Notes:
Brewed to celebrate 100 years of the oldest hiking trail in North America, the Long Trail. This ale features a slightly sweet malt flavor delicately balanced by the use of centennial hops. This bigger beer goes down smooth, please indulge with moderation.
Our Imperial Red Ale has the traditional characteristics of a red ale with the addition of an ample amount of hops and a higher grain bill that yields more sugars during the brewing process; resulting in a higher ABV.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark red with a short lived white head. Aroma is of citrusy, piney hops, caramel malt and ripe fruit. Body is full and crisp. Piney hops, caramel, citrus fruit and cherry combine on the palate. Finish is long and dry. Well done brew.

This beer pours a beautiful deep mahogany brownish red, with a small lightly frothed head. Really interesting sharp smell on the pour - slightly sweet with just a small amount of dark chocolate. The taste is really bold with a good amount of body, I get some dark chocolate and then some slightly sour tanginess, almost citrusy, with a very tangy finish. Really interesting flavor in this beer, not sure I've ever had anything like it before. High attenuation taste however, which is why I give this beer a low score - also the tangy taste also slightly reminds me of red vinegar.

Bought a 22oz bomber of this for $5.99.
Pours a dark reddish brown. Not much head to it, sweet aroma. Taste is medium bodied, huge caramel sweetness upfront, followed by the centennial hops and a great maltiness. Super tasty and smooth, the 8% abv is well hidden. Finishes clean... this is a fantastic beer, well balanced and very tasty!

A-Deep ruby, two finger almost tan head with good lacing.
S-Malt, caramel, some hops but not much.
T-Starts with a blend of malt and caramel, continues with an earthy/dirt hop presence. Some bitterness.
M-Light to medium bodied, smooth, not that much carbonation.
O-A nice Red Ale, the hops go well with the malt bill for a decent beer.

Lots of aroma on the pine side, but the hops don't push through in flavor. Very big caramel and sweet malt. Syrupy red flavors don't establish themselves in the body, and it goes down smooth. A slight nod to that "cat pee" taste/smell we all seem to get from time to time -I've never bothered to find out what kind of compound brings out that for me. Not bad, but not great overall. I have enjoyed the trend in reds/ambers becoming hoppier, but it's not here.

This brew was served from the tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY. It arrived in a stemless flute glass. The color glowed a deep maroon, medium brown. No real head was observed, but sheets of tannish, reddish lacing appeared around the glass as we sipped. No sediment was noted, and carbonation appeared medium. The aroma was thick of lactic sourness, barnyard grass, huge citric hops which were very bitter, of grapefruit and metallics. The malts were predominantly caramel, with a bready yeast, and a serious sea saltiness. Our first impression was that this was a boozy hop bomb. As we sipped, steely malts mixed with bittering earthen hops. Muddy mineral and raw honey sweetness cooled things down a bit. The middle moved forward with more earthy mineral, with a sweetness brought forward by alcohol, and floral hops. Peppery booze, caramel, and brown sugar finish things off with sweetness, and a seriousness. Bitter grassy hops, again, mix here for a balance and final bite. The aftertaste breathed of peppery booze, earthy hops, lemon rind sting, and a fresh malty bite. The body was medium, and the carbonation was higher end. The mouth is hit with a sour, puckering slickness and cool astringency. Eventually the mouth is left even and wet, with little drying. The beer is very warming to the belly. The abv is appropriate, and the swill drinks easily.
Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was how earthy, bitter, and hoppy it was. These notes mix nicely with the rich, metallic malts, adding a balancing sweetness. The nose on this guy was amazing, with a great deal of funk, moss, and musk from the yeast, with a beautiful balance from the hop varietals which take several faces throughout. Very nice for the style.

Served in a pint glass.
Appearance: A transparent dark amber, an off-white to light orange head is thin... maybe an 1/8" of an inch off the body.
Smell: Bland, I pick up light malts brief scent of hops.
Taste: Bitter caramel, it does have an off-sweet feel to it. I like the malts but it lacks complexity.
Mouth: Medium carbonation, not hard to drink at all.
Overall: not a bad beer, but not in the category of greatness. It is well finished and makes you feel that you wish you had kettle corn popcorn while you were drinking this. Lightly sweet and easy to drink. Salud!

Clear reddish copper colored beer with a small white head that sinks rather quickly; lacing is strong. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and fruity hops; pineapple, orange, and pine all present. Taste is well balanced between these elements; an appealingly sweet maltiness, with aspects of caramel, toasted bread, and brown sugar, and a significant dose of pineapple and resinous pine hop notes. Bitterness is fairly muted.
Body and carbonation are both medium, with an added smoothness on draft, pretty good mouthfeel. This isn’t an exceptional beer but it’s highly drinkable and tasty and should appeal to fans of the style looking for a slightly sweeter, less bitter rendition.

A - Very little head sits over a hazy dark amber brew. A few webs of lacing line the glass.
S - Pine and grapefruit pith with a faint malty backbone. Nothing extraordinary - but nice.
T - A bit of pine hops and nuts, there is faint biscuity flavor, but also a mild coffee - like the water used to rinse a coffee pot. Aftertaste is of a very nutty earthy finish while faint pine lingers.
M - Smooth, medium bodied, refreshing.
D - A decent brew all around. Though it never wowed me, I did enjoy it thoroughly.

Poured a half inch linen head of moderate life. The body in masstone looks a clear burnt umber brown but when held to the light you see a deep maroon. It smells nicely of piney hops. The taste mirrors that smell and adds some citrus zest and a moderate sweetness. There's a fairly long finish showcasing the hops. Basically this is a red IPA. Nice.

Poured a lot dark then I was expecting. It's a deep red in color, but hard to tell through a glass. Very pleasant and sweet aroma, but nothing really jumps to the forefront. Great refreshing taste, a good bit of malt with some nice hop balance, again, nothing truly stands out. It finishes strong and crisp. Despite very little that I'd call 'noteworthy', it does stand out for its well rounded greatness.

Overall: If appearances can be deceiving, then scents can be as well. The bark of this beer is larger than its bite, though neither lack to impress. If the Queen of Hearts had a beer, this might be it.
Appearance: Solid ruby red color. Almost no head that leaves a fine lace.
Scent: Grapefruit; pine; hops; overripe berries
Taste: Large juicy flavor upfront, like a liquored-up Hawaiian punch, followed by the kick of the hops. Incredibly well balanced.
Mouthfeel: Crisp and cool with a bitter finish after the tartness fades.
Sampled from a Duvel tulip glass.

Enjoyed in a pint glass.
A: pours a dark amber color. Pours with roughly a 1.5 finger head of a light tan color. Leaves nice lacing when it clears.
S: Aroma is a nice combination of sweet malts and piney. Citrusy hops. Also I am detecting a possible cherry oak nose, but I could be wrong.
T: flavor brings out that cherry oaky flavor, but also resembles the nose, sweet malts and piney hops.
M: very refreshing brew, great flavor, carbonation, very light body. Finishes light but flavorful.
Overall, great brew! Very easy to drink, flavor combination is very good.

Pours much deeper than a red color. A very very dark auburn with a thin lace of off white head. Nose is pretty big with lots of dark malts herbal hops and overall boozey presence.
Just noticed bottled on date, beer is relatively fresh. A grape like sweetness up front with a spicy hop finish. Big chewy mouthfeel. Flavors are kind of all over the place and not making too much sense. Slightly cloying lingering grape finish as well. Not too pleasant. Hops balance this slightly but not enough. Some alcohol presence is noted on the finish as well.
Big thick mouthfeel with ill blended flavors. Not really sure what the intent was here. Its not undrinkable but its not good.
The beer comes together a bit better as it warms. The spicy hop finish starts to compliment the earthy fruit flavors a bit better but its still not spectacular.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass.
Very dark red pour, like a cherry wood brown finished. Foam fizzles out, leaving a light layer atop. Caramel smell, toffee too. Sweet malt taste with a bitter hop through the entire drink. Oily pine finish & residuals. Sweet and hop balances out together nicely - neither is too dominant. Really good red ale.

XMas present, poured into New Belgium glass
A-Pours a very deep ruby red. Almost brown in appearance, with deep garnet highlights. Off-white head, quickly dissapates with persistant lacing. Clear, no haze.
S-Stone fruit, pine, and citrus dominate the glass. Very inviting and pleasant! Biscuit, toast, and caramel malt in the background. Very subtle roast notes.
T-Very complex. A beautiful blend of deep caramel malts, subtle chocolate and roast give way quickly to the pine and citrus hops that persist and linger on the palate. Stone fruit flavors and subtle warmth in the finish
M-Very dextrinous, silky, and chewy up front, but finishes suprisingly dry and crisp. Likely from the high-hopping rates. Well carbonated, creamy, not biting like some hoppy ales.
O-Red ales are one of my favorites and this is an exceptional example of the style. Not as "arrogant" and assertive as a Bastard, but as equally good. Very easy drinking and inviting. I will definitely seek this out again. Hops and malt are equally balanced. Long Trail should be very proud of this beer!

Had this on tap after I switched over from an uninspiring pint of FA Back in Black.
Red color capped by a small off white foam head with ok retention. Lacing covers the glass. Nose is bland with light notes of biscuit and pine. Taste pretty much leaves me as uninspired as the previous pint. More sweet than I was expecting. Bitterness trys to cut in but is denied. The alchohol is well hidden. Medium bodied. blah.

A - Pours a dark ruby red color with a creamy layer that dies down to an even lacing.
S - Roasted malt and light pine dominate the nose, the overall aroma is biscuity and a little earthy.
T - Roasted caramel malt, biscuits, and pine bitterness all mesh together for an even blend across the entire sip, that is, until the end, there's also a slight earthiness to the grain. At the end, the pine bitterness gathers some momentum and builds after the sip to coat the mouth with moderate amounts of bitter pine. On the way down, the alcohol warms the back of the throat as well.
M - Heavy medium body, fairly smooth on the tongue with light pricklies.
O - This is a solid red ale. This particular bottle was bottled about two weeks ago which is why I snatched some up, worth a try if you like red ales. Nice hoppy character for a red.

Had this one lying around for a while. I think it aged nicely. The malts really meshed in well with the Centennial hops. The pine is there, but its a good balance. Probably would have been more nose if it was fresh. Worth a repeat, especially for the price.

The beer pours a hazy dark amber color with a thick frothy off-white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a solid crystal and biscuit malt scent; sweet with bread-like notes. It also has a piney hop nose that's quite bitter. The taste is decent. Again, it has a nice mix of pale and caramel malts. It's sweet, yet highly bitter as well with lots of hop flavor. It goes down slow and finishes warm with a mild alcohol burn. The high alcohol character takes away from the overall flavor. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a pretty solid Imperial red ale. It has a complex malt bill as well as a bunch of hop character.

Centennial Red begins with a surprisingly hoppy nose, full of citrusy grapefruits and hints of pine. A look at Long Trail's website reveals that Centennial, Nugget, and Chinook hops went into the mix. On the malt side (Two-Row, Caramel, Roasted Barley, and Chocolate), the nose has a lovely, sugary background that is part dark (chocolate, hints of toasted wheat bread) and light (Grape Nuts cereal, baking wheat bread).
On the tongue, the first flavors are sugars, with good fruit flavors (apricot, berry), which move quickly into a toasted grain base that is reminiscent of raw wheat and wheat bread. Slight hints of darker grains and toasted pecans pop out, joined by a good amount of grapefruit bitterness from the hops (55 IBUs). The sugars last well into the mouthful, but do die out near the end, revealing more of the chocolate malt base and grain flavors. The aftertaste is largely hops, with a good subtext of toasted grains, and lingers for a long time. Mouthfeel is a creamy, dry medium, and carbonation is medium-light.
Overall, this is a well-balanced beer that strikes a nice medium between sweet and hoppy, providing excellent sugar and fruit flavors, as well as grain and citrus notes, and so has something for everyone. The hops do overtake the aftertaste with slightly too much fervor, but the beer nicely hides the 7.9% ABV, and the main part of the mouthful is delicious.

A - Pours a rich dark ruby color with a finger of frothy off-white head. The head fades down slowly leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is a mix of sweet super rich caramel malts and bit of dark fruit and hops. There is also some booze noticeable.
T - Starts off with lots of rich sweet malt flavor with some bitterness. Through the middle, the flavor mellow out a bit and some hop flavor and sweet fruits come through. The finish is a mix of sweet malts and hop flavor with a bit of booze flavor lingering.
M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. The beer feels smooth with a resiny and warming finish.
D - Very drinkable. The beer starts off a bit sharp but mellow nicely as it finishes. The booze flavor is a bit more present than expected, but not really in a bad way.
