Growler poured into a tulip

A: Pours black with a tan colored head that lasts a very short while.

S: Smells predominantly of coffee with some chemical acidity and a slight nutty quality.

T/M: Flavor is relatively thin with some English ale bitterness, notes of coffee, medium carbonation and a nutty finish.

It's a pretty decent porter but average overall.

Poured from growler into pint glass. Deep brown with ruby highlights when held up to light. Small tan-ish head that faded quickly to a thin layer, and was pretty much gone by halfway down the glass. Little lacing.

Smells sweet right up front, with toffee and a maple syrup-like aroma being prominent.

Tastes sweet and syrupy with just enough bitterness at the end to balance it out along with a hint of spiciness (maybe that's from the rye?). If it has much rye in it, its well hidden by the sweeter malts.

Mouthfeel is a little thin. This makes for a good session beer because it tastes great. I will probably be a regular in the beer store getting growlers of this. Also want to mention that I made a great barbecue sauce with this beer. Was actually looking for Sue but they didn't have it, so I settled for this. Was a good choice IMO.

Picked up a Grower of this at the tap room after trying the sampler and choosing it as my favorite (no Hop Project or Sue available).
Pours a dark brown with a creamy light tan, almost off white head.
I can smell some dark chocolate and roasted malts. Also smell somethinig else that might be the rye.
Lots of chocolate flavor with the roasted malt bitterness and a pretty pronounced but not over powering rye flavor.
The mouthfeel is creamy and smooth making for great drinkability.
I think this is one of the better beers producted by Yazoo

Got my growler refilled over the weekend at the brewery and decided to go with the rye porter.

Pours a burgundy-brown color with a 1.5 finger head.

Smell is some chocolate and a whiff of spiciness from the rye. Taste is a little chocolate with a nice roasted malt backbone. There is a nice bit of coffee on the finish.

This one toes the line between porter and stout. The mouthfeel is medium, and drinkability is great. I have to be honest that I didn't go in to this one with much expectation after reading some of the reviews, but I really did enjoy it.

Poured into a Stella Artois glass

A: Dark brown with a tan one finger head that dissipates to foam. Great lacing.

S: Chocolate, cocoa, toasty.

T: Charred chocolate with light coffee notes. Malty. Sweet, Hearty. Rye slides in on the finish.

M: Medium with medium to heavy carbonation. Frothy. Dry.

O: A solid porter. Great with a chocolate chip cookie. Nice dessert beer.

Brewed on- 12/14/12

A - The porter pours out with clarity of fresh coffee...and about the same carbonation. The head never fully forms, instead islands of foam coalesce and then dissipate leaving nothing. The color is right on though.

S - The rich and roasty Maris Otter malts come wooshing up in the aroma hitting all the right notes: cocoa, leather, herbal. Even the belches smell good. Slight alcohol.

T - Creamy chocolate rounds out most of the taste profile, but there are other faint tastes of peaty-ness. Also a very mild hop presence, with a long mouth watering finish of roasty maltiness.

M - Thin and reminiscent of coca-cola. Lively carbonation with light body and a touch of smoothness.

I think that Yazoo does a great job of making solid beers that most people would approve of. But I think that drinkability is too important for them in most of their core beers. I would love to see them just crank it to 11 and see what happens...I know they want to.

appearance: dark brown/black, 1 finger off white head

smell: chocolate, caramel, malt, bread

taste: chocolate, lots of bready notes, coffee aftertaste, very well balanced, somewhat watery taste.

mouthfeel: really smooth, sits well on the palate

overall: great balanced porter, but wish it had a higher ABV and it would be a truly outstanding beer, just a little too watered down for my liking. You can thank tennessee beer laws for that one. I'd rather have YAZOO's SUE anyday, even though that's not a porter.

Poured into a nonic pint glass on 4/11/13

Dark tobacco juice brown with a short, 1/3rd inch head. The foam fizzles away quickly (not as fast as, say, Dr. Pepper). Come to think of it, it looks like cola. Not a speck of lace.

Tangy roast aroma with rye and cocoa. Nutty overtones. Hints of some subtle dark fruit; plum perhaps? Though it smells sharp, the taste is smoother. Dark roast, modest rye and bitter chocolate. Earthy finish. When coupled with the body the beer seems thin. Carbonation is reasonable by comparison.

Not too bad. I like it better as it warms up. Pretty dismal appearance though.

A-Pours very dark, almost black with a thin tan head that dissipates immediately.

S-Some chocolate, roasted malt, and hint of dark fruits

T-Dark fruits along with a hint of chocolate and coffee, and a touch of roasted malt

M-Syrupy and somewhat thin

D-One could drink this all day long, no problem. A true session beer.

Overall, this beer was great. It was unlike any other porter I've had before because it seemed much more dark fruit forward than roasted. It was semi-sweet, but no where near too sweet. I'm glad I tried this while in Nashville.

A very dark brown in color with a creamy tan head. Aromas of light cocoa. Taste begins with a bit of coffee, and some chocolate. Next was some sweet grain, and a hint of hops in the finish. Mouthfeel is good. Overall a quite good porter! The spiciness of he rye works well here.

A buddy brought a variety pack back from a trip to Nashville. The beer pours a nice color which was slightly less dark than Guinness, with a tan head. The rye was indeed sly - the beer wasn't as astringent as I had anticipated. While not as bitter as I would expect from a porter, I found it quite drinkable, and wouldn't hesitate to purchase it if I found it in my part of the country.

From a bottle that was bottled Mar 7 2012 and tasted Nov 2 2012

Pitch black with minimal lacing.
Heavy smell of carmel sweetness.
Taste is more like an ESB than a Porter. It is lacking a dry black malt character.

Reminds me of a Guiness Extra Stout. No real flaws but not what I look for in a Porter.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Minimal head that quickly dissipates. When it does, it appears exactly like a flat diet Coke would.

Smells of peppery chocolate with a slight whiff of biscuit. Nose is fairly light.

Medium viscosity with a slight bit of over carbonation prevailing.

To be honest, I expected a little more out of the taste. Has a burnt roast feel to it with a somewhat flat finish, even for a Porter. The rye does shine through which is it's one lone saving grace.

A medium sized light brown head that settles into a decent lacing above a clear dark reddish amber colored beer.

Dark roasted caramel to chocolate malt aroma with a bit of dark fruits sneaking in there.

The taste is very similar to the aroma deep dark roasted caramel to chocolates with a bit of those dark fruits sneaking in there.

A roasted dry aftertaste with a bit of the dark malts hanging around on this medium bodied porter.

A pretty good tasting beer, I could use a few of these on a chilly autumn night.

Poured this beer into a pint glass. It's a chocolate brown with a very thin head that disappeared quickly. There was a little bit of lacing on the glass.

The beer smelled like a porter should, a little coppery but mostly chocolate and toffee.

A very clean malt taste. Not too sweet. The hop balance was pretty even.

Somewhat light in the mouthfeel for a porter but easy to drink.

Overall, I liked it as a session beer. Was somewhat let down because the Yazoo Sue is an incredibly rich smoked porter, very bold with lots of body and flavor. I was hoping this would be similar but it was toned down. Still, I liked it, there aren't too many porters widely available in the middle of Tennessee, will drink it again.

Bottled in March of this year.

Pours a dark brown body with a small light tan head that has low retention. Lacing is on the sparse side.

Aroma is like (black) peppery chocolate. Somewhat simple but enjoable.

Flavor is good - chocolate comes through with a mild rye complexity on the backbone. Finish is too short and somewhat...empty.

Mouthfeel is decent for a porter, carbonation might be a little high.

Overall I enjoy the Sly Rye Porter and would not hesitate to pick it up again, but it isn't incredible. I've had a couple other Rye porters that I prefer, but they are almost impossible for me to get.

Bottle: Poured a dark black color porter with a dark foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of spicy rye notes with light roasted malt and some black chocolate notes. Taste is also dominated by spicy rye notes with some dry roasted m alt notes with light black chocolate notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Well brewed with rye contributing some interesting complexity.

Had on tap at the Yazoo brewery. Pitch black in color with a foamy, creamy head to it.

The aroma shows some chocolate mixing with a little roasty coffee. Some sweeter, creaminess and a little bready, spicy rye are noticeable as well. It comes together pretty well.

The taste has some cocoa flavors coming out up front with roasted malts and a little rye to it in the finish. Nice range of flavors to it and pretty smooth overall.

The mouthfeel is creamy and slick with moderate carbonation. Great mouthfeel for the style. Overall it was a very flavorful and drinkable beer. I really liked the little bit of rye flavor in it. Very solid beer all around, especially for the style.

Had on tap in a pint glass at Village Pub in Nashville.

Beer pours a nice dark black color with a fingers worth of white head. Laces pretty well.

Beer smells of very roasty and of chocolate and coffee.

Beer tastes very roasty on the front end. Very rich chocolate, followed by some vanilla sweetness. You can taste the rye mid-way thorugh to the finish, giving it a very unique taste for a porter.

Moutfeel is a bit on the thin side and very drinkable.

Very drinkable and flavorful.

A – Dark cherry brown with cranberry highlights. Nice bone white head has nice retention and ok lace.

S – Sweet oats, cream, buckeweat honey and light roasted coffee.

T – Peppery rye up front with a soft, sweet caramel. Coffee roast and condensed milk melt into a sweet, cream soda finish.

M – Medium body with a soft creaminess.

O – Very sweet, but the profile manages to handle it. The rye is a really nice touch.

12oz bottle poured into a New Belgium globe.

A- Black with a frothy white, 1-finger head; no light penetration.

S- Rye, chocolate, and a light coffee aroma.

T- Very little hop presence, rye is present throughout. Hints of chocolate and coffee are there until the end.

M- Medium to thick with a foamy carbonation.

O- I have had rye IPAs and rye stouts, but this was the first rye porter I have tasted. This sets a pretty good standard, IMO. I hope I can score some more in the future.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a 1/2 inch fizzy khaki head that fades to nothing. Small streaks and dots of lace drip back down into the remaining beer leaving no lacing. Smell is of roasted malt, roasted nuts, and rye aromas. Taste is of roasted malt and roasted nuts, rye, and some slight coffee flavors. A mild roasty aftertaste lingers on the tongue with each sip. This beer has a higher level of carbonation for a porter with a crisp and bubbly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good porter with some nice roasty and rye aromas and flavors.

Porter pours an opaque black with a small head that dissipates quickly. Wow is this dark. Very nice aroma of cocoa, licorice and spicy rye. Flavor is light chocolatey goodness with a small amount of roasted malt. Mouthfeel is quite thin but this makes it drinkable. Overall effect is that I would have this again but it is not on my shopping list anytime soon. Maybe it's not my favorite style but I encourage porter lovers to give it a shot.
