Moylan's Brewery - Moylander Double IPA

Look - Pours a clear copper amber with a great head. Sticky lacing. Some carbonation, calmer cousin to the Hopsickle.

Smell - Sweet bready malts in the aroma. Faint but mouth-watering hop profile.

Taste - Sweet malts and then a creeper bitter hop comes in and amplifies for a bit until it is fully on blast. Well done!

Mouthfeel - Rests bitter hops. Sticky and malty at the same time. Not very boozy at all. Rather refreshing. Very drinkable and smooth.

Overall - Well balanced brew. Enhanced malt profile works well with the super bitter creeper hops.

Pours a nice mild golden color with a huge frothy head into my glass. I've had this in my fridge for a few days.

Despite what appears to be a big dose of citrus and pine resin upfront, it seems quite humble. Malt is sweet and buttery.

A lot more pine resin upfront. Decent amount of hop bitterness coats the mouth and the malt comes off as a bit "chewy" as a result.

Lots of alcohol heat here and it does overwhelm the palate a bit. Not a serious impediment as you have a very nice dose of bitterness to finish.

A good dose of bitter makes this a good choice. The alcohol heat may be too much for some though but if you age it, you lose more of the hop character. Choices.

First foray into Moylander's - review will be written at opening of bottle and review half an hour later and amended as necessary.

A - poured into a tulip. Pretty, clear, light amber with a little bit of dark orange. Head is medium and settles to about a finger-breadth. Sticky and lacy.

S - sweet and peaty followed by a little bit of bitterness. I don't smell a ton of hops for a DIPA, but if it doesn't hit me in the face with citrus, I usually can't pick out the idiosyncrasies. I don't smell any booze for a 8.5%er. Reminds me a lot of Red Rocket Ale.

T - not at all what I expected. With the Scottish-like smell, I expected badness (personal preference). But this is very interesting. Sweet caramel and almost dark chocolate notes followed by a piney hop bitterness. There's a little bit of that Scottish blech at the end, but for the most part this is complex and good.

M - light-medium and a little oily. Somewhat sticky on the palate. Very little alcohol warmth - the hop bitterness does stick around though.

O - Pretty good here. The bottle is plastered with all the medals this beer has won. Personally I don't see it - there are plenty of DIPAs I would prefer. I don't think this would crack my top 25, but that isn't saying it's not a good beer. We'll see how a little warmth treats it - it was sitting in the back of the fridge. [Not much to add after waiting a bit. It actually seems to have gained a little brightness. Maybe a little apple is coming out in the taste as well, but I'm probably making that up.]

On-cask at the brewery. 10oz snifter. Reviewed from notes.

A: Served a deep golden amber with lemon highlights beneath a very dense and fluffy bright white head. Great head retention, streaky spotty lace.
S: Pine and citrus pith nose. Super hoppy over all. Maybe a hint of caramel but barely.
T: Huge grapefruit and citrus pith taste follows the nose. Hints of caramel malt and pineapple poke through. Fresh and green tasting with some slightly rough alcohol (but not hot) bringing up the finish. The aftertaste has a great fresh lingering bitterness.
M: Soft carbonation, thinner cask style body, very creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Soft overall, slightly greasy.
O: Much better than the one bottle I've had. Definitely recommended on cask if you find it.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a BrewDog cervoise glass. This bottle is old, like a year old, so fingers crossed for the best.

A: Clear amber and effervescent liquid, capped by a finger of thick, not-quite-white head.

S: Caramel malt, faint hops. Rich and rewarding.

T: Eh, it's good, but I think age has killed the pizzaz. Lightly fruity, noticably malt-forward, and vaguely alcoholic. Lingering, intense bitterness on the aftertaste hints at what must have been a blisteringly high IBU.

M: A bit dull, but not too bad.

O: Mhmm. Solid DIPA. Recommended, drinkable, and worth trying again (fresher this time).

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass.

Enjoyed this one tremendously.

Strong hoppy taste but huge hints of raisins and plums. Surprises you.

I want to go back to this one due to the fact that I had about 4 different IPAs before drinking this. But this one stuck out as being unique. Light in the boddy but strong atypical IPA taste.

Will update the review upon the 2nd session

Hazy copper colour, one finger of white head, sticky with lots of lace left behind. Smell is loaded with pine and citrus, grapefruit and orange among all the tropical fruit scents here, some malt sweetness on the tail end. Taste is more citrus forward with some pine in there as well, mostly fruity tough, orange/tangerine, grapefruit, as Liam noted I did get a bit of peanut as well, malt bill is fairly prominent as well here and leaves a bit of sweetness. Oily texture, lightly carbonated, fairly full body with a pretty good feel. I found this to be quite pleasant and something I could easily revisit, would love to try some other offerings from Moylan's in the future.

Bottle shared by Pino, 650ml into a tulip. Fresh from the brewery.

Clear orange-red, with a huge white head. Sticky lace with tons of retention. Nose is resiny, citrus, light pine, mild cedar and light caramel sweetness. Taste is something I despise in most overly hopped ales, something that I can only describe as resembling peanuts/peanut oils. Some strong grapefruit, citrus, pine and a good load of malt in there as well. Sticky full feel, and some alcohol. Hop profile fails on the palate for me - not up my alley within the style at all.

A - amber with clear thick creamy lacing

S - sweet caramel with some citrusy mango smell

T - Brown bready, earthy hoppy that lingers

M - warm, smooth and lots of hops, medium body with high medium hops

It was a good double IPA. I do like the Hopsickle better, but this was pretty tasty

On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, and some melon-like aromas. Taste is much the same with a herbal hop flavor on the finish. There is a fairly high hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it's quite herbal and bitter in the flavor.

Thanks to jtd1969 for sharing this bottle with me.

A - amber wtih a thin, white head that has little retention

S - caramel, earthy, herbal, piny

T - caramel, wheat bread, piny, herbal; this is very malty and very hoppy though the balance is a bit off. The flavors seem to be at odds with each other.

M - warm, mediumto full bodied, well carbonated

This was a bit of a let down. The malts were strange and the hop character didn't mesh well at all. The flavor profile just didn't sit well with me. I would stick with the Hopsickle if I wanted a DIPA from Moylan's.

Bottle from Beer Deluxe.

A - Dark-ish golden pour. Bright. Good carbonation with a two finger fluffy white head.Good rings of lace and a finger of retention.

S - Pungent hops. Citrus, grapefruit, pineapple, resin, juicy hops.

T - A nice sweetness and a smack of citrus, pineapple core, and grapefruit. Very to the point with a generous hop dose.

M - Mild carbonation, medium to full and chewy body with a pleasant pineapple-like bitterness.

O/D - A pretty decent IIPA. Nothing mind-boggling but hits the nail on the head directly. Good stuff.

Served in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a golden-copper color with a medium white head. The head fades rather fast to leave a moderate amount of lacing.

Smell – The aroma has a nice biscuit base with a strong of grapefruit and s more earthy hop aromas. There are bits of pine as well as a light tropical fruit aroma mixed in, but quite light in comparison to the other aromas.

Taste – The taste matches the aroma quite well. In the beginning there is a big bready flavor with a strong presence of some more citrus (lemon and grapefruit) hop flavors. There is a light tropical fruit flavor that is present up front, but this fades quite fast. The breadiness stays throughout the taste, but the hop flavors transition. Toward the middle the citrus in the beginning loses some ground to an earthy and pine hop flavors. As the taste advances even further, the hops switch again in character and bitter the taste quite a bit at the end with a great deal of grapefruit hop flavor.

Mouthfeel – A slightly above average body with a very average level of carbonation.

Overall – A decent double although nothing to really go out of your way for. If looking for a nice bitter taste that lingers in the mouth then this is for you. It was worth the try, but is not something I would go to again and again.

Serving: Bomber into my arrogant bastard ale glass.

A: Pours a transparent copper color. About a quarter inch of head is seen at the top of the glass. A fair amount of carbonation is visible in the glass but nothing excessive. Attractive beer.

S: Citrusy, with bits of pine, lemon, lime and grapefruit. Subtle but very nice.

T: Very bitter up front, malt follows pretty quickly behind but the hop bitterness is prolonged throughout. Bitter on the finish as well, particularly in the back of the mouth. Pretty good.

M: Slides around and coats everything pretty well. The bitterness in this one dominates everything in my mouth. Very good.

O: Very good DIPA. The bitterness seems to be amped up in this one. Would definitely buy again.

Pours a golden amber color. It's very clear and has a superb egg white head that's very frothy and lingers for good while. Nice

The aroma is this beers best attribute. Scents of orange peel and pine dominate. Slight grassy notes and malty tones are there but overpowered by the hops, which is a good thing.

surprisingly, this was fairly dry for a double IPA. Slight biscuit notes upfront followed a good amount of bitterness. Finishes dry with hop bitterness lingering.

Mouthfeel is fairly light for a double. This is highly attenuated and dry.

Overall, this is a very good example of the style. I prefer a little more maltiness in big IPAs but this well balanced. It's all about the hops, which is a good thing.

Tulip

A - Burnt Sienna semi translucent, 1/4 finger slightly off white head and some sticky lacing

S - sweet, very nice bold malts, pineapple, nice sweet yeast, grapefruit, sour citrus, island flowers, grass, slight resin, nice bitters and some nice earth/wood

T - sweet and bitter malts, very floral, huge citrus, sugar, nice sweet yeast, toasted grains, some wood and nice soil/grass

M - Medium plus body, decent balance, nice complexity, medium minus acidity and long bittersweet finish

D/O - Very crisp, refreshing, fresh and awesome. Little more bitter than sweet, hop than malt and even out of the bottle, very fresh! If you love, big hoppy IPA's this one is a nice choice

Final Thoughts - At $7 a 750ml and almost 9% abv, this is a nice beer, just not the best price

Pours honey amber with orange highlights and an off white creamy head which quickly dissipates to leave some lacing.

My first inhalation I smelled anise, but never again, also floral hops and sweet malt in tandem. Not quite the hops presence I am looking for.

The taste follows the nose, hops and malt in balance, with a hint of boozy astringency. Smooth finish and a bitter grapefruit aftertaste.

I liked this beer, not as big and as bold as my favorites, but lots of flavor and some complexity. I am wishing the hops had control here, but it's in balance, not quite what I want from a DIPA.

Bomber poured into a tulip

Thanks to Lukie for the beer. Much appreciated.

A-- Poured a clear orange amber color. One finger of off white head that quickly faded to film. Left a little bit of spotty lacing and a half ring as well.

S-- Pretty big malt backbone. Lots of toffee with backing grapefruit, citrus and pine. Fruit got bigger as it warmed but a bit of a sickly syrupy smell.

T-- Orange, Grapefruit, Pine and a lot of Toffee and a sort of candied sugar taste. Very pungent.

M-- Really pungent in the mouth. Slick and oily but a dry finish.
Odd medicinal orange/ Grapefruit feel. Medium feel and lighter medium carbonation.

O-- Good but too sweet at times. Would buy again as there is just a lack of DIPA's on the market here. Well hidden alcohol and pretty easy to work around even with the sickly medicinal taste.

A: hazy and unfiltered. 3 finger creamy off white head. Needs filtering.

S: slight citrus, slight pine.

T: not really a hop bomb. Malt is balanced and alcohol is balanced well. Hop characteristics are not as pronounced as the style dictates however or maybe I'm just used to citrus DIPAs. Bitterness hits at the end really nicely.

M: Good. Right on par for style.

O: Would not get again b/c so much competition in DIPA category and this didn't knock my socks off (wearing flip flops.) Although it was a great beer. Just needs more nose.

I love the fact we see this brewery on our shores now and been looking forwards to this one.

A-Hazy golden amber hue which leaves a creamy dense two finger head that stays.

S-Toffee,caramel,resiny piney hops and boiled candy.

T-It really is a nice mix of sweet and bitter as it starts off sweet with the toffee,caramel and candy and is finished off with citrus,grapefruit and a piney hop bitterness.

M-Medium bodied and semi sticky.

O-A very pleasant ADIPA which really balances the sweet and bitter tastes quite well and would drink again cheers.

Pours a nice orange with a 2 finger white head. Lots of bubbles in the glass.

Aroma is pine with a slight touch of citrus and caramel malt.

Very malt forward. Tons of sweet caramel malts interrupted briefly by a dryish piney aftertaste that may be slightly astringent.

Mouthfeel and carb are both good.

I prefer my DIPA's on the hoppier side. There are plenty of hops here, but the malt still is dominant and the hop profile is kind of one dimensional.

310ml glass at The Local Taphouse, Darlinghurst.

Pours an orangey-golden colour. Nice off-white head of foam that laces very well. Head retention isn't amazing, as a ring soon forms.
Howeverthe clarity is good.

Smell is strong, some fruit, plenty of citrus and grapefruit, this is a DIPA unreservedly going off the smell, like it or not. Some hop resin candiness as well.

Taste has a lot of grapefruit from front to back along with a bit of candied hop at the end.

Solid bitterness all the way through...this is more like the enamel-ripper that I expected from Hopsickle. Harsh at times, but that is the game it is in.

Solid all the way through, bitter, but if you don't like it try the other styles.

Poured from a bomber into a standard pint glass...

A - Pours a very clear, bubbly golden orange color. 1 finger off white head that clings to the sides.

S - Bold grapefruit, and some sweet carmeley malts.

T/M - Solid bitter hop front taste, that lingers on the tongue, but finishes a little weak in my opinion for a DIPA. Medium mouthfeel.

O - I Just feel a little let down with this one. I was expecting something a lot more aggressive. The malt is heavier than I would prefer.

A: Poured into my...O wait WTF...beer explosion. As soon as I popped the cap on this brew, the beer followed....luckily it made it to my pint glass. So...Poured into my pint glass, this brew pours a hazy golden yellow with a thick sturdy head that is leaving some ok lacing. Almost a 4.5.

S: The aroma consist purely of notes of fruit without a ton of depth. Pineapple and a fresh apple orchard on a crisp fall day.

T: The flavor is mostly bittering hops. If you love bitter IPAs, this brew is for you. I was hopping for a little more malty sweet background (which would help bump up the ABV with some fermentable sugars).

MF: Overcabonated, but this is a raw, untamed brew.

Overall, this is barely an above average IPA. It can improve with complexity and a little higher ABV.

A: Pours a cloudy / opaque copper color with plenty of head even with a steady pour. Leaves plenty of lacing as the head slowly dissipates. Plenty of unfiltered goodies to be found settling as it warms.

S: Mostly contains piny hops with an earthy undertone. Can just barely pick up a touch of sweetness mixed with the alcohol. Even with all this going on at once it appears to have quite a malt bill as well.

T: This one tastes much stronger than the nose lead on. For a very brief moment at the beginning you get the malt and touch of sweetness. Possibly caramel or maple syrup? Immediately after the initial taste you dive straight into a strong pine and floral bitterness. This one starts relatively dry and keeps going from there. Very bitter finish that keeps you reaching for more.

M: Medium bodied with a thick mouth feel. Possibly a bit over carbonated but not by much. Very resiny and clingy.

O: While I've only recently gotten into DIPA's I have had the chance to enjoy quite a number of them. However, this one was just to bitter. I tend to lean towards the sweeter side and this one was just not there. The price was higher than it's competition as well. This one just isn't for me.
