Poured from 11.2 oz bottle bought in NYC into a Brooklyn Brewery Snifter

A - Pours dark with a tan head. Not much lacing and head died down fairly quck

S - Smell inside bottle was of grapes and dark fruit. Almost like a grape juice

M - CARBONATION! like a soda. It bordered on unpleasant for beer. The carbonation dies down as the beer warms.

T - Sweet. Its like a caramel sugar cube with hints of dark fruits. Malty. Putting aside the carbonation, it actually finishes nice. Its like belgian beer candy.

O - It was an interesting beer to try but probably won't be trying it again. Someone who likes this style of beer and likes a lot of carbonation will like this a lot. Not for me

33cl into a tulip. Pours an opaque walnut, dense towering cola colored head recedes leaving dangling clumpy froth.

Strong vinous qualities dominates the scent along with spices including ginger, clove and that elusive spice grape bubblegum. wonderful

Flavor surprises with an initial roastyness which turns to a mild bittersweet chocolate aftertaste. Significant dark fruits and hazelnut with the spices joining in. Thin bodied lively mouthfeel.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a dark, hazy orange brown. Gentle pour produces a massive, long lasting cream colored head. Aroma of caramel and dark and light fruits. Complex flavor of dark fruit, caramel malt. Pleasant sweet but dry finish with intense fruit flavor. Medium bodied. Very nicely made and fun to drink. Will search this out again.

33 cl bottel poured into my lost abbey stemware glass

Pours a hazy dark amber color with a huge foamy off-white head that lasts for ages and leaves lots of lacing.
Aroma of bread, licorice, dark sugary malts and some spices. Flavor is very nice sugary sweet with spicy bitter in a delicate balance. Some more licorice and spices in the finish.
Lively carbonation ( for me a little bit to much ) and a creamy texture.
Great brew.

Appearance: A massive head is generated by the pour with the liquid underneath showing a chestnut color; plenty of Belgian lace, too

Smell: Spice cake aromatics, with brown sugar, dried fruit and vanilla

Taste: Opens with brown sugar cake and dried fruit elements, with a tilt toward increasing fruitiness by mid-palate; the flavors fade a bit, after the swallow, though the elements do linger in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with high, but creamy, carbonation

Overall: Not at the top of the class, but a very decent example of the style

A - Cola brown, huge head that stays for some time, getting very clumpy as it dissipates. Lots of clinging lace.

S - Brown sugar, dark fruits.

T - Taste exactly like it smells. Big time candy, brown sugar, dark fruits nestled in.

M - Thick, over carbonated for my tastes, ends on a sweet note, maybe too sweet. Not much balance.

D - Overall, pretty tasty. I would have it again.

It poured with a huge, thick foamy head, it looked like a root beer float.

The smell was subtle for a dark ale, but pleasant.

It was very tasty, with dark chocolate, burnt aftertaste that lingered on the palate.

The mouthfeel was the only thing that detracted from the beer in my opinion, as I found it to be a little to watery for my personal preference.

All in all, a tasty dark ale that I would buy again.

This beer poured a very huge foamy light tan head that refused to leave and when it did acted like one of those root beer floats leaving latticed lace in it's wake. The cloudy dark brown color does not let me see the carbonation but based on the head, no doubt there. The aroma was of malt, caramel, spices, anise and a hint of chocolate. The flavor was of malt. caramel, pepper and anise. The body was medium light and the finish slightly sweet.

Appearance: Reddish brown caramelized malts form a leather body with decent 1/4 inch foamy head.

Smell: The smell is balmy. Distinctively belgian. Nutty. I smell bready malts and hints of fruit. Slight citrus and spicy hops along with an aroma of raisin.

Taste: The alcohol is right in front with this ale. I taste something akin to scotchmallow or taffy. There is a candied quality to this ale. There are hints of tobacco in the body. The spicy hops give off big clove and nutmeg flavors along with citrus.

Mouthfeel: This is a beer that leans to the malty alcoholic side but still has great hop complexity and good balance. I like the chewy texture as well as the tingle of the hops.

Overall: I would by this beer again because of the good flavor, quality and price

Stubby bottle picked up from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA

A: The color of the beer as it poured was lighter than I expected for whatever reason... almost a deep honey-brown. In the glass, it has a hue of layered caramel. Head is sandy, and lively! Formed an easy 2.5 fingers of head that made itself comfortable.

S + T: Sweet malts, Belgian sugars, along with a touch of almost citrus-like fruit on the nose (or at least, it's the closest thing I identify it as). That doesn't come out as much in the flavour, giving way to dark fruit flavors... plum, somewhat tart.

M + D: A little heavier, sparkling something like a dubbel would, with the dry finish that I would associate with a dubbel, as well. Alcohol is modest, but present, and adds a touch of slightly numbing warmth on the finish. Nice, though a tad sweet.

Poured from 11.2oz stubby brown bottle into a Duvel tulip. No freshness date. Single purchased at Wine Warehouse (Charlottesville, VA) for $4.99.

A: Murky chestnut brown with soft 1-2 finger beige, big-bubbled head with good retention and leaves a soft, constant layer and several thick lines of craggy lace.

S: Exceedingly malty, dark fruit aroma with a lot of raisin and brown sugar and some spice, but less phenol than a dubbel. Not a lot of hops in this one.

T: Sweeter than I would usually peg for this style, but enjoyable with a lot of dark fruit fig and raisin flavors, candi sugar, and some light phenol notes. Hops have more presence than in the nose and provide a little herbal, earthiness. The finish is moderately dry, and the alcohol component is warming and a little peppery.

M: The carbonation is a little too lively but doesn't detract much from the overall package. The body is pretty much full.

O: I enjoyed this brew, but it is sweet for the style and would be a good dessert beer for its solid dark fruit and candi sugar flavors. Glad I tried it.

First had: on tap at Monk's, Philly, PA

Poured into a tulip glass, a moderately hazy tea brown color with a small but attractive head of delicate tan bubbles. A fan blowing in my general direction made it difficult to get much aroma from this, despite me sticking my nose into the glass to the point of appearing silly. Still, I received some light yeasty, bready notes, and maybe a bit of spice; not much else. Taste was nutty, malty, and sugary up front, very bold, with a generous blast of esters following and a sense of dark dried plums and figs, with a touch of spice. Medium mouthfeel, with a dry finish, and quite drinkable.

Brown 33cl dumpy bottle, best before 23 Apr 2012, been in my stash for some time: opened and reviewed Sunday 22 May 2011.

Poured into a Hoegaarden Grand Cru glass: the sediment seemed to stay in the bottle, so my glass was full of a dark reddy brown beer which had a very slight haziness to it. On top a well formed and deep off-white head of tight bubbles.

Malty molasses fill the nose, treacle and toffee notes complete the smells I found.

Roasted/toasted malty bread taste, with an alcohol undertone. Sweet and tangy, but lacking something when comparing with the better beers within this style.

I thought the beer a bit lively and over carbonated, the alcohol was too prominent also, the body not possessing enough strength or complexity to control it.

My wife liked this beer more than I did, the malty sweetness winning her over, compared to my more measured overview which pushed it towards more average scores for the style.

330ml bottle poured into a Goliath goblet.

A- A very live beer it was. Pours a dark amber/brown with a thick, fluffy off white head that sticks around for a bit. You know its a good beer when the head raises above the glass and doesn't spill over, but rather stands on its own.

S- Caramel and brown sugar aroma with a touch of floral hops.

T- A complex combination of yeast, bread, malts, caramel and bitterness with a touch of alcohol at the end. The bitterness lingers for quite a bit.

M- Thin without much carbonation, even a little watery. A little numbing stickiness is left on the lips.

O- A pretty good beer. Seems to be a relatively rare find, I'm happy I got the opportunity to try it.

This dark ale pours out as a deep brown color with some fairly nice red highlights. The head was rather fluffy and stuck around for a good while. The smell was a bit on the yeasty and roasted side. Some spice and banana were present too. The taste was pretty spicy upfront that settled into a nice smooth roasted aftertaste. The beer had some decent dark fruit notes as well in the flavor. The mouth feel was on the smooth side and wen down easy. A good brew to try.

A: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a brownish color with ruby tints and a cloudy texture. There was a massive, fluffy, creamy, off white, long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: There was a good aroma of yeast, dark fruits, malt and spices.

T: Tasted of Belgian yeast, plums, some malt pepper, and some other spices. A complex, but not overpowering flavor that's easy going down.

M: A well carbonated beer with a dry finish. Medium-bodied.

D: This is definitely one of the most well crafted BSDAs I've had in a while. drinkable.
