I had this on tap at the Fenway Park brewpub. I ordered it after seeing other people drinking something with floating rabbit turds in it, and wondering if I could do the same. Let's break it down:
The appearance was interesting enough to score a 4, with maybe 20 blueberries floating up and down in the golden beer. The smell and taste were ugly though, intense sweet flavors like Booberry cereal. The mouthfeel was a little thicker than the sugary beer would best be matched with, and drinkability is low as a result.

The answer to my initial question (could I do the same as the others drinking this beer?) was no.

Ah, the Beer Works Blueberry Ale, an exceptional blueberry ale overall, and one worth having anytime you stop by. It's great in a growler as well, and typically goes quickly whenever I have one.

A: A nice clear golden color, hints of copper around the edges. And the blueberries that the bartender adds in certainly make it visually appealing.

S: A bit of malt, a bit of hops, and a hefty amount of blueberry comes forth. Beer Works seems to do an excellent job with fruit beers in making sure the fruit is at the center of things, yet remains balanced.

T: Delicious. Blueberry through and through, complemented by a light caramel malt and a nice edge of hoppy bitterness. The hops last til' the end, leaving a slightly bitter aftertaste, lingering with the blueberry.

M: Nice carbonation, not too watery. Very nice example of this style.

D: High. This is an absolute session beer, especially in the summer. Whether sitting at home or hanging at the Beer Works, this is a beer you can enjoy for a long time.

I had to give the appearance exceptional because of the cool berry trick. The blueberries gently bobbing and diving in the beer is really interesting.

This fruit beer hit it right on the mark. The taste is of NATURAL blueberries not that chemically altered berry taste you find in some other beers. Those always remind me of wine coolers. Which reminds me, it also tastes like beer! Other fruit beers can tend to taste like fruit punch because of their sweetness. This blueberry beer has the perfect balance.

It's a nice apertiff before digging into some delicous beer works food. Or before making your way down the line of taps!

I drank this beer at both the Fenway and Salem locations both times it was great beer. I'll be honest I was a little skepical at first but after I tried it I loved it.

Appearance- It was different to see fruit in the glass but enjoyable.

Smell- Mildly Fruity with a slight hint of hops.

Taste- The same as the smell but not as sweet as you might imagine.

Mouthfeel- Was average.

Drinkability- Very drinkable and smooth

Another good fruit beer from BBW! Served on tap this beer is a fairly translucent golden color with minimal head, that might have been thwarted by the fresh blueberries! It smells slightly of blueberries but not overwhelmingly so. Thae taste also reflects the undertones of blueberries but it being onn tap, this was a really fresh taste that I enjoyed! The flavor was smooth and went down easily! This was an enjoyable summer brew!

We had this at the Boston Beer Works. It was unique in that it had actual blue berries dropped in the beer. These rose and fell as they released carbonation into the beer making for an intersting show.

The beer smelled and tasted strongly of blueberries and it worked for us. I'm not a big fan of fruit tinged beers but this was a nice exception. I wouldn't drink more than one at a go but for something different and tasty this was great.

Tasted On-Tap 09/30/05 at the Boston Beer Works - Fenway in Boston, MA.

Clear golden color with a low white head and nice carbonation which keeps the added real blueberries floating up and sinking at random ... Nice real blueberry fruit aroma and flavor with no extract character at all. Light bodied and refreshing. A nice fruit ale !!

Nice light head clear light golden color with, well blueberries in it. They bob up and down, like a lava lamp. Up...down...uuup...dowwwwn....

It has a malty, fresh smell with, well, a predominant blueberry fragrance. A good light ale flavor with a tad of bitterness, the blueberries are nice and sweet and the brew leaves only a mild aftertaste. Quite drinkable, if you want to cut down on the sweetness you can ask for it without the blueberries. Plus you won't look like a dork trying to shake that last blueberry into your mouth. Good stuff, probably a 2 pint limit though, unless you're just nutty about blueberries.

Colorful creamy white and purple head top this dark yellow, highly epervescent bodied beer. Served with fresh floating blueberries. Light aroma of ale, malt and blueberry. Sweet!!! This beer is overly sweet. A bit sour too - from the natural blueberries.

Interesting, but not a repeat beer. Better presentation then flavor. Despite this, Beer Works bartender 'Ray' says it is "the biggest seller, every year."

"The original blueberry ales are from the North West", says Tina, a friendly Bostonian. "I grew up in Washington...they were everywhere!"

OK...this beer comes to me with real blueberries dancing in my beer...how cool is that...it also had some decent lacing and was golden with a slight haze to it...

Aroma was all blueberry...
Taste had a decent mix of a sweet malt and blueberry...make sure you dont take big swigs of this or you'll have to chew on the blueberries...sip slowly and at the end spoon the beer soaked blueberries out and eat them...

Mouthfeel was thin but then you dont really want a thick feel in this beer...

Drinkability was a little low...you just can't drink alot of this...one was enough for me...

Draught @ Fenway: A very nice light, summer beer. The aroma is that of blueberries, no doubt helped by the addition of some blueberries to the beer. The color is a slightly darker, golden color. There is a decent amount of lacing. The beer has amedium to lighter body. Some wheat in there, i think. Actually not too much blueberry taste, except when you chew on a couple of them. It’s always on my list to drink when I go to Fenway Park (across the street!) Adding of the blueberries makes for an interesting taste. A very different presentation, but actually very good!

The two big spoonfuls of blueberrys added to the beer helped out quite a bit. One of the lesser local blueberry ales in my opinion. This has nothing on the Ipswitch / Eagle Brook, or the Wachussets for that matter. The blueberry taste is plenty there. A good brew, but not up to sniff with its peers.

Served with a dollop of fresh blueberries, before the beer is poured onto them, this leads to a beer that is literally a huge galloping golden bubbling mass. The uneven extra surface of the berries is a haven for the molecules of dissolved Carbon Dioxide and entices a phase transfer to lure them out of solution. For this reason, the Bluebeery Wheat Beer is the most striking of all of the beers served at the Boston Beer Works in Canal Street, Boston. A light golden body contains a mass of imperfect spheroids that raise and sink as the carbon dioxide slowly clings to the berries surface at the bottom of the glass, and alters their buoyancy. Once lifted to the surface of the beer, a release of bubbles renders the berries heavier than its supporting fluidic environs and it slowly sinks again. The constant psychotic rotation of the turbulent rabbit droppings can make you dizzy at times and lead to partial hypnosis, at one point I thought I was drinking a nice beer, but when I was snapped out of my trance by fellow BA neo06051, I realized that it was a sickly sweet offering that I found hard to drink and overtly sickly.
Something different, and worth a try once, at least if you like the sweeter beers.
Not bad, or awful, but just not for me.

Hmmm… still not sure what this is like?
Well it’s like drinking a sweet lager full of purple M&M’s and sheep shit.

I've had this countless times before watching a game at Fenway and each time I enjoy it more. The actual real blueberrries makes this a conversation piece.A light smooth ale with tons of blueberry flavor. The best part was eating the blueberrries still at the bottom and asking for another.

First off they dump a score of blueberries in the glass before they pour the beer over it. This induces a rocky head as the carbonation has more surface area. It’s a light brassy coloured ale.

Smells and tastes of mild blueberry, light bodied with a pale malt palate and a small but ample hop bitterness. Slightly dry though the blueberries add a drop of sweetness. Very drinkable though the blueberries are there to swallow whole … choking factor is low but looking like an idiot trying to get every little berry out of the glass does.

My wife managed to get the rest of the berries our with her pumpkin ale …

Presentation: On tap.

Appearance: Shaded gold in colour with a fine white lace.

Smell: A pleasing blueberry aroma takes over the nose.

Taste: Some crisp pale malt and a touch of grain with an even blueberry flavour which has a pinch of tartness. A hint of bitterness from the hops is found.

Notes: One of the finest fruit beers in the Boston area ever brewed. Real fruit was added, no extracts.
