Notes:
Real India Pale Ale (IPA), as it was first brewed in the days of the British Empire, was not the carefully filtered brew that we call IPA beer today. The first IPAs were unfiltered and featured extra hops and higher strength as a preservative for the long trip from England to the colony of India. Our Traditional IPA ale is naturally carbonated, dry-hopped & unfiltered like the old days.

One of the better IPA's in bottle, at least here in Mass where it can be found reasonably fresh.
(I bought this at a small package store that keeps all its beer refrigerated). The distinctive taste of this beer is its pine flavor, one of the few on the market that has not moved toward a pronounced citrus flavor. The beer is malty but the high ibu's and the pineniness give it a distinctive dry character that is great with Stilton cheese. I've also had this on draft and would rate it equally highly.

Poured into a glass mug.
A: Slightly hazy golden yellow with two-finger, white, frothy head that lasted a long time. Great lacing.
S: Floral and citrusy.
T: Light sweetness and moderate bitterness. Toasted malt and hops. True to style.
M: Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Smooth and refreshing.
O: I thought this was a pretty good English India Pale Ale. Looks really nice, has a nose that improves as it warms, and has a really smooth mouthfeel.

Bottle from wegman's into a tulip
A golden amber w/ relatively good carity and retention. A thick white cap leaves plenty of lace on the glass. Smell is hoppy w/ floral esters and light sweet malt w/light sweet grassiness when swirled. The feel is pleasant / semi high carbonation light sweetness and moderate bitterness w/ mild astringency and generally good balance.
The hop favor is herbal and spiced w/ smooth citrus notes and mold toasted sweet graininess w/ mild lemony aspects and light tea-like fruity tinged supplementary tastes that go well w/ the mildly sweet malt and slightly fruity yeast.
I found this to be enjoyable and balanced a good example of an ipa from the east coast but not great - pretty drinkable and less likely to offend those who aren't die hard hop fans

12 oz bottle into pint glass. Date on bottle is Jan. 27, 2012, a bit of a danger sign for an IPA with a low ABV.
A: Moderate pour results in foamy 2-3 finger head which lasts quite a while, leaves sticky lacing. Beer is a cloudy golden.
S: Piney, some floral, some citrus, a little bit of malt. Pretty nice.
T: Lots of pine (too much, methinks), some sweet malts, floral and citrus present but muted. Not particularly balanced and some faded (perhaps from age). Pretty hoppy (hence the pine), but not as bitter as you would expect.
M: Medium bodied, pretty dry finish and pretty heavily carbonated.
O: Not a bad IPA and with low ABV is a nice, refreshing summer drink.

Note - To be honest I don't remember this beer since I had it several months ago but I wrote notes and it deserves its time to shine.
Appearance - The beer is a dark, off-yellow/orange color. The beer pours with a thick head that slowly thins out leaving behind a lot of thick lacing.
Smell - At first there are some smooth hops and grains. Lingering from the bottle rushes in a grainy, corn mash. The usual malt to citrus odor from a macro like a Coors.
Taste - Mild floral hops, some citrus (lemon/lime) and malts towards the finish but ending bitter like a tonic water. Disappointing, they almost had it.
Mouthfeel - Light, too light. It wasn't watery but it had no body.
Overall - A decent sipper for something like a summer BBQ

Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – Pours a golden color with a big white head. The head faded slowly over time to leave a moderate level of lacing on the side of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is heaviest of grapefruit citrus and pine hop and mixed with a biscuit smelling base.
Taste – The taste begins smooth and malty. This bready and caramel sweet flavor is soon meet with pine hop flavors that start out on the very subtle side and grow in strength as the taste moves on. As the pine grows stronger, other hop flavors of a light citrus and floral nature also some to the tongue. Overall the transitions are all very smooth and in the end leave a pleasant hop flavor on the tongue.
Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side for its strength, with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower side. The creamier body helps the nice flavor transitions, as well as allows the hop flavors to really soak in.
Overall – This is a nice, more session like IPA with very smooth characteristics overall. Pretty good!!!

Aroma: Bold hop bitterness. Mostly pine, some floral. Good amount of crystal malt for balance. Some faint darker sugars, cannot tell from what. Fruity esters, blood orange.
Appearance: Deep, dark gold. Filled with small black particles in suspension. Moderate bleach-white head. Good retention and lots of lacing.
Taste: Large dose of pine from the hops. A sugary kick comes in from the crystal malt. Some spicy black pepper, that's different. More grapefruit citrus that I got in the aroma.
Mouthfeel: Light to medium body. Mildly chalky, but also creamy, if that makes any sense. Finishes quite dry. Carbonation is mild to moderate and packs a sharp stinging sensation.
Overall: Goes down exceptionally fast. Lots of bitter with plenty of sweetness to balance.

Long Trail was a staple in my early beer drinking days... LT was a game changer in the Vermont beer world (kudos). Then came the IPA... at first it was similar to the Sierra Nevada Pale... which was my start to the IPA world and hops in general.
Now there are so many IPA's that blow this one away that I have to call it average.
To sum it up--- I now consider this a lawnmowing IPA and not a porch sipping beauty...

Poured from a bottle into a tumbler pint, the beer is a pale, clear, goldenrod coloring with only a hint of sparse film on top. Aromas of cut grass, a subtle bitterness, and a light citrus blend. The nose is mild, overall. Flavors are a bit on the roasted side initially, but then the cedar themed hops come through, with some pepper and oregano spicing on the lateral tongue. Resiny and bitter, there is a hint of citrus blending that highlights throughout. The aftertaste is more of the bitter, resiny, oily hops, with a very green feel overall. Surprisingly quick finish, with a sharp charring and slightly drying feel. Bitter linger in the back of the throat. Decent brew, and light on the ABV compared to most IPAs, so this one won't get you in trouble as fast.

Pours a hazy, very pale orange, nearly yellow. White head retains well at a little under a half-finger.
Scent is very mineral-y, some sweet and bready malts, a tiny bit of lemony hops. Nothing too enticing but not quite off-putting.
Taste opens thing up more. Hops are big on the herbal+grassiness, with maybe a light grapefruit quality to it. A decent amount of bitterness for an English IPA. Malts still have a big mineral+grainy quality, a light sweetness, and big bready notes coming out in the finish. Doesn't seem to mesh, feels a little off.
Mouthfeel is fine, good body, well carbonated.
Not bad, but really nothing to write home about.

I have drank many an IPA, and I have to say If you're planning on having more than six IPA's... THIS is the beer to choose! I drank like, 7 without noticing! So good! The lacing is perfectamundo, and the head and body are perfectly to my liking. Seriously, get some of this stuff. My favorite beer is Stone Ruination IPA, and this beer semi-reminds me of it, as well as camping out in the Green Mnts. Goodtimes. Goodbeer.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.
As with unfiltered, cloudy appearance, and a dull lemon yellow and brown amber body. Head is a solid white, fairly creamy with some decent staying power, not too uniform in composition.
Nose brings a grass malt, a good amount of faint toast, and some hop bitter lemon sense. Hop angle is a little burried, but a good toasty malt biscuity backbone is real enjoyable.
Palate has a little wetness too it, but a somewhat chalky feel. Hop presence takes off nicely with all the flavor in the finish. Explosive not really, but settles in nicely with a toast malt hinted from the nose. Carbonation seems just about right, but everything feels in control.
Overall even for English IPA nothing too impressive, but still a beer that's enjoyable, I could have this again.

Nice hazy golden orange color. Decent head of thickish suds only piles up to about 1/2 inch even after an aggressive pour. Nose is dull. Faint smell of hops and fruit. Taste is not overly hopped but very bitter aftertaste lingers for a long (trail) time. As the beer warms is has a medicinal, cherry like flavor reminiscent of Shipyard IPA. I remember liking this a lot more in the past. It was always a great bargain at ten bucks a twelve pack. Obviously batch control is an issue and I would be hard pressed to purchase this again with so many better local IPA's to choose from.

Pours a pale yellow color with a hint of orange, hardly any head, even less lacing on the glass.
Smell starts out with a sweet malt base, the hop aroma sneaks in but doesn't take the lead, slight citrus hint.
Taste is similar to the aroma, the sweet malt takes the forefront while a light citrus hop flavor comes in the aftertaste, the malt and hops are quite balanced as it would be for an English IPA.
Does nothing outstanding but it doesn't do anything wrong either.

Poured into a standard pint glass, color is deep, opaque orange/copper with a nice frothy white head that laces nicely.
Smell is nice malt, light toast and some caramel followed by some light citrus hops, hints of spice.
Taste is clean malt, similar to the smell with some light toast and caramel, decently solid bitterness follows with some hints of citrus.
Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of bitter but easily drinkable, nice flavors are lingering well.
Overall a very solid ipa, could be considered a stronger pale ale in some regards as the bitterness and hop presence is a bit light.

poured from bottle into a pint glass. Pours a light orange color with a good 2" head.
Good aromas of hops, citrus and a bit of navel oranges. Nice balance with the hops being noticeable, but not being too much.
Very good medium body with the feel being very good as well. Nice and smooth with flavors of citrus, hops and oranges
A nicely balanced IPA. Not overdone on the hops and the feel really makes it.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours a hazy golden straw color with about an inch of fluffy white head. Sticky lace.
Floral and piney hops are prominent in the aroma. Just a hint of toffee malts in the background. More of the same on the pallet. Nice balance of piney and floral hops with a nice malt backbone.
The body here is nice and light with good carbonation. Overall this one is a solid effort. Well balanced and really enjoyable.

Hazy straw color with sporadic bubbles. White head that fades but leaves some lacing on the glass. No sediment is evident.
Strong floral, some pepper spice, some pine but a lot of citrus.
Sweet malt up front. It's a lot like the nose. Tropical fruit and then a lingering metallic finish.
Light body and light carbonation. Easy to drink. Although, the metallic taste, it doesn't leave the mouth feeling dry.
Not a bad IPA. This is a simple brew and not in your face. Maybe a good IPA to a unsophisticated palate. A decent summer IPA.

A: Poured into a pilsner glass. Pours a cloudy golden color with a big white head that sticks and leaves lacing. I love the look of unfiltered beers.
S: Smells a bit sweet with a pungent hoppiness. Citrus and pine from the hops, mostly.
T: Tastes a bit sweet and bready with some honey-like flavor, then come the hops with citrus, pine and some earthy flavor. Finish is a bit dry and bitter.
M: Medium body, creamy carbonation.
O: A good beer. I wish I saw more unfiltered IPAs.

Poured into a becker glass.
Pours a cloudy honey with some yellow. Brew has a big nearly white dense head. Massive lace covers all side of the glass. Head settles and stays a thick pocketed layer the whole drink. Great looking brew here.
Brew smells herbal and floral hops. Some sweet malts and a yeasty bread. Good nose.
Brew is smooth and very mellow initially. Lots of good balance is tasted initially; barley, yeasts and floral, oily herbal hops. Good subtle sweet citrus and biscuit/cracker maltiness is in here as well. Brew finishes somewhat dry. The lack of dominate fruits hops here works really well and is a good change up. Very good tastes and mouthfeel here.
Not the most fruit hoppy IPA, but a very well balanced easy drinking brew here. This is a very good sessionable brew. A nice change in the hop profile from the typical IPAs brewed in the states. A case worthy IPA and at this price point I could easily see this being in my typical case rotation.

A: nice golden color. thick head but with big bubbles. settles very fast. good color
S: great hop smell. piney with come orangy citrus notes.
T: first you get the piney taste from the hops. not very bitter at all for an IPA. very oily. great after taste but goes away rather quickly. very refreshing and not dry.
M: needs more carbonation to hide the oils. light body but the oils are kind of confusing. its light but not.
O: not a bad ipa. i would definitely drink this often. not too much to make me not want another, and not dry to make me choose something else. a good refreshing IPA. definatly needs more carbonation

According to the bottle date my IPA is about 5 months old "072011", Damn!
A - A nice clear yellow tinted amber brown with only a slight lace ring of foam but it does have some sticky lacing.
S - More of an herbal gram cracker with maybe a touch of hops. Kind of like an ESB...
T - Sugar coated gram cracker with citrus hops and a bitter finish. It's really not bad old.
M - Light to medium an easy drinker.
Overall man long trail whats with all the numbers? If you just made it "072011" I would have known the date and would have found it fresher. Not bad old though...
