Never had heard of this brewery, but a mean lookin' Hippo caught my attention in the single bottles section. Snagged a 12oz for $2 and change. American Belgian Wits have a tendency to fall short in the category, but I'm hoping this one can stand up to the style's reputation.

Poured into a Belgian glass, this appears a hazy orange hue with a marginal head that soon reduces into a thin white film floating atop the beer.

Pungent citrus aromas invade my senses immediately, with a strong emphasis on orange and lemon. Common Belgian peppery spiciness is distinct and detectable.

Taste follows the lead of the nose. Orange, coriander and white pepper takes the front end, fading into some wheat and yeast funkiness. Alcohol shows a bit more presence in the back end as the beer warms. Not too shabby.

Medium bodied with a semi-dry finish. Seems a little heavier than most other wits; has a bit more bite to it.

Overall, not the greatest representation of the style, but pretty tasty stuff. I liked it well enough, and definitely worth a try if you're into the style.

12oz bottle poured into pint

Clear soft golden glow with a thin topping of white head. Fades out completely without retention or lacing.

Notes of cracked pepper and spice with a formidable sweetness. Touches of honey and yeast with fruity esters and light warmth.

Yeasty and sweet up front with honey. Cracked pepper, assorted spice, wheat and straw. Thicker backbone, touch of citrus and fruit. Slightly cloying on the back end with a boozy spike.

Fuller medium body, slightly higher carbonation level, sticky and bubbly on the tongue. Fairly average, too sweet and unnecessary alcohol level. I usually look for refreshing, snappy flavors in witbiers, but this doesn't really do it for me.

Available around here, but thanks to Juliusseizure (Reddit) for send me this as an extra.

Pours a lighter looking fizzy almost 1 finger head fades at med pace with little lacing, typical for a double wit though, fairly hazy golden tan Orange color.

Nose plenty of wheat, lots of wheat and wit beer base malts, then wit spices, light coriander clove like, orange peel zest, etc. Then lots of Belgian esters, fruity esters, hint of green apple and light booze with phenols.

Taste similar, fluffy airy malt with lots of carbonation, plenty of wheat and wit flavors, light grassy like malt, touch of banana, spices like clove, coriander, and other spices, light Clementine like citrus rind, etc. Belgian yeast takes over, light fruity esters, hint of booze with phenols and hint of green apple and fruity esters. Finish is drier but sticky sweet at the same time, lingering wheat and esters with light booze phenols.

Mouth is med bodied, fluffy with lots of carb, light warming booze

Overall not bad, not a big fan of the style and usually not the brewery either but this was pretty decent for a double wit. Nice lighter end spices, nice wheat flavors, nice Belgian yeast additions esters and booze phenols, and fairly drinkable.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Slightly hazy amber with one-finger, white head that lasted a minute. Not much lacing.

S: Banana and wheat.

T: Moderate sweetness and light bitterness. Banana and spice and grain.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Watery.

O: I wasn't too impressed by this beer. Too much banana and too sweet.
