t=from their normal dozen or so. They have beers to match all different kinds of tastebuds. Stouts and porters, to pilsners and wheats. The place have been open for well over 10 years, and the beers have always been consistent. The food at every Great Dane taste the same, which is amazing. And you would think that it would be cheap bar food, but it is not. An actual full fledged menu to go with that great beer. Good times at the Great Dane - Downtown Madison.

I really like the decor but the downtown location is always so crowded. If I can I grab the couches across from the pool table and I'm set! Always a good time, good food, good beers-havent found a favorite yet tho. Overall a decent place, glad to see their growing.

On our way home from vacation we stopped at the GDB in downtown Madison for lunch. The place is in a neat older building with alot of character. The atmosphere inside during lunch was good...I could only imagine during happy hour when everyone comes in to tie one on after work. The quality of food and beer were awesome. The service was good, but a bit bored....maybe because it was during the lunch time. The selection of food and beer was also great. The taste of the food was really good....we had the thai chicken and webster street salad. With three kids meals and drinks, a six sampler, two adult lunch entres came to $50....I thought was pretty good.

The Dane is my favorite place to go for great hand crafted beer and the best atmosphere I have ever visited. There is nothing better than enjoying a great beer on the patio in the summer time. However, the food is not as good as it used to be. I don't know how else to describe it but to say that it has less flavor. I used to always get the apple wood smoked bacon cheese burger. This is no longer an option on the menu, but there is a bacon cheese burger that just doesn't taste as good as the old one. One menu item that is still available and is still delicious is the cheese and artichoke dip appetizer. I love this so much, I have ordered it as my meal. My value rating is subjective. I rated it a bit pricey because the food quality has reduced and the prices have increased. Its about $10 for a burger. Its not necessarily expensive, its just too much for what you get. Had the quality of food stayed the same, I would have rated it as reasonable. That said, it is still my favorite place to hang out in downtown Madison.

We had an outstanding experience when visiting this place.
The atmosphere and place itself are excellent, in a great old building in the core of downtown near the capitol. Overall decor is old pub-type, i.e. old building with brick walls but traditional decor with lower ceilings, etc., rather than modern or redone industrial building, and nicely appointed. There is a nice bar area with a raised larger dining area somewhat separated from the bar area with nice booths and tables.
Beer quality we had was excellent.
Service was friendly and efficient, laid-back but never slow.
Selection was outstanding , with a great selection of German/Czech-style lager-types, alt, British ales, American, and more. They had several cask choices, a big plus.
Food was outstanding, far above the usual pub fare. Salads were huge, made with fresh, good-quality ingredients, and one was with excellent steak beautifully cooked rare-medium rare, tender and juicy. They were particularly impressive given the rather moderate price. Kids' choices includes happy-face fries, which are not only fun and unusual, but were cooked really perfectly.

Good selection of food that is more or less pub grub and comfort food. Partial to the Mad City meatloaf, personally. Usually a good selection of beers on tap, but my go to is Stone of Scone. Food not expensive, beer a bit pricey. Service has always been top shelf IMHO. This is a must stop when I am in Madison, and I have taken business associates here on several occasions. Nice pub area, excellent pool hall area, clean. Crowd is usually lively but somewhat more restrained, shall we say, than bars closer to UW. Fun place, usually packed.

Spent a week in Madison and made it here every night... If you want to check out one of the Great Dane's, this is definitely the one to go to. The selection is awesome, with rotating casks regularly. The place is full of pool tables, shuffleboard, TVs to keep you entertained... and even has one of those new self-serving tables that you can rent out. The food is amazing for bar food... highly recommend the grilled cheese, but you have to add bacon. Service was good and prices are fair, especially if you're there fore happy hour when you can get a pint (real pint) of anything for $3.50. The beers are all quality... nothing seems hurried or mass produced... even the light lager is fully enjoyable. This is by far my go-to spot in Madison.

Finally had a chance to check out this place and was very pleased. The atmosphere was okay - a typical, dimly lit pub-style establishment. Plenty of energy in the place, especially with the Packers game on TV. The service was fine, not particularly noteworthy in any regard.
What really impressed me was the quality of their beer and food. The menu was fairly large with plenty of options, both typical bar fare and some unique WI themed choices. The burger I had was done exactly how I like it, down to the brittle crisp of the Applewood bacon. Both beers I had were also exceptional - the Scottish was very good and the engine pulled porter was one of the better beers I'd had in months. It's always nice to see a brewer take a "standard" type beer and do it so well that it catches you by surprise.
Will definitely go out of my way to visit again.

As has been mentioned numerous times previously, Great Dane is a brewpub conveniently located in downtown Madison. It sits on a corner and is actually fairly large on the inside. There is a bar area and a section with tables and booths.
The beer offerings tend to lean toward the English spectrum with about 8 or so standard year round offering and 4 or so season or rotating taps. Over the course of many visits of Madison, I've managed to have about a half a dozen beers from GD, but I've never been blown away by any of them. While they're almost always technically solid, they also tend to be cautious, "user friendly" beers. Enjoyable, but I'd rather get my kicks somewhere else.
The food at GD is much like the beer. Burgers and sandwiches dominate the menu, but there is a lot choice, including some vegetarian options as well as the option to choose locally sourced meats and cheeses. However, much like the beer, the food plays it safe: It's good, better than average even, but it's not great and I couldn't see coming here for the food alone.
Overall, a decent brewpub, but with The Old Fashioned and Cooper's Tavern within walking distance, I'd rather be somewhere else.
*Kid friendly. Child menu available.

This place is a decent-sized place on the corner of a few streets near the center of Madison.
Me and my friend sat at a bar type place near the front door. They were offering a glut of beers so we ordered a sampler. Some of the beers (Prageur lager) were pretty good. Others were simple brewpub fare.
We didn't eat so can't comment on that, but the service, especially the bartenders was extremely good despite the place being totally packed to the brims.
Overall it is a solid and worthy stop on a Madison downtown pub crawl.
