Label reads 07 L264 M3...maybe the 264th day of 2007 (August?), who knows.

Pours from the .5L a dark brown, but is a dark transparent crimson in the light. Two fingers of light tan foam rise and fall, maintaining a healthy skim.

Bready aroma with banana esters, underlying licorice, and a tiny bit of mysterious spice.

Lightly sweet, bready and malty, fairly full-bodied with a good hop bitterness towards the end into the finish. Lingering tobacco leaf, wood, and dark chocolate. A minor note of grain is there in the back, but it's not unpleasant.

Carbonation is balanced, although it seems to lose a little after a few swirls. Light stickiness on the lips, but not too sweet by any means. Robust and full, a perfect winter choice for a snowy night.

It's on the lighter end of the color scale for a Doppelbock, sort of a deep, clear amber-copper. The head is fluffier and less dense than I might expect, but sizeable enough and with good enough retention that it doesn't look bad. It's able to drop some spotty lacing in moderation on the glass.
The aroma is malty and breay with some good sweetness and a touch of molasses to it. It might not be as big or robust as the best out there, but I think it's pretty standard for the style as it used to be or as it's still brewed classically in Germany. A bit of cocoa and a gentle bite actually make for a fair complexity. I'd liken it to a cookie that's not too sugary and is baked with ginger and molasses.
The flavor's not as complex, and it gets a little too light for my liking. There's only a hint of either the molasses or anise/black licorice notes typical to a doppel, breads are less pronounced, and some of the strength of the nose is lost. It is a little spicier and has just a ghost of something like floral hops bitterness.
The mouthfeel is where I'm really at a loss. Who took a robust style like this and decided it would be better to take out some of the depth and body, to thin in out, and thought it would be better? I'm not sure I can get into a light-bodied doppel, to be honest. Maybe it's not that bad. It picks up a bit as it goes. Still, let's give this one some more heft.

Poured from the .52 Gal, swing-top, bottle.

The beer was a clear, dark-amber colour with a very white, foamy head. It smells lighter than one would think that a bock should be. Very mellow malt and hop blend. The taste was slightly metallic for some reason, but ignoring that, the beer was slightly malty with a subtle hop flavour. Nothing overwhelming... pretty generic "beer" taste. Not good, but not bad... nothing special about it. Definitely doesn't taste like most bock beers.

Would I buy it again? Probably not.

Poured into a glass. Looks brown golden brown. Small amount of head moderately bubbly. Not very much taste or after taste. Smooth and easy to drink. Smells a little hoppy and slightly skunky, tinny. Lacking taste somewhere and what is there is pretty average. Nothing very special, nothing too bad about it either.

Shared this massive 3L bottle amongst JLindros and BPK59. Poured into a duvel tulip. Reviewed from notes.

A - Pours a clear burnt malty hazel appearance with a nice two finger off white heads that fades to leave a light thin blanket.

S - Aromas of burnt sugars, caramel, and malts.

T - More of those burnt caramel and soft malts. Slightly metallic. Really not too shabby.

M - Mouthfeel is slightly under carbonated and a bit thin.

O - Overall this was a solid dopplebock. I believe I paid under $20 for this 3L so for the price it was definately worth it.

Thanks to rudzud for sharing this monster 3L bottle!

Light fizzy head, crystal clear ruby mahogany red.

Nose like a cheaper doppelbock, cheaper for a true german that is, light fruity esters, wheat, molasses, hint of sweetness that comes like booze and cola, hint if raisin.

Taste starts with lots more dark wheat, caramel, molasses, esters with more fruity flavors, light banana, raisin, clove, biscuit, bit of booze that gets a bit warming, spicy chewy hops, light creamy. Hint of metallic twing but barely. Finish is dry but still sweet, more biscuit, wheat, plenty more raisin and light bananas foster, bitter spicy hops.

Mouth is med to a bit heavier bodied, light syrupy, decent carb, some warming booze.

Overall not bad, a bit cheap but cheap for a true german doppelbock, nice malts and wheats, fruits, bit boozy too.

Poured from the 500ml bottle into my shaker pint. I like the swing top German bottles, not only because they are good for homebrew later, either. I saw the big 2L bottle in the store but I wanted to taste it before going huge.
There was a lot of carbonation and bold strong flavors, mostly the alcohol punch following the strong maltiness I usually associate with a doppelbock, but there was something extra in there, a little spiciness, that I think made it an effective winter beer too.
Not the best doppelbock I have had, but rather good and a nice presentation. I will try the maibock next from them.
Purchased from Liquor Barn in Niles, I, a good place for Polish, Czech, and German beers.
