Beantown was a transluscent brown/copper color with a low tan head that vanished quickly. The lace was decent. The aroma was caramelly and chocolatey with some floral bouquet. The taste was good with elements of caramel, coffee, flavoring hops, and a hint of yeast. Of course it was also a bit nutty. Mouthfeel was smooth and a bit doughy with some sweetness and hop bite. The finish was not what I expected. It was on the hoppy side - dry, bitter, and a little sour.

A- Very nice looking amber/brown body with a very thin white head that disappears quickly.
S- Not getting a whole lot besides some generic malt. No real sweet notes I usually get in nut browns.
T- Possibly some very faint hazelnut, but mostly just a brown ale malt taste.
M- Light bodied with good carbonation.
O- Not bad, but not a great beer for the style.

On tap at the source in Lowell. Pours a solid dark brown with a stingy off white head that was almost totally gone before the glass arrived at my table. Smells of caramel and toffee with a hint of chocolate and a smattering of earthy English hops. Smell is pretty good. Taste is malty caramel and toffee with a hint of diacetyl. There is an earthy, mineral bite towards the finish that builds with each sip and really ruined this one for me. Medium body and carbonation with a sweet slick mouthfeel. Somethings off in the taste here, I wouldn't order this one again.

@ Beer Works Canal St.
Bedpost brown wood color with a thin skim head. Then head begets thin horseshoe retention. Decent lace though.
I can't really smell anything other than the french fries down the bar. Maybe unsweetened iced tea? Taste is nutty hickory, slightly bitter sweet brown malt and leafy hop tea.
I don't usually get along with Beer Works carbonation but they toned it down for this English style. Nice.

Had at Logan Airport 5/19/09
This beer poured deep dark brown with a creamy beige head, nice thick lacing left on the glass. Nose is of malts and chocolate(though pretty light on the chocolate), and a touch of nuts. Taste is nutty, with roasted malts mixed in, the chocolate is very subtly blended in throughout with a burst towards the finish. Bit of a hop bite in the finish as well. Mouthfeel was lighter bodied but creamy on the tongue. I could sit with this one for a bit.

Served in 4oz. sample glass.
A: Very dark brown, almost opaque. Thin, weak lacing. Thin head.
S: Coffee notes. I don't really smell the nuts or the chocolate.
T: Coffee likewise noticeable, and nuts/chocolate less so. Hops more noticeable after a few sips. The sweet malt grabs you right away.
M: A little syrupy, but not too bad. Carbonation is just right.
D: A little too dark and heavy to keep on drinking it all night, but maybe just one more...

A: DARK brown, chestnut. A little bit of foam.
S: Sweet and malty. Maybe hazelnut?
T: Sort of a soy sauce taste. Dark roasted malt. A hint of coffee and again, hazelnut. A creaminess develops later. Very complex.
M: Velvety. Toasty aftertaste.
D: Great for one, but too strong for a second.

@ Beer Works Terminal C-Fenway, Canal St. or Salem?
Wicked dahk with creamy head and sparse lacing
Mild roasted malt-a little clammy
Hearty backbone with mild mat-yeast and alcohol sparse
Heavy mouthfeel-even finish
Sessionable but looking for more flavor for heaviness - still, this will do the trick in a pinch

Sample at Beer Works Fenway: Pours a dark chestnut color with a medium beige head that burns off steadily. Spotty lacing. Aroma of malts and nuts. Medium, smooth body with chocolate, malt and nut flavors. Slight hops do not do enough to counter the sweetness. The finish is sweet and lingering malt. Average all around.

the style categorization of this one is up to debate. please add your input. truth is, one could make a good case for calling this a porter
it's daaark, with rootbeer highlights. the head was short but tight
some choc in the aroma
the menu reads something about "subtle chocolate and coffee overtones", which is a bit modest...well, at least as far as the chocolate goes: the finish is big on itrich. the hops grow as the beer warms, as well. it's brown and roasty up front, then hands it over to the chocolate; if this were a porter it would be a brown porterrich, but not sweet
