Notes:
The tan lace clings to the glass as you raise the pint to your lips. Close your eyes and smile as the rich espresso notes fade to a dry, roasted finish. Exceptionally smooth and satisfying. Made with English Pale malt, roasted barley, black patent malt, and flaked barley. Hopped with East Kent Goldings and Target hops, and fermented with our English ale yeast.

bottle into tulip
appearance: black with off white 1 finger head
smell: roasted malts, espresso/coffee, dark chocolate, hazelnut
taste: prominent malt backbone with bready notes, dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, a bit watery and not much hop presence at all
mouthfeel: decent amount of carbonation, pretty thin feel
overall: A very session-able stout, on the watery side for the style but at 3% you could drink these all day and not feel them. Decent flavor's but nothing too strong or aromatic, on the tame side for a stout, even a lower abv.

A - Dark black with a ring of medium brown head.
S - Roast, espresso and a hint of chocolate.
T - A big roast profile followed by a hit of espresso and hints of chocolate and smoke.
M - Light to medium body. Light carbonation. A touch watery for the style at times.

Stout poured a nice opaque black with a nice white head that dissipated quickly without much lacing. Malty aroma with overtones of roasted malt and chocolate. Taste like it smelled with a pleasant malt, dark chocolate and coffee. Dry roasted finish, true to style. Not many hops to speak. A few hops at the end would have made it a bit more enjoyable but this is a fine, drinkable stout.

pours opaque black. big burly dark tan head retains very well.
big flavor. smokey, chocolate,.. i even get a little vanilla. finish is slightly charred roasted malts coming through with the bitterness of hops giving it a late, great bite. lacking the nice earthy tones I like in a stout though...
chewy. good mouthfeel overall..
overall: This beer has good flavor for a lower abv stout. The kinda thing that should be able to put guinness in it's place, but never will. Definitely lacks any chalkiness or earthy tones from the hops, but is pretty darn drinkable. Not sure if the flavors would come on too strong to session.. the malts are a bit charred-like and possibly keeps some of the other subtle notes shining through.

This beer is extremely dark. No light getting through. The head is very creamy and mocha color with small bubbles. On the nose I get some roasted characters. Almost smoky, but not quiet, maybe a slight charred note. The taste is coffee, roasted malts, and that charred note again. It's pretty creamy so they all just hit you at the same time, and leave you with a dry palate. I'm getting some coffee bitterness that is lingering for a while.
Overall this is a very nice session-able stout, and it's even better on NITRO!!!

Had this on cask infused with vanilla beans at 12 South Taproom.
The beer pour a very dark brown with very little head.
The smell is that of coffee and a little smokiness, along with the slight hint of vanilla.
The beer has a very light texture and taste. The vanilla is very subtle and is really only detectable on the finish. The vanilla taste opens up as the beer warms a little.
Overall, this was a very solid low alch stout that is very easy drinking.

Much better from the nitro tap at the brewery. Not only does it make it feel thicker and creamier on the mouth, but I think it brings more to the nose and perhaps the taste. Dominated with roasted coffee, a slight bit of smoke, and some cocoa. The taste has an underlying caramel, cocoa and coffee with some smoke and a bit of burnt flavor from black patent. The mouthfeel is greatly improved from the nitro. Overall a very good stout. What is most impressive is the flavor for such a low abv.

This has been one of my favorite Yazoo offerings for a while now.
A: Pours from the growler as a very dark brown, cola color. Immediately, a thick mocha head forms with large bubbles. Fades slowly leaving behind a fair amount of lacing. For a small Irish stout, this is about as good as it gets.
S: Chocolate, black coffee, roasted malts, some smokiness.
T: The roasted, coffee flavors mixed with a fair amount of smokiness are the first things I notice, maybe a slight molasses flavor as well. Finishes up with nice flavors of chocolate.
M: Medium bodied, but just a little on the watery side...not bad though considering the low ABV. Slightly dry finish.
O: Incredibly drinkable stout. Packs a punch in both smell and taste, especially for such a small beer in terms of ABV. Fresh from a trip to the UK, I can confidently say that Onward is as good as any sessionable stout that I sampled while there.

Growler, filled yesterday, into Sam Adams sensory glass. Been looking forward to trying this one for awhile now, and at $7 a growler fill, this is a bargain.
Pours black, fading to ruby brown at the very edges, with a big, 3 finger, dense brown head. Excellent retention and lacing. Can't knock the looks on this one.
Nose is light, a bit of smoke over a very roasty body, roasted barley and a bit of burnt grain. Nice nose.
Taste is nice - subtle but big flavor, not at all overwhelming. Starts with a very light earthy note, a bit of anise and a light smokiness coming through, leading into a flavorful but mild dry, roasty body that has just a bit of earthy, almost rye-like chocolate bite to it. Avoids some of the acidity and bitterness commonly found in many of the style, but still fits in to the niche nicely. Finish is dry, just a bit of lingering acidty, some smokiness. This isn't going to blow anyone's lid off, but man is it tasty, with a nice complexity. I see many, many growlers of this in my future.
Mouthfeel is light in body, maybe just a bit watery towards the finish, low carbonation is smooth and easy going.
Drinkability is fantastic. Easy going and inviting, this one just begs for a second glass before the first is even halfway done. An entire growler of this over the course of an evening would be no problem. Very happy with this one.

Had this a couple of times at the brewery and never reviewed the pre-nitro tap version, but I thought I should at least review the nitro-tap.
A- Very dark brown with the sinking nitro-bubbles creating a mild creamy head.
S- Chocolate and expresso type maltyness. Faint.
T- Initially chocolate and expresso malts followed by soft bitterness.
M- medium bodied, somewhat creamy. Lighter than anticipated.
D- Pretty good. It has a pretty smooth taste. Flavorful with a clean finish. Could have a few of these. I would personally like to see Yazoo do an oatmeal stout rather than the Irish stout, but it certainly is good.

Had at the Yazoo taproom 2/22/09.
Poured opaque with a nice, thick head. Smelled mainly of chocolate and espresso. Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Excellent drinkability, very smooth and tasty. Even my fiancee who normally hates stouts enjoyed it.
Easily one of the better stouts I've ever had. It's a shame this hasn't made it to widespread distribution and is only available at the Taproom (and a few bars around Nashville). It's easily one of Yazoo's better brews. I was terribly disappointed that there was no way to take any home with me.
