rich tan colored head that reached a height of at least two inches before settling down to a respectable inch of head that did not go away. Lots of chocolate and coffee leading the way here. Hints of molasses as well. Huge flavor here, maybe the best tasting porter I have come across. Lots of cocoa and chocolate, rich, huge flavor with a smooth creaminess that was second to none in my eyes. Really fantastic balance here as the chocolate really starts to come out as it warms. Lots of flavor here with a ton of mellow notes that were just all over the place. Nice tight, dry finish

Poured from a bottle:

A: Dark beer, thinnish consistency, and an off white head that didn't stay up too long, and ran down to some decent lacing on the glass.

S: Chocolate, malts, coffee mostly. That burnt roasty smell lingered in there too.

T: More coffee, not as much chocolate as I thought. Clean finish as everything goes away and ready for another sip. Smooth beer, not very complex.

M: Light, slight carbonation to it. Silky finish and clean. I like it, easy to drink.

Overall- I like it. It's a simple beer, clean flavors, not a ton going on, good carbonation to it. I could drink a few in a sitting and enjoy them.

Served in Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Not much head forms on the pour, which reveals a dark brown brew with a deep translucence that borders on, but does not achieve, opaqueness. A firm whiff brings large quantities of roast, of chocolate, and even a decent amount of alcohol, with coffee notes sticking their heads in from the wings. A taste confirms these olfactory rumors, with the coffee and oats dancing amidst a sea of chocolatey goodness. A heavily medium body coupled with a divine smoothness allows the tastes to comfortably envelope the tongue. Though the somewhat high and evident alcohol may dissuade some from continuous enjoyment, others will welcome this delightfully dark concoction as a constant companion.

poured into a pint glass. paid $5 for a 4 pack on sale.

appearance: poured a thick off white head that didnt stick around too long. very dark, let some light through when backlit. decent lacing.

smell: smells wonderful. chocolate, coffee, and toffee, stick out the most. a faint smokiness lingering in the background.

taste: for a double chocolate oatmeal porter, the chocolate is pretty tame. i thought the chocolate would have been the highlight, but its actually more coffee than chocolate. not bad, but left me looking for more. short finish with chocolate and coffee lingering for about a minute.

mouthefeel: medium bodied, silky mouthfeel. carbonation is spot on.

drinkability: could probably drink 2-3 in a session. very smooth beer.

overall: it was an overall pleasurable experience. its not worth $10 though. luckily i got it on sale for $5 for a 4 pack. if i want a chocolate beer, im going to stick with left hand milk chocolate stout. dont get me wrong though, it is a pretty good beer. ill give it a 7.5/10 just a little better than average.

12 oz. brown bottle listing 7.7% abv.

Appearance: A very dark brown glass. It would be black accept for the light glow it has when backlit. No clarity, just a defuse glow. Holds it's finger of foam with pride, pretty tan and very tight knit. Laces the glass like a champ with tidemarks.

Smell: Dark bakers chocolate and roasted barley. A light earthiness more than any hop notes.

Taste: Starts very mild with a chocolaty sweetness and fades off to a very earthy, lightly burnt coffee finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium high carbonation but manages not to get too fizzy. Thick body and an slick oily finish.

Overall: The chocolate isn't overdone but contributes to the total package. A solid porter, traditional, fairly English as the earthy hops come through more than an American citric or pine. The oats give the silky feel, all in all, a well balanced beer.

Picked up in a 4 pack outside of Atlanta during a recent trip. I think it was $10 a 4 pack.

A- Typical porter dark look. Very nice lacing on the glass.

S- Once again, screams porter at me! Looks and smells pretty promising. Roasty char and chocolate smells.

T- It's pretty nice, a little bit charred tasting, kind of like chocolate that has been slightly burnt (but not really in a bad way). Pretty typical porter, I wish the chocolate had come out a little more, I mean let's face it, when you call something 'Double Chocolate' I kind of expect it to taste chocolatey.

M- Fairly highly carbonated. Could be a little thicker.

12 oz bottle at 48 degrees into a snifter.

A: It pours black but lets a little light through and has a finger of off-white head that holds and laces well.

S: Milk chocolate, light roastiness, and some oatmeal. There is not a whole lot going on.

T: More milk chocolate, caramel, and light roastiness.

M: The body is much lighter than I expected with average carbonation and a weak finish.

D: Tastewise, this is better than Terrapin Moo-Hoo Stout. If only they would make it thicker and stronger...

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Dark walnut brown color with a visible ruby tint, more obvious in the edges of the glass. A thick and creamy beige head forms and retains nicely. Nice sheets of lace.

Smell: Dark chocolate, roasted malt, oats, vanilla, and coffee beans.

Taste: Roasted malt backbone, with coffee and vanilla providing the support. Chocolate flavors meander throughout each sip. Roast coffee flavor steps it up as the sip progresses, and what I assume is some hop spiciness and bitterness. The finish is very lightly sweet and coffee bitter.

Mouthfeel: Overall the mouthfeel is solid. Quite creamy and smooth, although a touch grainy. The bitter quality of the taste dries out the tongue a little bit. Fuller than medium carbonation and a fuller than medium body. I was actually expecting more from a 7.7% porter, though.

Drinkability: I like the interaction of the chocolate and oats. Not overly complex, but well done and enjoyable. Worth revisiting.

Reviewed on 5/22/2010. Bottle thanks to HonusWagner. Pours a dark brown with a thick light tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, lactose, bitter chocolate. Flavor of sweet roasted malt, charred malt, and a hint of lactose. A pretty tasty porter, not as chocolatey as advertised though.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip.

A- I thought I must have gotten a bad batch, but after reading other reviews the overwhelming head must be a characteristic of the beer. A characteristic I'm not fond of. When I poured it the head took up 90% of the glass, and I poured slow. When I uncapped it it began to foam out. It took 10 minutes for the foam to die down enough for me to drink it. The foam reminded me of a root beer float. Thick tan creamy head. Too much. The color is dark brown coffee.

S- The bottle says robust, but the smell is faint. Slight chocolate and coffee tones. Do I smell dish soap? Maybe thats where all the suds came from.

T- Black licorice. To be called a "double chocolate" was overhype. There is a faint unsweetened cocoa flavor. An almost rotten taste. Vinegar. Old coffee undertones. Nothing complex. Bland and offensive.

M- Creamy with a boozy burn.

D- Not very. I'm not sure I can finish this. If you have the patience to wait for the foam to die down to a point you can actually drink it you won't be rewarded.

Thanks to Mike for this beer he included as an extra in our recent trade.

A: The pour is a dark brown color with some notes of red in the right light. The head fills up about 90% of the glass and takes several minutes to die down before I can drink the beer. I should have taken this as a warning, but I guess I'm not quite that intelligent.

S: The aroma of this beer is simply repulsive. Vinegar, ammonia, acetone, wood stain, rotten fruit, and garbage are among the descriptors I have decided are appropriate.

T: You'd think the appearance and aroma would have been enough to keep me from drinking any of this, but no...Again, I question my decision making skills. Alcohol, rotten cherries, spoiled chocolate, vinegar, and fruit punch (of all things) make up the flavor profile. Mmmmm.

M: The body, well, let's call it light to medium. The carbonation was simply excessive and if nothing else, did a good job of scouring my tongue.

D: Simply dreadful. Obviously infected, but this is easily one of the worst instances of a beer becoming infected that I've come across. Step your game up, Red Brick.

Poured into a tulip pint: Dark but translucent brown with deep ruby highlights under a massive (4-5 fingers), light brown, aggressively rising head with a consistency like souffle, glistening & lovely. Looks good, but I'd like to finish pouring my bottle, please. Head drops to about half a finger, but still retains well.

At first I got some strongly sweet cocoa & coffee smells, like frozen mocha with some chocolate syrup. These are soon accompanied by light hops & a milky quality (lactose?).

Chocolate syrup in flavor, followed by a restrained hoppy bitterness, a little citrus zest, & a moderate roast, like mild coffee. Aftertaste is dark chocolate & roast bitterness for a long while. A little heat shows up later in the game, but subtly.

Medium-full bodied (I really had to wade through the head at first), with a little bite from booze & hops. The roast lingers & really dries things out.

Interesting composition to this: it started off sweet & gained in bitterness & roast. Usually I find it the other way around, with a beer showing its more challenging components up front & mellowing out. A flavorful, inviting beer that's got a lot to offer. I bet this would be great on draft.

12oz. bottle into tulip on 8/25/10.

A - Really dark brown, about two shades away from black, but with some deep burgundy hues here and there, and a quarter inch creamy beige head that quickly reduced to a swirly patch and some snake-like lacing.

S - Tootsie Roll-esque chocolate aroma with licorice notes and a hint of toasted oats. Nose is sweet and malty overall with very little hop presence.

T - I get more of a light roasted coffee character rather than chocolate, although there is some chocolate sweetness present. A hint of licorice also appears in the backend. Finishes with a tinge of earthy, herbal hop bitterness.

M - Medium bodied with a slick texture and fairly bristly carbonation, although I find that the mouthfeel is a bit lacking overall. Finishes with a moderate lingering hop bitterness on the palate.

D - Pretty solid offering overall, although I was anticipating something a little more substantial and chewy. Still, this drank decently for an almost 8% ABV brew and the alcohol remained fairly restrained throughout.

Single bottle from ABC Liquors in Tampa.

Poured into a small ale glass. A dark brown brew, with a great deal of visible carbonation. Thin tan head, with some noticeable retention. Looks a great deal like coke.

Nose is malty with notes of coffee and bitter chocolate.

A pretty tasty porter, but the name really gave this brew expectations it couldn't live up to. A brew that boasts to be a "double chocolate oatmeal porter" should really be more robust. As it stands, it was merely a good porter, with notes of roasted malt and chocolate. Expected it to be a lot more like Young's, I suppose.

Thin, with spritzy carbonation.

Despite my disappointment, this was a tasty little brew, easy to drink. I just think the bar was set too high with the naming.

12 oz. A nice dark brown pour with an overly bubbly dark cream colored head. WAY overly bubbly.

Aroma is fairly roasty. Chocolate, peat accent.

Taste is a pleasant roasty malt and dark chocolate with cocoa. Finishes a bit dry cocoa and very light roast espresso.

Unfortunately it is a bit over-carbonated. Heavy light body, a tad thin and a tad watery. Alcohol well hidden, drinkability is good once you get around the carbonation.

EDIT: 2nd and 3rd bottles I had were not nearly as carbonated and it really seemed to even this out and thicken up the body. 4th bottle was very carbonated again, not sure what could be causing that.
