Notes:
An authentic example of a Bavarian Hefeweizen. “Hefe” means cloudy or yeasty and “weizen” means wheat. This beer is made with mostly wheat and uses a true Hefeweizen yeast that gives it a fruity, banana aroma with just a hint of cloves. The tart finish makes this the perfect summer beer.

Had on tap at Jim'Nick's BBQ in Murfreesboro,TN.Came in a standard pint glass a dull hazed medium golden with a thinner white head atop, knowing it wasn't in the proper glassware kept the score from going lower on the appearance.clove and banana aromas stood out most and they were pretty assertive, light toasted wheat underneath.alighter feel in the mouth but it made the beer go down even easier than many of the style.Banana and yeasy phenol flavors with a refreshing little lemony twang in the finish wich gave it a little complexity. Not a bad beer, not a style i go to very often but Iam sure it beats the TN heat in the summer.

16 ounce pint - Flying Saucer Draught Emporium in Nashville, Tennessee.
Appearance: Clouded, gold body with a modestly sized, white head.
Smell: Freshly opened sack of Big League Chew, this beer is heavily scented of bubblegum. Oh, sure, you can drag out some notes of wheat, lemon, and clove tea, but it's predominately bubblegum.
Taste: A lightly sweet taste of that malted wheat, a little nibble of french bread, then, some lemon. Fresh clove hits. As with the aroma, the bubblegum character totally overrides the other flavors. Nil bitterness. Yep, it's pretty much bubblegum here, though there is a rebound of clove at the finish.
Mouthfeel: Falls just barely shy of being medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Overall: Hubba Bubba Hefe.

I had this on-tap at a killer bar in downtown Nashville.
A: Poured a wheaty, cloudy mustard yellow color, with a 1/2 finger retentative head. Look like a standard unfiltered Hefe.
S: I got some clove and banana, but this was somewhat muted overall, compared to many Hefeweizens on the market.
T: Crisp and highly drinkable, perfect for a hot summer day, with bubble gum notes. Once again though, not too powerful.
M: Yeasty and cushiony in terms of carbonation levels, with no booze to speak of, and a good amount of lacing.
O: This was a standard entry into the Hefe lexicon, but sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered!

On tap at the Yazoo brewery, served in a tall Hefeweizen glass. It arrived looking cloudy and golden wheat in color. A rocky white head filled the top of the glass. Great looking beer for the style.
The aroma shows lots of breadywheat and banana flavors to it. The yeasty, clove like spices are a little more reserved in it, which I like. Very nice for the style, and especially nice on this hot day.
In the taste I again get lots of banana and sweet, bready, wheat malts. A little clove spice comes out in the finish. Very drinkable and refreshing beer overall.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied for the style with moderate carbonation. Overall I thought it was a very solid beer of the style. I had this a few times over the weekend in Nashville and having it on tap, straight from the brewery, in the appropriate glass was a significantly better experience than the other times I had it around town. Maybe it was just the atmosphere or how hot I was, but that was my experience at least.

Had this on tap at Broadway Brewhouse
Pale honey gold with a finger of foamy bright white head. This beer is all kinds of hazy. Looks very enticing
The scent given off is dominated by bananas. Subtle clove background with some really nice bubblegum notes
The taste follows the nose. Great banana taste but lacking depth. Still, very refreshing
Medium bodied with ample amounts of carbonation.
I thought this was a very refreshing Hef and not a bad first beer for me to try in Nashville. I definitely recommend trying this out if you have a chance

This is much better on tap fresh from the brewery than out of the bottle. It looks like the typical hefeeweizen. Cloudy, hazy and grainy with a thin white head and spotty lace. The smell is faint and grainy with a back draft of banana, cloves and pepper. The taste is a bit thin and watery up front, but perfectly balanced between the banana and cloves. hints of black pepper and a tart hop bite in the background. A bit thin and watery, but a creamy swallow. Simple, refreshing, and easy to drink.

Served on tap in a pint glass. Hazy yellow body with a small head that faded quickly. Little lacing.
Decent aroma but light here as well. A little citrus and bready wheat. A hint of banana and spices in the background.
Solid hefeweisen flavor. Spicy yeast followed by banana and clove. Some light bubble gum in the background. More impressed with the flavor than I thought I would be.
Overall a nice representation of the style. Good for Yazoo.

A- Cloudy golden, as to be expected. Head was rather weak though.
S- smell is of apple, somewhat banana, some wheat. Some spicy clove presence to it.
T- Same as aroma. More apple than banana I feel.
M- Underweighted. Somewhat prickly carbonation.
D- Maybe my tastes have evolved/transformed, but this just wasn't as good as I remembered. Not a terrible beer, but not as good as some of Yazoo's more worthy products.

Served on tap at Sam's Sports Bar.
A: Cloudy, what you'd expect from a hefe, almost no head but I think that's because it was a bad pour, left a good amount of lacing.
S: Sweet malts, banana, orange, coriander, again, what you'd expect from a hefe, which is a good thing.
T: Banana really shows through here, malty, sweet. Lemon and wheat finish. Great taste.
M: Light carbonation, crisp, refreshing.
D: Very drinkable.
This is one of, if not the best, hefe that I've had. I may be partial since it's from Yazoo and my hometown, but I absolutely loved this beer.

The beautiful typical orange haze of a hefe, was overshadowed by its lack of head that didnt even have a chance to lace the glass. The smell was pretty blah as well, not much to speak. Needless to say the only thing that saved this beer from a bad first impression was the rave reviews I got from my friend sitting with me.
I don't know exactly what I was looking for in the taste, I just know that I didn't find it. It wasn't bad, but it didn't jump out at me either. The taste walked a thin line of being well-balanced and simply malnourished, if its possible for taste to be that. It's one step above average for the sole fact that there was nothing really wrong with it.
Theres a lot of hefes out there, like I said this one wasn't bad, but I sure as hell wouldn't run back to it. Try it, but if you have some selection within the style, go another direction.

on tap @ Yazoo Brewing
By default, I think this is served with a wedge of lemon. I asked for it without.
Pours a super-cloudy straw yellow. The head is very thin, almost nothing but a little ring at the top. Almost no lacing on this one. The smell immediately hits you with spice - clove, black pepperbit of orange zest, with a sort of toned down banana smell, some esters. There's still quite a strong fruity presence, a bit of tartness, and quite a bit of breadiness and spiciness from the yeast and wheat combining. The taste tends towards the more subtle aspects of the smell. I get creamy banana-like sweetness, almost like drinking that banana-flavored milk, or at least almost like an artificial banana syrup (which isn't really a problem since there aren't any real bananas in this). That gets followed up by a sharp citrus presence, really fresh tasting and kind of sharp, and some herbal notes in the back, spices, earthy kinds of spices come out too. The wheat also provides a nice sweetness to compliment the yeasty flavors, and the lemon-like note lingers throughout the entire drink. The body is medium, maybe a tiny bit lower. But it's certainly not thin. There seems almost to be waves of thinness and waves of fullness, like slightly pulpy juice or something, which must be what I think of from all of the citrus flavors present. The carbonation is nice and prickly, but not overpowering. This one kind of warms as it goes down, but it's really enjoyable. I think it has to be one of the best hefes made in America. It sort of leans less towards spiciness and more towards sweetness than I've seen some German hefes do, but everything is here, and really enjoyable. I would recommend this if you like a good hefeweizen.

I had this one on tap at the Flying Saucer in Nashville last week. From my notes:
A= This hefeweizen poured a pale gold color with a moderate amount of cloudiness for the style. The 1/2" white head disappeared fairly quickly, and did not leave any lace (nor was any expected really).
S= Fruity and yeasty aroma, full of banana and clove as well as the expected wheat "twang". Exactly what you would expect from the style.
T= The flavor profile was good but not as good as the aroma. A bit muted, but still showing soft flavors of banana, clove, citrus, and of course wheat malt sweetness. Mildly tart finish.
MF= Medium bodied with a soft (in my opinion just a bit too soft) carbonation feel.
D= Not the best and not the worst by far. Solid middle of the road, no complications hefeweizen here.

First of all, I love this beer, and all of Yazoo's beers at that. Being from Nashville, I'll admit that I'm more than a little biased, but they really are good beers, especially this hefe. The coriander is noticeable as in other wheat beers that I like. The color is straight on yellow and hazy like an unfiltered wheat bee should be, and that's... that's just tops.
As far as other flavors, I'm going to go out on a little bit of a whim here. I think it tastes a little bit like crayons. No kidding, crayons. And I'm saying this as if it's a good thing, because to me it is. Not only does this beer taste like home, it also tastes like childhood (which took place in Nashville). When it comes to a summer beer and I'm feeling homesick, one sip of this hefe, and I'm back at home on my buddy's back porch hanging out and talking about life.

I love this beer. I tried it when I went to the brewery in Nashville, it was poured into a sampler glass, and I wish I wasn't too buzzed to have another regular tumbler, but....
Nice appearance, a small fluffy pure white head when poured which fizzled quickly to only a thin ring. Lemony yellow/light honey in color, appealing shade. The sediment floating around makes the beer look foggy, more like frosty, pastel lemon sorbet. The lacing was light, flirting with moderate, in vertical formations, doesn't completely last.
The smell was citrus, though not very strong, hints of banana fruit, very well balanced light overtones of spice. Very pleasing, most definitely begs you to take a sip.
Wow, the taste is SO good, distinct banana! Very subtle lemon and spice hints, interesting and refreshing! The flavors work magic together, and the mouthfeel was very light and smooth with light carbonation. Very well balanced, great development and focus shift of tastes from initial sip to aftertaste. Light but not thin.
Absolutely delicious and drinkable, I could have these all night, for a week straight.

Sampled on tap at the Brewgrass festival in Asheville, North Carolina. Consumed on 09/20/2008 and reviewed from notes taken at the time.
The pour was very nice, classic hefe style here, with a rich and hazy and very light pale yellow color. A large, two inch high head of white came up over the top and settled down gently into a light and fluffy layer that all it took was a few seconds to wisp away. Lots of carbonation could be seen coming up from the bottom of the glass throughout the session.
The aroma was light and very pleasing. A light banana and clove like smell comes at me with the first whiff. Sweet, almost bubblegum like presence, and we all know that all too familiar strain of yeast that makes it just really stick out in a crown. Flavor came through right away, light and very bright with a light grain base that was quickly overshadowed by a light fruit like flavor that really just shined right through. Quick and clean with the lasting flavor of banana stuck on my tongue, this was simply done very well. Light body with a great amount of carbonation in it, I was shocked by how smooth and easy this one went down.
Overall I really thought this was a very solid ale. Certainly my favorite of theirs that I got to try. I would have no issues at all with getting this one again any day. It was really just fantastic and a wonderful little beer.

This in my opinion is the best Hefeweizen made in the U.S. It's got a great cloudy color with a decent head. The smell of banana is wonderful. Also the banana tones that you get when drinking this beer are excellent. I used to go to the taproom and have a pint while they were filling my growlers for me to take home (all filled with their wonderful hef). I've recently moved from Nashville to Seattle and the thing I miss the most is Yazoo's Hefeweizen. It's absolutely great!
(side note: I don't like the bottle version at all. I believe this beer should be poured from the tap and enjoyed. Unfortunately I think that the bottle loses far too many characteristics of this beer)

I drink this in their local Taproom. A pint served on tap.
A - It was looked nice but nothing special. Normal American pint glass. It is a classic style Hefeweizen. Suspended yeast gave it a white haze to cool yellow color.
S - Had a normal Hefeweizen smell to it.
T/M - It had a good mouth feel. Not to carbonated. It just worked. It was your classic light tasting beer. Cool and refreshing. Perfect for the seesion (summer).
D - Very Drinkable. It really is just a classic Hefeweizen. It is not reinventing the wheel, but it rolls.

S - Citrusy and grainy. Too grainy in the aroma for my liking.
T - Grainy with a hint of yeasty lemon and banana. Very tart at the end of the drink. The flavor combinations just didnt add up for me.

I had this beer on tap at the Yazoo brewery while visiting Nashville.
A - Poured a nice bright hazy yellow with a small white head.
S - BIG aroma of bananas. Some nice sweetness in there as well.
T - Hugely flavorful and near perfect for the style. Huge flavor of banana touch of sweetness, a small bit of tartness and cloves. By far the best tasting american Hefeweizen I have had, maybe the best overall.
M - Medium carbonation and a bit light. Very nice.
D - Perfect. Extremely flavorful and balanced. It would be perfect on a hot summers day or a freezing winter night.

I'm a big fan of Yazoo as one of Nashville's few local brews and the only one focusing on brewing rather than brewpubbing, and I'm a big fan of Hefe's. I find the Yazoo Hefe to be an excellent example of the variety. The flavor of cloves dominates in this brew and isn't nearly as citrusy as some other hefe's I've had. The beer finish clean and goes down easy. I have had a few bad Yazoo Hefe's that tasted stale and nearly undrinkable, but I'll chalk those up to bad luck as the majority have been outstanding
The Hefeweizen is now available in bottles, so I'll have to give that a shot and see how it does.

Pours to a nice head and cloudy yellow color. Aroma is traditional hefe--banana and clove. Flavor is typical hefe with spicy clovey notes and banana throughout. Nice wheat bite. Reminiscent of many other well-made American hefeweizens. An easy drinking, well-made hefeweizen.

From notes compiled at the 2006 Southern Brewer's Festival:
Pours a pale yellow straw, unfiltered, white foamy head.
Smells of banana, lemon, wheat.
Taste is banana, lemon, lemongrass.
Slightly cloying. This was nowhere near as good as the Wild Wacky Wit from Moon River.
Overall better than Widmer, but not great.

Half inch head initially, straw color, not too orange, but it still has taht hefe 'glow' to it. Yeasty but also a citrus zesty aroma to it. Standard clove, banana, and bubble gum flavors of hefes, maybe a bit stronger in lemon zest. Quite tangy mouthfeel, and this beer is very drinkable. Good hefe, but nothing really stood out too much.

A = a cloudy light orange-ish color with a 1/2" foamy head
S = citrus with a little bit of clove-like spiciness
T = a citrus taste with lemon dominating, but some banana and spices noticable
M = lighter than most hefe's I've had
D = this is a pretty good hefe and I like to drink it to support a local brewery. still can't top paulaner's hefe. if you're in nashville I'd recommend trying a pint or two of this stuff.
