Drunk fresh at the source in September 2023.

L: Crystal clear, dark brown. Thin, off-white head. No carbonation. It looks like beef stock!

S: Rich, smokey ham.

T: The smoked ham flavour is more refined here, leaning more towards a rich toffee note. The smoke is still there, but it in no way defines this beer. The finish is sweet and quite long.

M: Mouthfeel is full, and carbonation is minimal.

O: Another very approachable Rauchbier from this brewery.

Cheers!

At the brewery in Bamberg! Wow, even smokier and maltier than their Lager. Also much darker. A beautiful amber brown. Flavor and feel are off the charts. How can they make such incredible beers? Absolutely outstanding Märzen.

Bought a 0,5L bottle to-go at the brewery dated 24.08.23. An outstanding example of the style, rich and sweet. Has an autumn twist to the traditional Rauchbier style. Approaching Doppelbock territory. Sweet, roasted, smoked malt dance on the palate and get washed away by proper carbonation and even a hit of hops.

Pours a clear, deep dark amber, almost mahagony coloration with a medium, frothy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt with a mild smoky note. Taste follows the nose, being dominated by sweet, bready, caramel and slightly grainy malt with a pretty mild smokiness and light herbal note. Finishes with a light bitterness, some sweetness and some grains and very little smoke lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a light/medium body and medium carbonation.

Found this slightly disappointing compared to Schlenkerla Märzen. Much milder smokiness, slighty lighter body and less balanced, lacking some hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness. Whereas Schlenkerla tastes of campfire smoked bacon, this is more reminiscent of honey barbecue. This also has a notably lighter body and mouthfeel to it, which, combined with the lighter smokiness, makes it a bit more easy-drinking by comparison.

Bottle purchased in Bamberg. Pours clear, dark copper in color with one third inch head. Taste is big smoked wood and toasted malt. Medium bodied, low carbonation, sweet and smoky. Delicious. I prefer Heller Trum, but wow. Should have bought more of this. Will look for this again.

Brauerei Spezial "Spezial Rauchbier Märzen"
2,90€/0,5l on tap at the brewery on 13 September 2017

Notes: Clear deep-copper/mahogany brown body with glowing orange highlights beneath a creamy head of off-white. Very good head retention, OK lacing. There's a light smokiness in the aroma along with a mild maltiness. In the flavor that maltiness reveals some medium-dark caramel character (they actually kiln and smoke their own malt in-house, all of which is locally sourced and organic). There's also a hint of apple, and some leafy hop flavor. It displays sweet malt upfront, and then a firm bitterness that leads to a dry finish. It lingers with some residual caramel and lightly leafy and herbal hops. Medium bodied and gently crisp. There's less smoke here than say anything from Schlenkerla, but it's still clear and adds depth and charm. Certainly one of the top rauchbiers in the world. A classic.

Clear brown color, just slightly reddish, beige head. Aroma has nice smoked malts, slight toasted malt acidity, grains and just a hint of ham. Taste has also smoked grains, not too intense but really tasty. Slightly sweet and malty on the finish but it fits really well. Light to medium body with soft carbonation. Really tasty and easy drinking rauchbier.

This rauchbier pours an amber brown color with a thick foamy tan head. The smell is fairly mild, especially for a rauchbier, but it’s really great. It is a mix of smoked sausage and biscuity malts. The flavor is no less excellent. It of course has a nice smoky flavor, in this case sort of a smoked sausage quality, as well as a nice biscuit flavor from the malts, some grainy earth qualities, and finishes with a fairly dry, piney hop character that is more pronounced than the average rauchbier. This hop character makes a sort of smoked wood impression that lingers on the tongue. The body is medium, but slightly on the heavy end of that. When talking about rauchbiers you of course have to talk about the smokiness, which is the whole point of them. In my experience the German rauchbiers have been more smoky then their American counterparts. This beer falls somewhere between the average of the two. It has a pronounced smokiness, but is more sedate than most if not all of the Schlenkerla rauchbiers. Although I did find the Schlenkerla marzen to be the most mild of their beers, so maybe there’s just something about a marzen that cuts the smokiness a little bit. Anyway, it’s a really well balanced rauchbier and I think it’s great.
