I have been going to the globe for about fifteen years now, and it is still one of my favorites, though the prices are a little high. The best part of the globe is the atmosphere -- large windows give you a good view of the goings-on outside. This is a fun place to go alone sometimes.
The globe's beer selection is not what it used to be, but it is still large. They have 8-10 taps with the usual standbys for a beer pub. I usually opt for the Paulaner.
I have had the food a couple of times, and I would recommend the steak sandwich, though it is pricey. The globe puts out cheese and bread during happy hours, which is nice. I would avoid happy hour on Friday since it gets very loud and crowded. The globe also has a nice upstairs that people use for parties.
This bar is nice for the mature crowd most of the time, but not late nights, as you might expect.

The globe is one place in town that was known for there good beers on tap. The used to not have any domestic swill on tap.
But I guess in a college town they have bills to pay. They do always have at least one great belgian on tap and several brittish and german hefe on hand. The food is only available at lunch but is a great twist on the normal options available near bye. The service is what makes this bar rock. The bar tenders are really on it.The bottle selection is one of the best in town. They have a good selection on wine by the glass and the largest singlemalt scotch selection in Athens. The other good feature that there arcoss the street from the Ga. Theater were all the major touring acts come to town.

Visited while at Classic City Brew Fest. Nice-looking wood everywhere, lots of grad-students and adults, an older crowd for a college town. Decent selection. About 15 on tap, no macros. Probably 25-30 in bottle, including Sam Smith, Hop Pocket, Bass, etc. Good prices, a giant Hoegaarden glass filled up went for $6.50 and you keep the glass. Didn't eat but it seemed like typical fare, I think I saw steak offered too. One of the nice bars in Athens, but the music was kept up loud the whole time, definitely worth checking out though.

Convenient location right on Lumpkin. As you walk in, you see a nice feeling room with a spacious twenty seat bar and ceiling fans. Great music playing the whole time I was there. It almost feels a bit more sophisticated and is a welcome difference from some of the louder college bars in town. This could be one of Athens' best beer geek bars.
The selection is nice. Ten to fifteen taps with three or four local selections and highlights like Maudite and Delirium Tremens. I was also delighted to get my beer in the proper glassware.
The staff was friendly and helpful.
The beer was a little pricey and the beers come out of the tap pretty cold but there isn't too much they can do about that.
Not a bad place and I'm sure I'll see this place next time I'm in Athens.

A lived in Athens for a while, so we were drawn there from time to time.
So when in Athens we go to the Globe. It is very comfrotable with a better
than average draught selection and a fair number of bottles. The used to
have a large slection of single-malt scotch, but last time i went i saw nothing
The bar is a nice horseshoe, and the walls are window filled so you get
a drak cozy atmosphere with the wood, couches, and rocking chairs,
but you don't feel like you're in a dungeon.
Great place to chill and chat and drink a few beers.

The Globe is an island in multiple ways. In a college town with the most bars per square mile of any city in the country, you're going to have a lot of stinkers. A lot. However, you also get a few gems. This is one of them. Secondly, in the deep South, you will be inundated with talk of college football, NASCAR, southern drawls, and the like. This is usually a good hideaway from that. You'll often find non-English speakers eating/drinking/socializing here and they have weekly foreign language dinners if you're looking to work on you French or German. Definitely provides a nice, unique atmosphere for Athens.
Beer selection is good, but not as good as Trapeze or Blue Sky. Food is not bad. Half-pours for $2 on Tuesdays is pretty cool, especially when you get Old Rasputin. Definitely not a bad deal. Cool upstairs and comfy setting. Open early, big booths, good waitstaff.
Definitely worth a visit.

The Globe is also a great place to have a beer in Athens, GA. My girlfriend and I were on a daytrip to Athens and stopped by. The place had a sprinkling of customers and really began to fill up around 8:30 pm. A mixed crowd of locals and college students. It has a similar floor plan and atmosphere of the brick store in Decatur, GA but much smaller. A very interesting painting / drawing hangs over the bar that chronicles the history of wine making - very cool looking. I'm thinking that the Globe had at least 10 taps and a decent selection of specialty / microbrews in the cooler to the right of the bar. My girlfriend ordered the carrot cake which was really good (yea I got a few bites), if the rest of the food is as good then they get high marks. Since I only tried one item, I will not rate them on food this time around. If I were a local this would be one of my hangouts, it has a very nice relaxed feel to it.

To understand the rep this place has earned, I think the context has to be considered. In a town full of crappy frat dives, this is a very nice bar. For a place to just have decent atmosphere and serve any non-macros was a revelation in Athens (before Trappeze - go there instead of here!).
So the Globe is definitely a pretty nice spot, but it's nothing worth raving about if you ask me. They charge a bit much for the beers, which, while a decent selection, are not exotic. The food's alright, but nothing you haven't had before at other bars/pubs. And while it's touted for its "adult" atmosphere, the music is still pretty loud, and it still feels like a bar.
For all the nitpicking, though, it's a fun place. Free bread and cheese for happy hour, and the occasional sea chanty singing group make this a pretty neat place, if not all it's cracked up to be.

The Globe is an overrated piece of crap and I say this as someone who formerly loved going there. When I first moved to Athens it was the only respectable beer bar. They still have about 15 or so taps of good beers (non macros, no micros) and a pretty good bottle selection (again, no micros, just imports), hence the decent ratings in those categories.
Their food always sucked and when they decided to add actualy entrees it made it even worse. The service is awful. Servers are mostly rude goth kids who know dick about the beers. Bartenders are sometimes better but it depends on the crowd and which one you get.
They often overcharge a lot for their beers, once serving me a $13 chimay in a small water glass, WTF!
I have no idea how this place won an award for the best bar in the country (or something to that effect).
I have not been in the Globe for at least 6 months because they have annoyed me so much with their crap service and high prices. You know what makes the whole thing worse, the atmosphere kinda sucks. If you are there in the day and there are seats then it might be ok. Otherwise you are stuck hovering over one of the shitty couches hoping someone leaves or trying to squeeze into a bar without having servers push you out of the way while trying to get an order.
Globe, you have declined greatly in my 3+ years in Athens and you have a hell of a lot to prove before I return regularly. Besides, Aromas is way better and you don't have to deal with downtown crowds and traffic...and let's not forget about Trappeze, the best beer bar in GA!
