Across the board, this is one of the most solid porters I've had, albeit not the most straightforward.

A: This beer is more black than my soul. Viscous, but not motor oil status. Nice taupe head with good retention and sticky lacing.

S: Smell is of cocoa and buttery richness with a slight hint of Maduro leaf.

T: Oatrageously smoky, rich and delicious. The chocolate flavor is more of an aromatic than an actual taste, but it has a nice impact nonetheless. The bitter hop melds with the chocolate; the result is a great balance of complementing and contrasting elements.

M: Silky and yet well-carbonated. Thick enough to carry the roasted character, effervescent enough to showcase a mildly bitter hop.

D: This is on-tap at the tavern down the street. Every time I go there, I try to order something else, but I always end up drinking a few of these. So it is eminently drinkable.

"Weep for your Northern brethren: Long winters, suspect college football, and perhaps worst of all, no Red Brick Beer. Since 1993 we've been brewing fine craft beers for the South, and only the south. We're proud to stand alongside gaits, hound dogs and mama as embodiments of the southern lifestyle. We're proud to be beer from around here." Brewed in the style of an American Porter, the brewery has been uncertain as to whether this is a winter seasonal or a year round. Either way, as this is one of their most popular releases, you can catch this in $6.99 4 packs around town, one of the best beer deals one can get for their beer money in Atlanta. Bottle date is 04/12/12.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to my Brick Mason snifter. Served north of 47º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Yields an explosive light brown crowning head of a frothy cream consistency, retains very well, sticking around for some time and thickening without hardly settling as significant time passes. Body color is a very dark mahogany brown with ruby highlights. Carbonation is very plentiful and aggressive from what I can see. It's a solid standard as far as my expectations go for appearances in an American Porter, as both the head quality and body tones are deep and appealing with no steep in quality. 4.75

(Smell) Aroma goes for light and drinkable but manages some substantial depth. Notes of bakers chocolate, bready oatmeal and medium roasted barley are most present with a moderate sweetness. A mild bitter baking chocolate note and some faint char provide a decent hop bitterness substitution, although it's a notch shy of where it should be. Despite some minimal yeast characters, this smells to be a clean, approachable and enjoyable beer. Potency is medium. Very pleasant aroma. 3.75

(Taste) Reminiscent of an Oatmeal stout; up front there is a semi-sweet milky chocolate and plentiful doughy oatmeal malt base with a mildly roasty and toasted black malt and cocoa powder character that aids in a little bit of subtle balance, still a notch short in bitterness but the age might have something to do with reducing that balance. Little to no hop presence is notable. While being naturally sweet and flavorful this beer doesn't overwhelm the palate. It's very drinkable and enjoyable. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Medium+ thickness and a bit chewy from that oatmeal with a mildly bitter finish, not from hop presence but rather a faint sourdough black malt note. Alcohol presence is surprisingly very well-concealed for a higher gravity Porter. Carbonation makes it creamy, a very good pairing for the style. Body is above medium for an American Porter, medium/heavy overall. Texture-wise, I find this much more reminiscent of a highly drinkable Oatmeal Stout, very creamy and roasty with a residual sweetness and fluffiness that makes it quite enjoyable and highly drinkable. 4.5

(Overall) I haven't seen a beer that looks this decent in quite a long time, and the taste was pretty impressive for an otherwise so-so brewery. This is certainly deserving of a bit more recognition than it has so far earned, my choice pick of all year rounds by the brewery and one of Atlanta's hidden gem beers. 4

12oz bottle from Bullock's (Woodstock, GA). 7.99/ 4 pack. Bottled 10/12. Served in a Red Brick snifter.

Pours ruddy dark brown with about a half finger pale tan head. Small patches of lace.

Smells of cocoa, roast malts and sugar.

Bitter bakers cocoa kicks off the flavors followed by medium roast coffee, faded burnt caramel, toffee, a hint of smoke, a little hay and just a trace of grassy hops.

Medium light body with fairly sharp carbonation. Long dry bittersweet cocoa finish that just sits on the tongue.

A solid porter but nothing here to help it stand out in a crowd of offerings other than the fact that it's local, pretty cheap and easy to find in season. If it were fuller or more bold I'd rate it higher.

This beer pours up a deep deep mahogany with a nice one finger taupe head, not much retention and some nice lacing. Smell is sweet malt and chocolate, kind of subtle, but very nice. Taste is caramel, toffee, coffee, chocolate, and mild hops. Mouthfeel is fairly thick with a nice coffee aftertaste. As porters go, this one is fairly mild, but it is very drinkable.

A: thin head on a deep brown body.

S: oak, caramel malt and earthy hops.

T: nice smokey and mold mesquite note late in the finish. This is what a porter should taste like. Some intermixed roasted malt and earthy hops.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: closer to a brown than a porter but the mesquite and smokey notes are excellent

Red Brick Porter consumed at the Local Gastro Pub in Memphis.

Poured from a bottle into a thistle glass, the beer is dark brown with a thick tan head.

It has an aroma of charred malts, something sweet and just a whiff of wood smoke.

The taste is sweet with heavily roasted malts, a bit of dark chocolate then something slightly medicinal in the finish. Unfortunately that Band-Aid/medicinal thing dominated the taste the last 1/3rd of a beer.

The mouth could be beefed-up a bit for a bigger beer.

The beer started great but really faded at the finish.
