Formerly Cutlass (Amber Lager)

This malty lager is our most award-winning beer: it took gold, silver, and bronze medals at the Great American Beer Festival from 2006 to 2010. Cutlass Amber has a toasted, biscuity character. The slight sweetness comes from Crystal malt. Vienna malt contributes a remarkable smoothness and Munich malt gives an amber color and delicate aroma. Tettnang hops infuse the beer with a slight earthiness. Formerly named Heavy Seas Märzen, Cutlass Amber is our second best-selling beer. In 2012, Cutlass Amber won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup in the Vienna Lager category.

Thin, swift head on a soft brown semi-effervescent body in a willibecker....moderate cereal/grain malt taste...quite pleasing, and surprising, considering the usual alcohol-mongering this brewery pedals...lively, medium, dry palate...initial sweetness in average duration....wow--this fits the Oktoberfest spirit well....this smooth and sharp brew is character-filled and appropriate....a shame it’s a seasonal...

A clean copper color with a moderate head and lacing. The taste is crisp, malty and slightly sweet. A clean refreshing aftertaste. I really enjoyed this beer!

i really feel like people overlook heavy seas beers because they all seem to have been around so long, like old news, folks always chasing the new, but i was impressed with the mix pack we got recently, liked all the beers in here, remember that they are famous for a reason. this is a solid amber lager here, built with rich but not too heavy vienna and crystal malts, simple beer really, but flavorful from the grain, balanced by a robust bready lager yeast with a drying tendency that makes this real drinkable, and with nice carbonation, a really pretty classic rendering of a style that doesnt often do a whole lot for me, but this one really is solid. a little nuts and honey and granola sort of vibe to it, earthy and full, toasted and warming without being filling, some minerals in the finish, not overly complex but real drinkable for its color and malt structure. its a shame beers like this are being looked past now, almost like relics of early craft beer rather than still relevant players, but i liked this recently and would happily drink more of it if i had it...

Looks just like a light beer, lol, smell is light and not hoppy at all. Taste is sweet, crisp and pleasant to drink. The feel is light as well. Overall a solid easy drinking brew, but a little light for the style

poured into my corvette pilsner-style glass from a 12oz bottle.

look: dark golden color, very bubbly, short off-white-ish head that quickly formed into a nice little cap. minimal lacing.

smell: yeasty, a bit like hay, earthy and herbal. a little bit bready.

taste: earthy, herbal, slightly toast-y. a tiny bit of sweetness. reminds me almost of a pilsner. ever so slightly hoppy. not a lot of complexity to this beer.

feel: goes down super smooth. well carbonated. very crisp and clean.

overall: a good beer, but i'm not a huge fan. it's a nice crisp lager with a good flavor, but it isn't my preferred style. for what it is, though, it's pretty good.

Clear copper with little (no) head; beer is smooth and drinkable. Slightly sweet but not overbearing. Zero hint of hops. Overall, not a bad Vienna style malt, but not a stand-out either. Disclaimer: I’m an IPA fan, trying to branch out.

I am a sucker for these nautically-themed beers since I am retired U.S. Navy sailor. That, plus I am acquaintances with both owner Hugh Sisson and head brewer Chris Leonard.

From the bottle: "Brewed with Pale, Crystal, Vienna, and Munich malts, this amber lager boasts a toasted, biscuity flavor, perfectly balanced with Noble hops yielding a well rounded, smooth drinking beer."; "Clean Water Fund [-] A portion of the proceeds from each case of beer we sell goes to help CleanWater.org, a national organization dedicated to protecting the quality of the water we drink and the water we use to brew. Can't make great beer without clean water! Funds from the sale of this beer go back to the region where it was purchased."

I Pop!ped the cap & began a slow, gentle pour into the awaiting glass. Once it was sufficiently decanted, I gave it a vigorous in-glass swirl that raised just under three fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, light-tan head with decent retention that left behind some nice lacing in its wake. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a pronounced biscuitiness along with a light honey-like sweetness and a moderate grassiness. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very biscuity, but slightly sweet and partially earthy with a light grassiness. It put me in mind of summers at my maternal grandmother's house where she would bake biscuits & drizzle them with honey while my grandfather mowed the lawn. Mmm. I was surprised that others in the style include Samuel Adams Boston Lager, Great Lakes Elliot Ness & Dos Equis as all of them are much sweeter than this. Finish was semi-dry and highly refreshing. I would prefer this one to some/many of the others.
