I haven't had too many Scottish ales this only being my second (I'm counting scotch ales as a different category) but I really enjoyed this one. It's very drinkable and not too heavy but still possessing a rich malty flavor. Funnily enough on the can it describes the hops as being barely perceptible but I detect a very noticeable hop finish.

A somewhat bland and earthy taste, with a slightly watery mouthfeel that is common for some of the KBC beers. There is nothing special about this beer, but I would definitely drink it.

12 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 9/16/2016. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with solid retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of raisin, plum, fig, apple, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, light nuttiness/toast, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Okay aromas with balanced dark/bready malt and fruity yeast notes; and solid strength. A bit too fruity/yeasty, but not overwhelming. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, apple, light nuttiness/toast, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, dark fruit, light nuttiness, herbal, wood, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying sweetness after the finish. Minimal dryness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and fairly creamy/grainy mouthfeel that is good. A bit thin and stale feeling, but not watery. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is a decent Scottish ale. All around solid complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. A bit too thin and yeasty, but a solid style example. An enjoyable offering.

Great brew! I love Scottish ales, but sometimes they can be a bit heavy. This one is just right. Just like one would expect, it pours a deep reddish-brown, has a decent tan head and smells yeasty and of fresh-baked bread. The malts really stand out, and the brew has a slightly sweet finish. Since it's not a really high-alcohol brew, you can have a few and not get too full or too trashed. Highly recommended!

A - A dark honey color with white head
S - I got some dark fruit, earthiness, grass. Once it warmed some there were some hints of oak/wood
T - Some more dark fruit but overall kind of subdued and not that great. Grass and earth on the finish.
M - Thin for this style of beer with light to medium carbonation.
O - Run of the mill. You could do worse, but nothing special or unique about this beer.

This is one of the beers you can not compared the can with the draft. To really get the greatness of the Scottish. You will have to come to houghton and get a pint off the tap.

On tap at the brewery. Another weak beer. I had much higher hopes. I guess a brewery in a college town is bound to do well. Faint peat earthiness, again, its watery.
