12 ounce bottle poured into a snifter.
A: Pours a very dark brown/black color with a half finger head and light lacing.
S: I'm getting some hops, light roasted malts, and an almost watery scent.
T: Pretty bland for a Black IPA. Very much like the smell.
M: Medium bodied with decent carbonation.
O: Meh...not one I'd buy again. I guess my standards are just too high for Black IPA's.

12oz bottle poured into pint glass.
Apperance-It pours very dark brown with a thick 1 1/2 finger dark khaki head. Little bit of lacing making its way down the glass. 3.75
Aroma-light coffe, small amount of chocolate, hints of citrus. These are blended together pretty well, just seems rather light. 3.25
Taste-You get a little bit of milk chocolate at the front of your tongue. Then some hop bitterness toward the middle and end. After taste leaves a bland stale feeling in my mouth. 3.25
Feel-decent feel, not to thin or thick, right in the middle. ABV is small enough to drink a few. 3.5
Overall-I've heard this one is hit or miss and I could see liking this more on a another day, but today it's just not to my liking. All of the flavors are rather light. If it had more if a hop feel I think I would like it a bit more. Even so, its not a total waste of time and I would love to revisit it in the future. 3.25

We crack the top on our grumbler, pouring a brew of the deepest mahogany browns with soft ruby hues around the edges into our Founders snifters. It holds a massive three and a half finger head of tight, brown-grayish bubbles, showing great retention. Thick and sheety patterned lacing is left all around the glasses. No haze or sediment is noted, and carbonation appears to be active. The nose is zesty, with grapefruity and herbal hops, Flintstone vitamin fruitiness, light woody mossiness, dried apricots, chalk, dried kelp, pale malt crispness, brown malt metallics and faint roastiness, and curiously soured, puckering yeastiness. With warmth comes a deepening of the malts, with sweeter caramels, lactics, and a soured yeastiness that borders on Bretty bite. Our first impression is that this is a nicely flavored black ale, with strong, resilient hops, pleasantly dark malts, and a curiously puckered and soured component through the end. As we sip, the taste opens with floral, herbal, and brightly citric hops, clean black malts, foamy plastics, lemon zestiness, faint soapy pucker, mango and papaya fruit juiciness, light bubblegums, chalk, and pale malty base. Moving to the peak is a blend of sweeter strawberry, pineapple, apricot, and coconut fruitiness, with bittered char of black and coffee malts, general roastiness, moss, and mineral. Lemon rind bitterness pulls us to a soured and puckered ending wash, with metallic and lemony yeastiness, ginger root, pineapple rind, thick chalks, muddy minerals, piney sap, fusel chemicals, pale and wheat crust maltiness, fusel booze, honeysuckle, and beautifully nectary hops. The aftertaste breathes of green banana skins, mineral, tinny and irony metallics, chalk, dust and musk, crispy pale malts, bubblegum esters, pale malt toastiness, straw, and grassy, citric rind, and nectary hop varietals. The body is medium, and the carbonation is soft and medium. Each sip gives nice slurp and smack, with decent cream and froth, and pleasant finishing pucker. The mouth is cooled and coated, with chalky astringency of roast down the tongue and hard palate. The abv is appropriate, and drinkability is quite high.
Overall, what we enjoyed most about this beer was its nose and flavoring. These were both surprisingly robust, zesty, hoppy, and well-balanced, helping to keep things fresh and drinkable. The nose especially held a bright zestiness that really reminded us of Lagunitas Sucks, in the sense that it was fruity, hoppy, and cleanly blended. The grain bill is obviously much darker, but this only contributed to the intrigue and depth of the taste. The feel was creamy and smooth, with soft finish. This brew exhibits the premiere blending of styles into the American Black Ale, and is our favorite to date from the brewery, and perhaps even a rival to the illustrious Sublimely Self-Righteous.
