12 oz can from Brewers Haven, poured into thistle. Dark brown, light peeking through, small, thin head fades to beige ring, no lacing. Aroma is peat, earthy, slightly ashy, but light. Taste is sweet, peat, smoky flavors, but weak. Thin feel too. So i can believe the low scores....rewind...temperature has everything to do here, got much better as it warmed

I am trying this beer as a guest tapper at Milner's Gate in Twin Falls, Idaho as part of a five sample flight. It poured a clear brownish amber with off white head which left a spotty lace. The beer was nicely balanced and easy to drink. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.

this has just launched in idaho and seems like a nice addition to the local scene as a brand family. this one is tasty too, malt driven but clean as a whistle and not too sweet, a pint kind of beer, even multiple pints, which i think is a rarity for this sort of thing, at least for me anyway. its deeper in color, even pushing brown, and gorgeously frothy from the tap, the white head is thick and lasting and hangs above the rim, glory. it smells and tastes the same, burnt sugar, a trace of smoke, hickory wood, and unlit cigar. its good in the taste too, clean for the style, not thick and teeth coating and gross, with a little bready yeast and a thing or two from the water profile making itself known. i also like the richness of the grain without the weight, the flavor without the sugar, nutty and earthy not diabetic, slightly herbal too as it warms, more dynamic than most. bold enough to stand up to smoked meat, but also supportive of greens and vinegar and hot peppers and those sorts of foods, impressively refined and versatile. not my favorite style by a mile, but objectively one of the best beers these guys have sent to boise so far...
edit: just a little less compelling from the can, especially visually, not anywhere near as much head or froth or lace, and it seems a little tired and sweet on the palate, but still a fine example of the style and one of their more popular beers for a reason. draft preferred for me.

7/26/20....pours deep caramel dark brown. No foam. Sweet nutty caramel nose, slightly earthy. Sticky sweet open. Light carbonation. Cloys bit but enough to bite to distract. Teeters but hangs together.

L - Dark amber. Short off-white, head - not persistent. Appears fairly clear.
S - Medium roasted malts. Bread or toast, brown sugar, caramel.
T - Sweet bready malt - almost sugary. Bread and sugar, a little cola, a hint of burnt toast.
F - Medium.
O - Per style this is malty, but this take falls on the cloying side.

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a mahogany brown color with a one finger head of off white foam. The head fades slowly over time to leave a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is sweet of caramel and brown sugar with some other malty and bready aromas mixed within. Along with these smells comes a little bit of dark fruit of cherry and plum as well as a hint of nut and smoke.
Taste – The taste begins with a roasty bready taste with a good showing of caramel and toffee. As the taste advances these flavors all remain strong and are joined by some light smoke and cocoa as well as some dark fruit. At the end, a bit of nut and earthy hop joins the tongue to leave one with a moderately sweet and roasted flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is somewhat more chewy with a carbonation level that is average. Overall the feel was pretty good for the moderate roasty and sweet flavors of the brew.
Overall – A decent Scottish ale with a moderate roasty and rather sweet but quite drinkable flavor. Nothing spectacular, but well worth a try.
