Pours a nearly brilliant golden/straw amber orange color, right down the middle for a perfect SRM on an IPA. Two fingers of white frothy head that has decent retention and provides for a very pretty lace all the way down. If any clearer it would be a perfect 5 for appearance.

Aroma is an upfront grapefruit and tropical to sour tropical that quickly melds with a solid caramel malt background to make for a perfectly balanced nose that is still very hop forward. There is a pine note as well but it seems to lack additional depth and it seems as though it hits a few distinct notes separately as opposed to blending individual notes together. With a bit more depth of character it would probably be perfect but you can't really fault it for lacking additional depth when the notes there are flawless.

The taste is very similar to the aroma in that it is grapefruit and pine forward and transitions to additional tropical fruit flavors including some mango before dropping off to a balanced malty finish. There is an appropriate amount of bitterness that hits near the end for a crisp finish but it doesn't overpower nor completely wipe away the malt finish. There is also quite a bit of alcohol warmth and boozey character that does detract from the actual malt and hop flavors that are there. In the end, when that combines with the malt and hop bitterness but no longer hoppy flavor it leaves a bit of an off taste at the very back end that just doesn't come together perfectly.

Mouthfeel is where this one loses me. For as much as it has going for it at the initial impression the boozy off taste finish leaves for a rather harsh after taste and finish. It is slightly over carbed in my opinion while seeming a touch thin for the over alcohol present which would generally leave me expecting a brew with a touch more body.

All in all this is a very good beer and great example of style but as with nearly every brew out there it has room for improvement. If the same aroma and appearance could be combined with a better body and reduced warmth to take less away from the hop and malt flavors you might just have something super special.

Man this is good! Just opened my first bottle and it's pretty fresh; bottled 5/09/13.I don't know if this is a good analogy but opening the bottle is like letting the Genie out the lamp. It's insanely floral and sweet just smelling from the tip of bottle. Kind of like opening a BRAND NEW canister of Folgers ground coffee in the morning.

In a glass, the beer presented a very light amber color. Very clear and transparent. Honestly, I am paying less attention to appearance and more attention to smell and flavor.

I taste a lot of floral notes, some kiwi, citrus, and pine. It's is amped up in flavor. It almost makes your tongue tingle! I have not tried that many Double IPA's but if there is one DIPA it compares to, it's Sosus from Toppling Goliath. I think both are equally good. But because Sosus is extremely limited (might have been made only once), I'm more than glad that Pliny is available!

The flavor is very balanced. It's both bitter and sweet. Neither side is overpowering. The beer is extremely drinkable. I'm savoring it but I can see why someone would say it doesn't take long to finish a pint. I'm very happy to be getting some more next month!

Well, thanks to a fantastic Cali BA, I've just had my first Pliny. Poured into a tulip, tall head, lingers a bit. It's hoppy and smooth. Very balanced and drinkable, doesn't overwhelm the palate. It's not the hop bomb I was expecting, for better or worse. Not the best or hoppy-est, but better than any other IIPA...except one...

Pliny is fantastic! However, it is no Heady Topper.
