Hefeweizen |  5.00% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (75), on-tap (26), growler (4), can (1)

Notes:
An authentic example of a Bavarian Hefeweizen. “Hefe” means cloudy or yeasty and “weizen” means wheat. This beer is made with mostly wheat and uses a true Hefeweizen yeast that gives it a fruity, banana aroma with just a hint of cloves. The tart finish makes this the perfect summer beer.

Thanks to ckeegan04 for this one. My bottle was poured into a Wiezen glass it looked real nice three fingers worth of white head that goes to a thick lace. The body was a hazy yellow in color interrupted by a bubble or two coming from the bottom of the glass

Aromas of citrus' bubblegum and wheat with a slight sourness as well filled my nose

Flavors of citrus and spices and there is that sourness again it kind of works with this brew .This brew is light and crisp in the mouth.

Good drinkability as well although I haven't had too many I wouldn't drink again. You could kickback a few of these real easy like. A good try at a Hefe not my favorite but not the worst either

Hazy yellow/orange in color, pale, with a white finger plus of head. No lacing.

Smell is nice, with some citrus, graininess, slight malt sweetness and some banana.

Much of the same. Bit more on the banana though.

The feel is a little silky, smooth, light in body. Decent carbonation.

Pretty good drinkability. Multiples would be good.

12 oz into nonic

A: Super cloudy, 1.5 inch of fluffy white foam, yellow/orange hue with very present carbonation

S: big time banana, clove, fresh bready yeast aroma

T: banana bread, wow a lot of banana, slight bubblegum, strong yeast, clove in the finish, a bit of a sour quality

M: Very bright and there is a strong bite about 1/2 way through the sip, feels a bit thin at the end

O: very nice, especially if you like the banana thing. I wish the mouthfeel had a bit more substance across the full sip

The beer pours like the typical hefeeweizen. Cloudy, hazy and grainy with a thin white head and spotty lace. The smell is faint and grainy with a back draft of banana, cloves and pepper. The taste is a bit thin and watery up front, but perfectly balanced between the banana and cloves. hints of black pepper and a tart hop bite in the background. A bit thin and watery, but a creamy swallow. Simple, refreshing, and easy to drink.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass... hazy golden yellow color with a thing fizzy white head. The head barely lasted a minute before dissipating.

The aroma is nice, malty, a little citrus flavor... very impressed after the less than impressive appearance.

The citrus flavor dominates the taste up front... a little sour lemon on the tongue at the end of each sip. It's not bad, but not as balanced as it could be.

The mouthfeel is average... nothing special but this is definitely a drinkable beer. Light and refreshing and could make for a decent summer session beer.

Poured from 12oz bottle. Thanks to Supernova777 for the pour. Josh you shouldn't have!

A- Pours a hazy yellowish orange color. One finger white head shows low retention and leaves very light streaks of lacing on the sides of the glass.

S- Good typical hefe aromas come to the nose. Clove, banana, and a light yeasty scent hit first. There is a light wheat undertone to this nose. Some light citrus notes along with a light alcohol whiff in the ending bring out the aroma.

T- The inital flavor was citrus forward which tended to die down the more I drank of this. Wheat notes were big and maybe some of the boldest parts of the flavor. Banana and clove came through from the middle on toward the ending. The alcohol made itself apparent toward the ending of the beer but was light about it. Average tasting with a little extra something about it.

M- Light mouthfeel. Carbonation was good for the style. Light citrus and banana flavors along with wheat left on the palate. Aftertaste was more wheaty along with a touch of light alcohol and banana clove combo. Alcohol had a light drying on the palate. Flavor was a little off but I couldn't put my finger on it how...I don't know if it was just a little too watery for my liking with this style.

D- I thought this beer was a good offering. Not the most mind blowing Hefeweizen I have had but a good one. This is my first beer from Yazoo and I like what I think they could do. The ABV was light and hidden well. The flavor was a little lacking at times but the drinkability kind of made up for it.

A - Three fingers of white foam with ok retention. Hazy golden color with a yeast cloud slowly spreading through the glass.

S - Bready, yeasty smell. Spice, some clove but not much fruit.

T - Lots of wheat flavor. Yeast, phenolic clove, and muted banana. Just a touch of earthy hops lingering in the back.

M - Somewhat thin body with high carbonation.

D - There is a lot of potential in this beer, but it is not quite there yet. The yeast flavors are a little too subtle for me and kind of muddy. The bottle I had was just less than three months old, so it should have been ok; but weisse beers are temperamental and it could have been past its prime.

Pours a clear, pale yellow color. 1/5 inch head of a white color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of yeast, sweet malt, citrus (lemon), and slight spice (clove), and hint of wheat. Fits the style of a Hefweizen. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp with an average carbonation level. Tastes of wheat, yeast, slight hops, spice (clove), and sweet malt. Overall, a rather above average Hefeweizen, nice body, blend, and flavor.

I am ashamed to say that, despite having gone to school in Tennessee for the past four years, this is the first Tennesee brew I think I've ever had.

Pours a cloudy light golden yellow... about par for the course. Nose is full of husky wheat, tartness, and significantly less (though definitely present) banana and clove than one might expect. Palate is full of clean tartness, yeast, banana, some tart fruit (apple?). Perhaps a bit dryer than the typical hefe. A bit of astringency in the finish. Drinkabilitty is high... would be an excellent beer to session on a warm day.

Although a bit off the beaten path, this is a solid hefe. Will be buying again.

Drinking Date: 12/14/10
Bottled-On Date: Late October 2010

Appearance: Very cloudy and light yellow with an orange tint. Looks like freshly squeezed orange juice. The head is white and bubbly. It dissipates very quickly and leaves no lacing. There was very little foam left by the time I took my first sip.

Smell: Full-on fruity and banana aroma. A pleasure to whiff. A hint of alcohol was also present.

Taste: The taste followed the smell... very banana-like. Not a complex taste, but what was there was pretty good. The first sip was the best, becaues the fruity sweetness was right up front (then my mouth got used to it). Carbonation was at a good level.

Mouthfeel: Went down smoothly; too smoothly for my taste. Not enough body to the beer. It drank like a light American lager. ALthough, this does contribute to its drinkability.

Drinkability: Due to the beers light body and easiness on the palate, I could see drinking a few few of these easily.

Notes: Overall a decent beer. I would drink it again if I saw it on tap. Worth a try and/or for a change of pace.

12oz brown bottle with a "bottled on" date.

Vigorous pouring produces a tall order of white head, a stiff swirl of the bottle to get some yeast in as well makes the brew hazy straw in appearance. Soft banana bread and a twang of clove in the nose, yeasty. A bit smooth, a bit slick and a bit crisp in the lighter body. Bready palate, banana taffy, faint clove, nutty yeast and some other vague fruity esters in the back. Semi-dry finish.

Pretty spot on for the style, good drinking ... I'd perfer more smoothness here but now I am splitting hairs.

I had this on-tap at a killer bar in downtown Nashville.

A: Poured a wheaty, cloudy mustard yellow color, with a 1/2 finger retentative head. Look like a standard unfiltered Hefe.

S: I got some clove and banana, but this was somewhat muted overall, compared to many Hefeweizens on the market.

T: Crisp and highly drinkable, perfect for a hot summer day, with bubble gum notes. Once again though, not too powerful.

M: Yeasty and cushiony in terms of carbonation levels, with no booze to speak of, and a good amount of lacing.

O: This was a standard entry into the Hefe lexicon, but sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered!

pils glass requested, into german mug as it'll have to do.

Nice bright golden color, big foamy head that is 3-fingers plus. Very creamy, slightly off white. Takes a while to settle down.

One whiff and I get a lot of honey/floral sweetness and some strong yeast notes.

Taste confirms. Mild banana and the yeast backs off a bit. Very mellow but enjoyable. Mildly grassy, some twinge of tart apple too. Pleasing finish.

A bit light for the style but pretty refreshing. I enjoyed this one.

Got this one from ckeegan04 in the Secret Santa '08!

Pours a cloudy lemony/yellow color, minimal white head fades quickly into a foamy collar around the glass, no lacing to speak of, but a nice display of bubbles rising to the top. Lots of clove on the nose, some banana, slight lemon aroma as well. Taste follows right along, with a faint peppery hit. Mouthfeel is a little thin, zippy little bubbles, and ultimately pretty refreshing. Certainly very drinkable, but more suited to the summer months.

Though its appearance was not very impressive -- given my affection for the Hefeweizen bench mark, Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier -- this Yazoo offering makes up for its shortcomings in smell, taste and mouthful. This has all the characteristics of a good Hefe, with a definite yeast, banana, clove smell and taste. This might be my favorite Yazoo offering, next to its Hop Project IPAs. A definite keeper in my mini fridge. Nice job, Yazoo.

Thanks to travita for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a very murky light yellow color with a white head. The aroma is basic hefeweizen with bananas and cloves. The flavor is similar but the bananas and wheat are much stronger than the cloves. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Had on tap at Jim'Nick's BBQ in Murfreesboro,TN.Came in a standard pint glass a dull hazed medium golden with a thinner white head atop, knowing it wasn't in the proper glassware kept the score from going lower on the appearance.clove and banana aromas stood out most and they were pretty assertive, light toasted wheat underneath.alighter feel in the mouth but it made the beer go down even easier than many of the style.Banana and yeasy phenol flavors with a refreshing little lemony twang in the finish wich gave it a little complexity. Not a bad beer, not a style i go to very often but Iam sure it beats the TN heat in the summer.

I had this one on tap at the Flying Saucer in Nashville last week. From my notes:

A= This hefeweizen poured a pale gold color with a moderate amount of cloudiness for the style. The 1/2" white head disappeared fairly quickly, and did not leave any lace (nor was any expected really).

S= Fruity and yeasty aroma, full of banana and clove as well as the expected wheat "twang". Exactly what you would expect from the style.

T= The flavor profile was good but not as good as the aroma. A bit muted, but still showing soft flavors of banana, clove, citrus, and of course wheat malt sweetness. Mildly tart finish.

MF= Medium bodied with a soft (in my opinion just a bit too soft) carbonation feel.

D= Not the best and not the worst by far. Solid middle of the road, no complications hefeweizen here.

12oz Bottle poured into a SurlyFest Stien.

Appearance: Pours a pale straw color. White puffy head which lingers, but not a lot of lace.

Aroma: Lots of banana, maybe a little malt. Actually it reminds me a lot of banana bread.

Taste: Sweet, the banana smell doesn't turn into a lot of banana taste. Bit of lemon, and then the traditional wheat base.

Mouthfeel: Thin, bit of fizz. But in line with the style.

Overall: Not bad. Very in line with the style, but nothing super special.

Served on tap in a pint glass. Hazy yellow body with a small head that faded quickly. Little lacing.

Decent aroma but light here as well. A little citrus and bready wheat. A hint of banana and spices in the background.

Solid hefeweisen flavor. Spicy yeast followed by banana and clove. Some light bubble gum in the background. More impressed with the flavor than I thought I would be.

Overall a nice representation of the style. Good for Yazoo.

As I was back in Nashville I picked up a bottle of this one, as I wanted to try the Hef brewed by Yazoo, the very popular brewery from here. I was generally impressed.

I would say I poured this 12oz bottle into a pint glass, but that would be a lie. Because as I opened it, I lost about 2 ounces due to a slippery table. Fail. Oh well, on with the review.

Cloudy appearance, more of a copper color than lemon color but still not far from what is to be expected. Taste was more than I expected. A lot smoother than I have come to find with a lot of hefs. The wheat and spices come out a lot in the glass. Very drinkable and for those in Tennessee or the South as a whole, this should be an easy to find winner of a hef.

Still technically winter but a nice hot day makes me dream of summer, so why not a nice hefe. Thanks to pitasoup (reddit) for this one. And screw this lame-o screw cap.

Pours a light fizzy head that gets to almost 1 finger on my upside down pour bit the head fades almost instantly to a light covering like it was a fake head, hazy but I can see the column of sediment swirling in the middle of the murky golden wheat colored beer.

Nose is fairly typical hefe, wheat, citrus, a nice banana, hint of clove spices, a fruity and light malty aroma.

Taste is also typical, wheat flavors though a bit watery, some banana and hint of clove, slightly yeasty, although juicy. a bit malty, some light citrus, zest, bit fruity. Not much else going on but it's pretty much what it should be maybe slightly watery. Finish is fairly dry, lingering citrus, wheat, and light yeast.

Mouth is lighter bodied, good carb.

Overall not bad, nothing really wrong, typical hefe flavors, nice sumer wheat beer.

Bottle into a pint glass.

A - Poured cloudy, golden color with lots of head that slowly dissipated leaving lots of lacing around the glass.

S - Straight forward smell of wheat and yeast. Hints of grass and floral are present as well.

T - Wheat and grass upfront followed by yeast and slight presence of hops.

M - Light bodied with high carbonation.

D - Very drinkable and tasty, very light as well. Would definitely want to drink more in the future.
