Red Brick's third entry into their Brick Mason series #1 for 2011. Brewed in the style of an Old/Stock Ale, there is no label information nor bottle date.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to my Brick Mason Snifter. Served north of 47º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Frothy tannish head with slightly above average retention over a pale reddish-brown deep tone body. Some mild sediment. Carbonation is spritely and plentiful. A decent appearance, head quality was pretty nice but still worthy of more. 3.5

(Smell) Potency of tart red grapes, acidic notes, mild grain alcohol. Much less malt body than I'm used to for old ales, and what is there is doughy. It's rather sour and fruity with a medium vinous, dry aroma. Not sure if I find it enjoyable or not, but it's a bit out of balance nonetheless. The aroma is lacking focus. 3

(Taste) Dark fruits, grapes and figs are most notable but a touch of brown candied sugar and some lightly toasted sourdough malt contribute a mild sweetness and body to enhance the body and better balance the flavor profile. Oak notes are not overdone, just right for the flavor profile of this beer. Mild fruity esters like cherry and plum are notable throughout and the beer finishes with a tart grape note- some mild wine comparisons are evident. A bit better balance than in the aroma, but it's still not likely to fall into everybody's liking, as it's neither pleasantly sour nor robustly malty. Rather, it's seemingly uncommitted to either possibility. 3.25

(Mouthfeel) Mild creamy texture, mild thickness with some residual sweetness and a medium dry, tart finish. Mild sour, lightly vinous finish with complimentary brown sugar notes. Slightly boozy for a medium alcohol presence. Body is light+ for the style, medium+ overall. The carbonation is very smooth and mild, even for the style. Some mild crispness wouldn't have negatively paired with the flavor. 3

(Overall) A mildly boozy but overall fruity old ale with a lesser malt presence and sweetness than most Old ales are known for. Some slight sourness is to be expected, but even that reaches only a fraction of its potential. Despite some notable vinous characteristics, the hint of sourness doesn't really pull its own weight either, and what is left is seemingly some unfocused doughy wine-beer experiment. I would have preferred something that went all-in towards a particular goal and pushed the distractions aside. This beer in particular seems to be all over the place without any particular winning direction in mind. 3.25

A: single finger head on hazy deep amber and copper body. Very nice lacing.

S: sweet caramel malt. Pretty simple. Some cherry and citrus fruitiness.

T: strawberry and cherry dark fruit sweetness. Caramel malts and nut notes. A touch of toffee.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: Not too bad. I was worried it would be boozier which it wasnt.

My 100th review! Enjoyed with EgadBananas, cvm4 and our significant drinkers on my birthday at the Barley Oak.

So I asked Egad what he was drinking and he said Red Brick Old Stock. Since this guy is a beer guru, I tried a sip and was sold.

Appearance: hazy, copper-colored with a tan, half finger head that quickly heads back to Atlanta. Decent lacing.

Smell: bourbon, caramel and some spice (cayenne perhaps)

Taste: A cherry sweetness comes through with other dark fruits and malty goodness. Alcohol pops in for a mellow effect. Man, this is good.

Mouthfeel: medium; very frothy. Low carbonation

Overall: A damn fine brew. One of Red Brick's best. I've really become an Old Ale fan. This is a fireside sipper. A beer to grow older to.

7.9% eh? That seems a bit low... No matter.

On tap @ Barley Oak.

Pours a tawny coppery color, hazy, with a cream/yellow colored finger of head. Aroma was earthy, with a pronounced malt sweetness and dark fruits. Slight caramel. A bit more earthy spice notes on the taste, with those medium/dark fruitiness and malty caramel. No real booze notes on either the aroma or taste, so maybe this is a milder Old Ale. It's creamy and upper medium bodied. Slight carbonation.

Not amazingly stylized, but it's still tasty and drinkable.

Into a snifter:

A: brown/slightly dark orange body around the sides of the glass with a three finger foamy off-white head that rises and falls fairly quickly, clingy spider web lacing graces the sides

S: booze, cherry and vanilla, and just a little bit of oak coming through as the beer warms

T: sweet and tart through previously mentioned flavors, slight lingering graininess, a bit of toffee comes out as the beer warms, tart aftertaste and a dry finish

M: medium, semi-sessionable, adequately carbonated

O: well, I'm not an old ale expert or fan, but it just seemed a bit tart than other old ales I've had, would I have this again, hmmm .... unsure because I'd say this is a bit different than other old ales

There is something off with this beer in that it tastes like a Flanders ale. That woody, fruity, cherry thing. It's definitely not old ale, to me. Just too fruity and tangy. I mean I still do like the flavor profile and it's a nice beer for sure. But an old ale it is not. Maybe this got infected? Regardless, just do the same thing again and call it a Flanders red ale and you've got a winner! Problem solved.

A - Pours with two fingers of off-white foam on top of a hazy, dark amber-brown body. The head fades away slowly and leaves nice lace on the glass.

S - Some slightly dark fruit with notes of cherry and vanilla as well as a touch of toasted oak.

T - Thick, sweet malt up front. Some caramel and tartness in the middle with a finish of toffee, light herbal hops, and lingering grainy sweetness.

M - A thick body, moderately high carbonation, and a sweet finish.

D - I was afraid that this was going to be infected, based on previous experiences with Red Brick products, but that doesn't seem to be an issue. Unfortunately, while it isn't infected, it is kind of bland and flabby. The malt is one dimensional and there really isn't much else going on. A little age might help.

12 oz bottle served in a snifter.

Pours a cloudy orange-brown with more than 1 finger of thick tan head. The head is durable, but turns a less appealing chunky with reduction.

Has the aroma of an oak-aged sour ale with a good bit of malt and a hint of spruce. Higher ABV becomes more evident with warming.

T: Plenty of oak flavoring; really too much of it for my tastes and too much given the strength of the other flavor components. Those other components include a bit of prune and over-ripe dark fruit, yeast, and a hint of charcoal. Starts sweet but ends sour. Both sour and bitter components linger on in the aftertaste.

M: Medium-full body; good carbonation; creamy smooth.

O: I approached this with trepidation, having opened a bottle just a few days earlier that I suspected had gone bad. It was a drain pour. This was much better but still a little challenging, in part due to the resemblance to the spoiled bottle. Eventually, it proved to be interesting and near enjoyable, if a bit too sour for my taste.

Poured into a chalice. Pours deep clear caramel brown with a thin biege head that dissipates quickly. Some tiny bubbles can be seen streaming from the bottom of the glass. Sweet malts and cherries are forward in the aroma. It has a nice toffee smell to it as well. The taste is of sweet and bread malt, toffee, cherries, and some nuttiness as well. The flavors are well balanced and the alcohol is barely detectable in the taste. The body is medium to full with moderate carbonation. The beer is smooth and coats the mouth well. This lends itself to sipping well, but could also be easily gulped. Overall, this is a very good and well balanced old ale.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into an imperial pint.

This beer pour out a hazy red-brown with a finger of head that retains and laces well. The aroma is sweet, malty, and very heavy on dark fruits. There's an apparent alcohol twang here as well. The taste doesn't stray from the aroma at all. Sweet malts, lots of dark fruits, a bit of alcohol. The finish does have a nice bit of tartness that helps round out the sweetness assault. The mouthfeel is thick and nicely carbonated, and the drinkability is average for the style. Overall, it's a good old ale. Nothing outstanding, but it's not a bad buy.

Poured into a Dogfish signature snifter. No freshness date.

A- Pours a reddish brown color with a 1/2 inch light tan head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a good amount of surface foam. Lacing tries, but doesn't hold up much.

S- Booze fume that's slightly off-putting with faint sweet malts in the back.

T- The booze is more toned down in the flavor which allows the toasty malts to make their way to the front and be known. Still pretty sweet and even has a vegetable vibe going on which is kind of odd but somehow works in the scheme of things. Some hop bitterness lingers in the aftertaste.

M- Quite smooth considering the high amount of ingredients. Very little burn, very little bitterness (all things considered) and not too heavy. This is actually where the beer really shines. Medium carbonation.

O- Not amazing, but not too shabby either. My first try by this brewery and I'm quite satisfied.

Purchased from Total Wine Tampa for $2.79

App- A murky mix of orange and amber yellows and browns. A small one finger head with some good cling as well.

Smell- Lush citrus with some caramel malty undertones. Some whispy booze notes as well.

Taste- Nice blended mix of malty and sweet. This one is an old ale with a certain flavor I can't put my finger on. Creme fraisch? Walnuts? It's something but just stumped.

Mouth- A very low/medium body with a medium carbonation. Creamy, lush and a tad nutty on the finish.

Drink- Enjoyable, creamy and layered with sweetness. It was a tad different from what I was hoping for but shouldve bought one more.

Poured a slight hazy Pumpkin orange. Aroma was mildly roasty with small hints of bourbon and a touch of vanilla. Flavors were very woody and dry with a touch of Alcohol. Lingering bitter finish, lots of wood/earthiness. Mouth feel was pleasantly full with light carbonation. There was a thin layer of foam on top, that lasted the whole glass, it made it creamy with every sip. Not bad, I would like to find more from this brewery.

Strong aroma has a malty core and a firm fruity, almost brandy-like overtone. It pours a clear, dark mahogany with a fluffy, pale tan head. Malty, fruity aroma has a brandy-ish tang and a hint of caramel. Strong-bodied texture is lively and fizzy, leaving a nice fruity tingle and an apple brandy nip.

Serving: Bottle into an ale glass.

A: Slightly cloudy amber with about an eighth inch of head which dissipated fast. A lot of carbonation is visible. Lacing is okay.

S: Not a lot of smell here, but I detect caramel and hints of vanilla.

T: Very malty. Hints of the caramel and vanilla that I smelled earlier. Has a toasted bread character as well. Not bad.

M: Solid and thick feel on the mouth. Very nice.

O: Solid old ale offering. Definitely do not regret the purchase.

Pours a slightly turgid dark amber with a somewhat slight head. Smells firm, not too sweet, somewhat woody, and with a nice dry licorice note in the background. Much better than the Heavy Seas Plank 1 old ale that I just had. The taste also has a pleasant woodiness with some nice barrel notes- tastes more like a touch of brandy than bourbon notes- still fairly slight, more residual than if the wood had been soaked recently, but nice. There is some firm malt, some dry bitterness, and some dark dried fruit. Smooth, but with just enough of a bite. Very nice. I continue to be impressed with the Brick Mason series- keep them coming!

taste: bready and sweet, nice balance of caramel and hops. this is very drinkable and well executed english old ale.

I've actually liked Red Brick's other offerings, but here they have made a style that I just don't get along with. It's almost all malt. The red appearance takes a hard pour to generate head and lace, but it does stick around when pushed. The smell is nonexistent til it warms, and then features some darker citrus, some alcohol, and caramel.

It drinks medium to full body, which is nice, but the taste component is just bland. There's sweetness, and I got some figs and plum, but I could be imagining things. Mostly, it's just... there.

It's malt. Malty malt malt. And while it seems balanced even despite the somewhat cloying finish, it also seems like something I would forget about it as soon as this review is posted.

A: Pours hazy amber/brown with a finger of fairly dense white head. Average retention with decent lacing.

S: Not a lot. Slight caramel sweetness with small amount of citrus hops.

T: Stronger favors than the aroma suggests, but similar in profile. Caramel sweetness starts off with a good amount of bitter and citrus hops. Not much alcohol burn at all. Quite smooth, but easily forgettable.

M: Light for the style with good carbonation.

O: Uninteresting, but not flawed.

Pours a clear, eventually cloudy, brown-amber, really pretty color, with a tightly packed lather an inch high and a beautiful shade of beige. Thick looking for sure.

Sweet grains and caramel malt goodness, light hints of a darker roast, subtle shades of the bitter hops, hints of vanilla, sweet. low/med. strength fragrance.

Clean sweet is the operative aspect here, it starts with the merest hint of bitter to lead the sweet parade, a spicy herbal ghost of bitter, but caramel and candi jump the play. Some ripe fruit enters, hinted at especially by a juiciness to this, subtle floral hints tease the tongue along the way. I get pear, and light peach in it. Finally end of sip is a marvel of just the whisper of bitter trying to dry a cavalcade of fruity sweetness. Clean taste makes this beer, which could have been a cloying mess, is anything but. No alcohol flavors.

Very viscous, yet light on the palate with clean flavors, low carb.. Juicy finish. Clean and lasting cling

This one snuck up on me, wasn't ready for a Red Brick beer to impress me, this one is. Nicely done. Get y'all some.

Got this in a box this evening a quick chill and it was ready to go. Thanks Corey for sending this one my way.

A – Slight haze, brownish with an orange hue. Nice 2 finger tan colored head that lingered for quite a while.

S – Got alcohol up front. Some caramel sweetness and small hints of oak are present.

T – Sweet malt / caramel are up front and dominate then some alcohol mixed with the oak on the back end.

M – A warm burn of alcohol, medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O – Nothing fancy a good sipper that after warming up slightly was pretty decent.

12 ounce bottle - $2.99 at Olde Crabapple Bottle Shoppe in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a hazy, not quite murky, brown-amber body with a frothy, off-white head.

Smell: Lowly sweetish nose of toasted, caramelly malts, with a touch of toasted, tannic oak staves and freshly zested orange peel that, with the alcohol, presents a far-off sniff of orange brandy.

Taste: Again, toast and caramel though not too terribly bold and never, at any point, is it overtly sweet (or even near sweet). Also, a hint of unsweetened chocolate powder. Fruitiness of plums, plum skins, and bitter oranges. Simple, sweaty tannic oak character from the barrels. Drying, warming, slightly unclean finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: I had anticipated RBOS as just being a straightforward old ale without the barrels and the various spice additions, and, in retrospect, I think I would have preferred just that.

A new offering to the area from Red Brick...

Well this definitely looks the part of an old ale... Very murky and not much carbonation to it... Very still in the goblet...

Lots of oakiness coming through in the aromas... Slightly sweet aromas of the caramel malts used present also... Not quite as much fruit as I was hoping for... Fairly subdued overall...

Loads of the oak flavors seemingly dominate the caramel malts and brown sugar that attempt to bust through... Sort of tastes like it smells... Very subdued with the booze busting through in the end... Perhaps the slightest of hop presence?

This seems a little...lacking? It's not bad but I was hoping for something a little richer and fuller here... The oak sort of drowned everything else out and muddled things up for me quite a bit...

A: nice mahogany color with a decent white head. little bits of lacing

S: smells is real light but has a nice caramel malt thats expected.

T: there is actually a decent amount of bitterness to this. overall it is quite lite compared to other old stocks I have but the flavor still fits the style just a little less bright. the caramel background is there but it may be a little fresh with the hops like i mentioned before.

M: perfect amount of carbonation

O: overall just seemed a little lacking in flavor and umph. the flavor that IS there makes it a easy drinking malty beer that is perfect for when youre looking for a change of pace between IPAs and stouts.
