Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a 12 oz. mug.
This beer pours a gorgeous dark amber to brown, but crystal clear with an off-white head that lingers a while. Not a strong aroma, but what is there is dominated by sweet, grainy malts. The flavor is dominated by roasted malty sweetness with a nice light hop finish, just enough to balance the malts. The body is medium with enough carbonation to keep it from being too heavy. Crisp and refreshing.

Bottle served at the Spatenhof, already poured into a 500 ml mug by the staff. On to the beer:

The beer arrived with two fingers of head, a light chestnut color with amber hues, and leaving a few strings of lace around the mug. The aroma is pleasant, not too sweet. Mild toast and raisins comes to mind....hmmm, raisin toast? Having previously tasted a Lowenbrau Original in the state years ago, I had a dampened impression of the brand, only to be pleasantly surprised how this tasted. It has a deep taste; toasted with some raisin, light grassiness, chocolate covered raisins, yet never goes too sweet. It also feel nearly full bodied and very smooth.

A very good surprise indeed. I wouldn't mind to see this variety imported into the states.

Brewed in Russia by InBev, 4.5% ABV.
Pours dark brown beer with two-finger bubbly beige head. Good caramel aroma and a taste is caramel too, slightly roasted. Well-balanced bitterness, light body, moderate carbonation. A water of the brew seems not very well to me. That's probably a difference between original german beer and local licensed. Anyway, it's a good one.

A dark mahogany colour with hint of ruby, bordering on black with a thin cap after the huge, brownish-white head fades away.

Clean smelling. A mix of roasted malts & caramel with not much else that is noticeable. It could have done wilth be a little more complex.

Not the most complex dunkel but it's not a bad beer. Roasted malts & barely account for most of the flavour with a little sweetness in the background with some caramel, then a semi-bitter finish.

Smooth with a light fizz in a beer that is on the light side of medium bodied. It goes down well, but not overly.

A pretty average dunkel here in most respects, it is pleasant enough but it is also pretty straightforward & lacking in complexity.

Consumed 1/09/2010- from notes.

Green 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A- Dark chestnut brown with ruby highlights topped off with a one finger khaki colored head. Pretty good retention and decent lacing.

S- Muted caramel malt.

T- Malts are much more evident as well as a caramelish sweetness and a little something else that I cant put my finger on.

M- Medium bodied, not much carbination. A little sticky but not in a bad way.

D- One of the best Dunkel's I've had, definitely wish I'd picked up more than one.

When I was in Munich this was one of a few bottles that I stashed in my back pack when I was heading out on the train. As the dunkel style was the hardest to come by (even in Munich), I figured I'd get a few "darker" beers on my way out.

This beer pours a light amber brown that nearly looks like perfection in a beer. It is darker, but not excessively. It doesn't have much in the aroma, but what is there is dominated by sweet and grainy malts.

The body is nice with a light carbonation, and the flavor is dominated by sweetness. It is malty and sweet with a good light hop balance. It is quite typical of any Munich beer to be light on the hops, but have just enough to balance the malts.

This is one of the better Dunkels that I have had, and if I am to see this again, I will definitely pick more up!

Prost!

Had this beer in the resturant at the top of the Zugspitze (highest mountain in Germany). I did not even know this beer had a dunkel version, but I was suprised how good it was. I am partial to darker beers so this will make a nice addition. Rich smooth taste, nice laceing and foamy head. If you can find a beer dist. who can get it for you, I would definately recommend trying it.

A: Deep mahogany color with a fizzy tan head. OK head retention. Leaves a bit of lace.

S: Mostly dark roasted malt scents. Maybe a touch of grass.

T: Simple and straightforward. Dark malts dominate with a roasted flavor that sits on top of more subdued pale malts. Bitterness is just high enough to balance, but doesn't add a ton of flavor. Finishes with a lingering bready flavor.

M: Medium-light body has a bit too much fizz.

D: not spectacular, but still pretty decent. I wouldn't turn this down if it were offered to me.

Pretty standard fare here, used to be a dirt cheap sixer back in the day. Seems harder to come across now. Weak aroma very grainy, nice dark pour moderate head. Very quenching and drinkable. Flavor has some bite to it, good maltiness and very little hop presence. Average dunkel but decent for the buck.

I miss this beer so, can't find it anywhere and had to stretch the case I had until the brink of it going bad. 12oz bottle poured into a stein.

A: Dark Amber, but clear. Had nice off white head that built and remained, giving great lacing.

A: Malt and hops, your basic needs, if you are looking you might find some caramel and chocolate.

T: Malt, nuts, light chocolate, and light bitter hops.

M: Has good carbonation that keeps this beer from being too heavy. Crisp and refreshing.

D: It very easy to loose six of these at a time. Very tasty but still light. I miss the hell out of this brew.
