Pours a hazy orange-ish to brown color with a light tan head. In the aroma, small alcohol and dryer fruit notes. In the taste, fruity and a small dry alcohol like note in the end. A smooth and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry fruitiness in the aftertaste. A bit fruity, but decent nonetheless.

11.2 oz. green bottle with a simple gold label with a white circle in the middle. Inside the circle is a dreary crude drawing of the German countryside. The back label has the Government warning and a best before date.
When poured into a simple Pilsner glass, this Dopplebock was a nice dark cola brown with a few amber highlights. The head of foam was about 1/4 of an inch in height and dirty white in color. It was one of those colors where it wasn't white or beige. Good retention that left behind a sting of rings and a spot or two of lace. I honestly like the color of this beer.
The aroma of this Doppelbock took the sweet route instead of taking the roasted road. The aroma was sweet with sweet malts, caramel, molasses, a little raisin, a few herbs, and a subtle whiff of olives at the end. It was an interesting aroma. The taste was similar to the aroma. It liked the sweets more than it did the roasted elements.
The taste started off with sweet malts. It was so sweet that it tasted like cola a little bit. Behind the malts was some dark fruits, caramel, molasses, and a slightly weird herbal hop bite. I like the taste of sweet Doppelbocks, but this was too sweet.
The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with little carbonation, and a sweet aftertaste. It wasn't candy sweet. It was more cola sweet. If I'm ever in the mood for a sweet Doppelbock, I'll pick this one up again. It looks really good, but everything else was...not so good.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.
Immortals and a doppelbock...a good pairing...? We'll see... Anyway, this stuff pours a clear garnet topped by a finger of glowing off-white foam. The nose comprises mild caramel, light buttery biscuit, a vague sense of miscellaneous greens, and a soft touch of mild cocoa. It's all really vague, muddled, barely distinguishable from background nose radiation (AKA smells). The taste holds notes of maple syrup, light cocoa, very light roasted malts, honey, and a bit of biscuit. The aftertaste, though, resonates with Band-Aid-like notes that blend into strange herbal flavors. The body is a rather lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a generally solid d-bock, not one I would ever put near the top of any list, but one that suffices as a tasty-enough choice, though that aftertaste does ruin things a bit.

Bottle into tulip glass
A – Almost a 3 finger light tan head has moderate retention, beer with no light appears nearly black with a little light it is a clear rich brown, a few strings of lacing 3.5
S – Roasted malt caramel, herbals, milder prune & mineral notes 3.5
T – More grainy than I expected, a strong herbal bitterness imparts an aftertaste that reminds me of a ricola herbal cough drop. Moderate spiciness and a very mild sweetness. The more I drink the more I’m recognizing what I’ll call an alcohol and hop zing. 2.5
M – Light to moderate body, watery on the palate, perhaps undercarbonated 2
O – Not a fan of this beer, I’ve not had a bock like it previously and nor will I again if I can help it 2

Single finger head Without significant lacing on a clear amber body. Aroma is mostly fit and toasted malt. Flavor is similar with dark fruit, toasted bread malts and herbal notes. Medium to full body and moderate carbonation. Overall not on par with the doppelbock genre I am familiar with but not a bad beer.

11.2 ounce bottle - Hop City in Atlanta, Georgia. Best Before: 10/02/12.
Appearance: Pours a very dark brown body with a slim, bone white head.
Smell: An unappealing sniff of grainy pils malt soaked in ethanol, hardly yielding little notes cherry cola.
Taste: Store-brand cola and a sweet thin drizzle of simple syrup for the pils malt. A dark fruitiness and decaying grass clippings introduces a sudden and surprising alcoholic harshness, which sort of embodies the taste in the cruelly long finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.
Overall: No need to make any excuses for this, as it's just a rather poor example of the style. I didn't finish the bottle, I couldn't finish it. I got 99 problems but a Bischoff ain't one.

best before July 26, 2012
A: Dark reddish brown with a thin head that disappears completely and leaves no lacing.
S: Faint with sulfur, sweet malt, fruit and alcohol. The sulfur dominates.
T: Fairly subdued flavor, and not a typical doppelbock by any means. Light toasted bread and herbal hops. Alcohol gives a medicinal characteristic. Not nearly as sweet as one expects.
M: Bubbly and very thin.
O: This is an odd doppelbock but not a bad beer. Not good, but not bad either. Only the unhidden alcohol impedes drinkability.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Dimpled Mug.
Appearance: Dark reddish-brown with moderate off-white head, settling to a thin line.
Smell: Caramel, spicy hops, cherry, molasses and soy sauce. A little mild.
Taste: The taste is...odd. Some of the aroma comes through (cherry, caramel, soy sauce), but there is also some sickly dark fruit, and something akin to gasoline. Then there is a sudden, strong spicy hoppiness at the end, along with a medicinal aftertaste. However, it does taste better (just slightly) than that description sounds.
Feel: Moderately low carbonation, medium body, tingly off finish.
Overall: While the worst Doppelbock accusations seem a little unfounded, it may be the worst Doppelbock I have personally had, so maybe there is cause for those comments. However, I could imagine worse.

11.2 oz green bottle (why?). Date on bottle says 10.02.12.
It ours a nice color, a deep reddish brown with a foamy off-white head that leaves some nice lacing.
The smell is kind of boring for a doppelbock.
The flavor is a bit better. It is not like a Bavarian doppelbock. It is actually pretty interesting to have a north-German doppelbock because they are rarer and a lot different. I would still take it over most American doppelbocks that throw way too much in to cover up shortcomings in their lager-making abilities. This one isn't as sweet and dryer than Bavarian examples, also more subtle. There is still a noticeable hop character to it. The sweetness takes up the back end though, with not hop bitterness to level it.
Overall not bad, but not up to par with Bavarian examples.

Something is way way wrong here.
Part of me says this tastes/smells like a crappy Doppelbock or Euro Dark; that part is the manifestation of the eternal optimist within me.
Another part says that this smells/tastes like fermented wrapping paper; that's just keeping it real.
Ugh. Two (ghastly) sips, then a drain pour.
Quoth the venerable BuckeyeNation: "...stale cocoa powder, bitter grasses, sheet metal and antifreeze..."
Also quoth the aforementioned BuckeyeNation, still venerable: "In fact, it might be the worst Doppelbock in the history of beer..."
That about sums it up.

A new offering at the local good beer store -- though my label doesn't look like the BA profile, it meets all the other criteria.
A -- Clear, deep chestnut brown with a sudsy, slow settling, off-white head.
S -- Sweet bread crusts with some light fruitiness back -- a bit weird to style, that.
T -- Same sweet bread crusts up front with some mild hop spiciness in the middle and finishing with a toasted bread character that is almost buttery in its sweetness, but not in a diacetyl way. Aftertaste is hot, peppery alcohol -- near phenolic, very dry.
M -- Mouthfeel is smooth and soft to a dry finish and the body is medium.
O -- Overall impression is a good Doppelbock, while not being the usual Optimator or Salvator in sweetness, the bready malt character certainly makes this palatable.
*Interesting that this Doppelbock comes from north and west of Frankfurt am-Main, not a Bavarian brewery. Makes me wonder if the drier character is more prominent in that area of Lagerland.

Appearance: Pours a medium brown color with no head or lacing.
Smell: Sweet malt and alcohol.
Taste: Again very sweet and malty.
Mouthfeel: light bodied and hard to avoid the sweetness.
Overall: Decent beer dominated by sweetness and alchol. One is enough at one time.

Pours a solid, clear brown with a moderate off-white head. Leaves a moderate lace. Smells of caramel, sugar, alcohol and dark bread. Taste is sweet, like sugary dough. Complex malts, a little heavy, but tasty. Rather overpowering syrupy mouthfeel and a cling of alcohol make this one good for a dessert or a single serving. I probably won't buy again, but not a poorly made beer.

Got this 500mL bottle at Amity Wine & Spirits in New Haven CT for $2.99. Crazy twist-off cap, I haven't seen one of those since the 80s on a soda bottle. Served cold in a chilled pint glass.
Clear deep brown brew gives a thin fizzy tan head. Nose is somewhat vegetal and earthy, like baby food yams... brown sugar, starchy grain, dried apricots, hint of citrus hop, maybe some cola. Yes that's it, just like sweet potato Pepsi. Taste is also kinda like a starchy cola, similar to the smell but without too much of the vegetal yam aspect, fairly sweet. Feel is moderately thick with a soft but abundant carbonation. Finishes with some ginger and lingering yammy sweetness. Alcohol is hidden very well.
Kinda meh... not bad in any particular way, just... meh. Too sweet? Too bland? Maybe. Very very vegetal and starchy... baby food, stewed sweet potato/ yam (can't say that enough). Lower Drink score for lack of interesting goodness and general feeling that I don't feel compelled to have it again (though the retro cap is quite a novelty).
This is like 7.5% ABV soda/ pop. Give it to an anti-beer person who likes root beer or Dr. Pepper and I think they'd be quite happy.
