Swung by the Lowell Beer works today (08DEC12) with "bro" Artied2 for some grub and grog. Both led off with a pint of this black IPA.... (16oz for $7.50).

Came in a fat, rounded flute. It was a deep, dark brown, opaque and dense. Head was creamy, thin and light tan, with good stick on the glass. Nice aroma, with some roasty malts and rindy hoppage; solid! Mouth was also solid, with a medium body and fairly smooth touch on the tongue.

Flavor was also roasty, with a bit of choco and bitter coffee, plus a healthy amount of rindy, piney NW hop action. Great citrus/roasty malt combo! Aftertaste was solid citrus all the way; quite nice!! Prosit!!

I love black IPAs, and honestly didn't expect too much when I ordered this beer, but was pleasantly surprised at how tasty abd well crafted it is. I tried this beer at the Fenway location before watching the pats jags game.

The beer has a dark look and decent tan head with great lacing. My only knock on it is that it is more on the desk brown side than black.

The aroma has a nice dose of confection sweetness and cocoa and then some mellowed but still appealing grassy hops. The taste is way more roasted and hoppy than the aroma and has a great balance of the hops to roast I look for in a black ale. Nice citrus, semi sweet chocolate, hint of coffee, and a bittersweet finish. The feel is solid, appropriate carbonation and thickness, just wish it was slicker and sudsy-er.

A nice brew, very enjoyable.
