Thin big bubbled tan lace with a black as night colour. Smelled and tasted very roasty with big charcoal and light burnt flavours. Not astringent but the roasted malts do have a bite as well as the balancing hop bitterness. Finishes semi-dry with a residual, almost molasses like finish.

Presentation: On tap.

Appearance: Black with ruby hues on the edges in colour, lace is tan and creamy.

Smell: Definite roasted notes with a sweetness that pulls though.

Taste: Smooth, oh so smooth ... perfect roasted barley and sweet malt up front followed by more roasted flavours, touches of tartness and an underlying hop bitterness.

Notes: An awesome oatmeal stout! No overbearing roasted or bitter flavours. Excellent use of oats which add to the sweetness and the blissful mouthfeel.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler, the beer is a dark ruby-brown coloring, almost black, with a thin, off-white film that clings as you drink. Aromas of cream, chocolate, and coffee blending together for a sweet nose. Flavors are more towards the dark side, with a solid bitter coffee backbone giving rise to subtle chocolate and roasted characteristics. The aftertaste is the bitterness of the dark roasted coffee tones, with a bitter, dry finish. Tasty brew.

Had on 3/11/11.

This beer pours a pitch black color with a small brown head into my glass.

Coffee and cocoa present themselves in the aroma, which should be expected for the style.

The palate is dominated by flavors of coffee and cream. It's a simple, no-frills layout.

Mouthfeel is slick with only a hint of coffee remaining. Not much else to decipher here. Perhaps a bit thin.

This oatmeal stout is decent at best. It went ok with my meal.

Had on tap at Hingham location

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, opaque, black in color

Smell: sugar and roasted malt

Taste: cream, dark roasted malt, some charcoal, and oats

Mouthfeel: medium body, sweet start with a bitter aftertaste and backbone, high carbonation

Drinkability: I have been having a lot of this style lately and this one falls somewhere in the upper middle. I could have several and the beer tastes fine. I would like a bit more oat taste though.

@ Beer Work Canal St., my commuter rail is late hangout

Opaque black with dark hazelnut edges. A friendly one finger width sized head simmers down to a horseshoe skim of retention and leaves a lacey silhouetted tree in its wake.

Aroma is roast malt and a little dark roast coffee acrid astringency. Tastes like oatmeal stout tea. There's a tea-like swampyness that ruins an otherwise appealing chicory, bittersweet baker's chocolate and bready oatmeal stout.

Beer Works fizz carbonation. I don't know if they force carbonate to a different level or use a different method but it makes BW lighter beers crisp and BW darker beers fizzy. The carbonation was a deal breaker.

Roommate brought this back from his trip to the Lowell Beerworks.

L: Pours a deep brown/black color with a medium bodied and medium sized off-white/tan colored head that laces the glass a little on the way down as it fades pretty fast.
S: Smells of sweet roasted malts, nice sweet oatmeal, hints of chocolate and a slight sweetness at the end.
T: Tastes of sweet roasted malts, a lot of chocolate malt, some nice smooth oatmeal flavors, and then a bit of sweetness mixed with deep roasted malts.
M: Smooth, light bodied, perfect amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable, nice mix of flavors and texture, could have a bit more body to it.

A black beer with an ok head. Appearance was fairly normal, slightly thin looking. Nose was unoticable and thus poor(in a bar setting, but nothing worth noting). Taste was horrible, it was like a watered-down stout, no depth, no nothing, just bad. Mouthfeel was super thin and lame. I never want to drink another again.

Second beer of the night after the Red Sox game yesterday. Served in the usual BBW glass. Nice white head atop a jet black body of beer. Nice looking presentation. Smell was of peat and campfire, very lightly smoked. Flavor was very good. Nice hit of roasted barley then some of that oatmeal flavor, followed lastly by dark malt flavor. Mouthfeel was thick enough to satisfy a stout craving, but smooth enough to add to a high drinkability for this beer. I can see why this well-crafted brew has been a staple on the BBW menu for so many years, and it's a shame that it took me this long to review it. A favorite here.

The beer pours a dark brown/black color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has your standard black malt scent; dry and earthy. It's also a bit on the sweet side with maybe a bit too much chocolate malt. The taste is decent as well. It's quite smooth with an excellent oatmeal mouthfeel. It has a moderate black malt bitterness, yet leans a little in the sweeter direction. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a pretty good OS, but I've had better.

Received a pint of deep brown brew with a thick head that dissipatd quickly but left a little lace. Nice.

Nice deep roasted malt aromas and a little herbal element and sweetness as well.

Nice light coffee flavors with a good balance of bitter and sweet. Short and rather clean finish with a hint of carmelized sweetness. Very nice stout out of the tap.

A wee bit thinner than I expected -- maybe I'm getting bombarded with bigger beers and forget what tradition is all about.

Overall, a great brew and an easy drinker. Absolutely worth the try.

Had at Logan Airport on 5/19/09
This beer pours a deep brown, with some light passing through. One finger off white creamy head that left thick coats of lacing on the glass. Nose is of oatmeal and roasted malts. Taste - this one gets better as it warms. Initially it is quite sweet - some caramel malts and chocolate, then gets in to the oat and roasted malts flavoring. There is a bitter coffee bite at the end. This beer is a highly carbonated and lighter bodied (though still a medium body). It goes down very easily and not filling at all.

Received a 22 oz. glass from my server.

Appearance: Received a lovely jet black oatmeal stout that let little to no light through. Nice 2 finger foamy white head that lasted for a good portion of the beer.

Smell: Decent mix of burned malt aroma, and oatmeal.

Taste: Decent tasting oatmeal flavor right up front. Following that was a decent malt backbone, small portions of liquid smoke, and burned coffee.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied stout. Somewhat watery but thick enough to keep the stout style.

Drinkability: If the game I was watching went into another overtime, I would have bought another. Decent quality mixed with smooth easy drinking ability.

Final Thoughts - This one is a winner for Beer Works. I hope to get this again. This tap goes empty a lot. When its around I try and get one. Hope to see it around more as it mixes a session.

Had on my recent trip to Boston.

Pours a dark brown, almost black color, good sized head that fades slowly and leaves some good lacing on the glass.

Smell is strong in roasted malt with a bitter aroma.

Taste is similar to the smell in that it is very strong in roasted malt with that burnt malt bitterness, decent creaminess but could have been better.

Sample at Beer Works Fenway: This beer is a very dark brown color (almost black) but not completely opaque. Medium thin light tan head that dissipates slowly and rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Medium body with a coffee and chocolate character. Light hops and malt are present too. The finish is roasty with a coffee finish that is ultimately short-lived. Another slightly above average offering from Beer Works.

Came to the table in a 16oz. glass. Very dark brown with a hint of light coming through in the bottom of the glass. One finger off white colored frothy head had nice retention and returned with a swirl of the glass. Slight roasted malt notes in the nose with a touch of sweetness.

Thin and light on the palate, but very smooth and soft--20% flaked oats? that'll make it soft for sure. Roasted malt finish with a touch of bitterness and dryness in the aftertaste. Small touch of sweetness in there also. Not a very complex brew--probably only had one or two specialty grains thrown in. An easy drinking, low abv stout that could be a nice session brew.

A: Pours a dark, dark brown with a one-finger tan head. Lacing is spotty, but present. Head dissipates slowly.

S: Not much of an aroma. Hints of burnt oats, a little bit of malt, but not much else.

T: Burnt oats, a little bit of chocolate, a bit of caramel from the malt. Bitter, but not overpoweringly so. None of the flavors are that upfront, making it balanced, but relatively bland.

M: Watery for a stout. This seems to be a trend with stouts at Beer Works. They're always a little thinner than I'd want them to be. Light carbonation, but too thin.

D: Easy to drink, but not much reward in it. An OK oatmeal stout, but there are many others out there that are better.

Appearance: black in color with a creamy one finger head. Spotty lace develops on the glass.

Smell: faint but detectable roasted malts and oats are the lone aromas.

Taste: roasted malts, oats, hints of dark chocolate, and a touch of burnt coffee. Very soft bitterness rounds this out.

Mouthfeel: kind of weak for an oatmeal stout. Smooth from start to finish with a very brief lived aftertaste. Medium bodied, but a bit watery for the style.

Drinkability: easy to quaff, and minus the light mouthfeel there is a decent but not great flavor profile. This is a session stout.
