Steinlager had been out of the market in Central Texas for a while, but it has made a comeback of sorts, as it once again seems to have a distributor. It's an import from New Zealand, and it comes in a sleek bottle with a haughty looking label. I had tried this beer years ago and was unimpressed, but I thought that I'd give it another go, hoping that time passed would give me a different impression of the brew. Well, not so much.
The pour was ok, straw body, lots of carbonation, reasonable head retention. The nose was sharp and bitter.
The taste was much like I remembered, skunky and unnecessarily harsh. This is a VERY skunky-tasting beer, but I get the impression that it's just a basic part of it's overall flavor profile. There's a bit of a crackery undertone, but it just gets overwhelmed by the sharpness. Not very good at all.
Average mouthfeel, not at all drinkable. I'm glad that I just sprang for the single instead of the sixer. This beer really wants to be a Euro-style lager, but it gets the whole thing wrong. It's got the look, but not the substance.

Had this a few times in Canada but decided to pick up a 750mL since it was cheap. From notes.
A - Poured very light golden straw with good carbonation, a two finger white head that was gone fast, and bright. Weak lace was left with a film of retention.
S - Grain, corn, sugar.
T - Sugar, grain, plain and inoffensive, yet not overly tasty.
M - Good carbonation, light to medium body, sweet then slightly dry in the finish.
O/D - Pretty clean and strandard for a macro lager. Lacks the corny grossness that alot carry with them. Cheap and inoffensive.

A small white head quickly dies leaving barely a lacing at all above a clear golden colored beer.
This beer has a big sour lemony citrus aroma.
Sour citrus taste mostly lemons with a touch of graininess.
A very light aftertaste with some lemony tones.
This beer seems to remind me of a lesser quality Budweiser.

Steinlager Classic has a thin, white head and a clear, bubbly, golden appearance. Lacing is almost nonexistent. The aroma has an initial skunk whiff upon pouring the beer, but this goes right away. What one encounters is a sweet, lightly-toasted barley malt, a nice hop bitterness, and some cracker. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Steinlager finishes crisp and refreshing. Drinkability is astronomical. Overall, this is quite nice.
