Notes:
Pliny the Younger, the man, was Pliny the Elder’s nephew and adopted son. They lived nearly 2,000 years ago! Pliny the Elder is our Double IPA, so we felt it was fitting to name our Triple IPA after his son. It is almost a true Triple IPA with triple the amount of hops as a regular I.P.A. That said, it is extremely difficult, time and space consuming, and very expensive to make. And that is why we don’t make it more often! This beer is very full-bodied with tons of hop character in the nose and throughout. It is also deceptively well-balanced and smooth.

First pour into my glass at Boulder Strong Ale Festival at Avery Brewing
A- Golden, almost orange. not a lot of head.
S- Piney, strong citrus, and slight alcohol
T- Great Malt bill for the hops, i found the hops to be a bit astringent. A really unique flavor, I guess thats why its so popular, I have never had a beer that tasted like it. It was different, but I cant say I loved the flavor. A little Resinous.
M- a little syrupy, chewy. I tried to love it. tried to see what it was all about. found the mouthfeel average for a IIPA
O- I just don't get it, I guess. It was a great beer, like I sai, very unique, just not the best IIPA I have ever had.

Decided to fight the crowds & try me some Younger on tap at Local 44. $8 for a tulip glass. Nice white head delivered upon the pour. Crystal clear gold color. Amazing considering how much hops go into it. Smells of dank hop resin. Attractive lemon rind & notes of melon, mango, orange zest, and some vanilla. Tastes amazing. All the hop characters in the nose in the flavor. Nice firm bitterness. Not pungent or astringent. Dangerously drinkable. Alcohol doesn't seem noticeable except I can tell it's there since I haven't eaten lunch yet. (This is my lunch.). Dry tasting. I love this beer. So glad I decided to come out for it. Only reason I didn't score this a perfect score is due to the extremely limited availability.
This one lives up to its hype. Fantastic beer by Vinnie. He's my hero.

A: Beautiful, deep golden IPA appearance with a tiny strip of white head. Had it in a 5-ounce sampler at Capone's in Norristown, Pa.
S: pine, sweet malt, slight grapefruit, wonderful.
T: Had a chance to have this paired with the Elder. And while I've had and loved the Elder before, the Younger just blows it away. So much more complex.
M: Thick and oily, but so very nice. Just feels ... right
O: Lived up to the hype for me, and well worth an hour wait outside in the morning cold. The ABV is so amazingly hidden. You'd never know. But I can't really say anything negative. AMazing nose, really great mouthfeel, beautifully complex. So much going on. Blows your taste buds away. Can't wait to have it again.

A: viscous looking IPA with some small white head on top
S: pine, citrus, alcohol, and malt sweetness; this doesn't all mix well.
T: more of that odd mixture. The taste of all of these ingredients should be good, and is, but the mixture doesn't come together well enough to be the best DIPA out there.
M: thick even for the style, with decent but somewhat lacking carbonation.
O: misses the mark, though still excellent. I wonder if other batches or having this fresher would have made a difference (it's a month after the release and it just showed up in Philly). Reminds me of a Heady Topper, but doesn't strike the balance right. It's not dry enough, but at the same time there's too much alcohol. This beer just tried to be too big. For all of the negative things here, it's still on par with deliciousness like Simtra, but it's a step below Heady, and probably not as good as the Elder.

On tap at the Cheeky Monk into a tulip-style glass.
A-This brew looks like a IIPA, i.e., very little head and a clear brew with a orange-tinted, slightly off-pale coloring.
S-The smell is intense and complex. I detect citrus flavors ranging from grapefruit to orange to lemon. I also detect a honey and pepper. This brew is on the fruit forward end of things, but there is still a light whiff of dank pine and sage.
T-The taste is not a complete fruit bomb like the smell. I still get grapefruit and other citrus as dominant, but there is more chalky, earthy, oily, dank flavor from the hops that moves on the stage here. I also pick up a hint of caramel malt, which makes for a nice balance. The concentration of flavor and balance of hop and malt are impressive.
M-The feel is mildly slick and oily. The carbonation is low and the weight is medium bodied.
O-It is hard for a brew like this to live up to the hype, and I'm not sure it did, but this is a damn good beer. The impressive thing here is the balance of malt and hops (and ABV, which is nearly imperceptible) combined with such an intensely strong flavor. Other brews that strive for intensity come of as overly bitter or one-trick ponies, but this brew does a great job of drinking well at 11.0% while maintaining full flavor force.

Fortunate to be in Denver at the Cheeky Monk for a tapping.
Appearance: Clear, crisp orange hued. Akin to most kiler DIPAs/TIPAs
Smell: Citrusy sweet from 3 feet away
Taste: Enamel-busting sticky grapefuit
Mouthfeel: Suave suave suave.
Overalll: I was very impressed with this beer. I feel lucky to have had it. It most certainly lives up to the hype.

I'm a fan of Russian River, but for their sours, not for Pliny the Elder. As much as I enjoy the Elder, I felt that it was a bit undeserving of the hype. But I HAD to try the Younger, so we decided on a whim to drive from Sacramento to Santa Rosa on day 2 of the Younger's release. We got in line at 4:45, and were finally drinking the Younger around 9:45. They were out by 10:30. Apparently, some had waited seven or eight hours before us. Three weeks later, I managed to try it again in Sacramento at the Pour House. We got there forty minutes early and it sold out in twenty minutes.
The beer had a thin white head, with an instantly noticeable big splash of hop aromas, mostly intensely sweet but with some obvious pine as well. Medium carbonation, not intense or biting but not at all flat. The most obviously different part about the experience was how the flavor stays in your mouth for a couple of minutes after you have a sip. Incredibly sweet and pure like fruit in the middle of summertime. There's not really any bitterness, but hoppy, alpine-flavored dryness complements the sweet hop flavors perfectly. You can pick out the sweet and the piney notes individually. It really coats your mouth. No alcohol taste, but my stomach quickly warmed up. There's also a nice malty background that adds to the experience. When I had it again three weeks later, the only difference was that there was a much larger head that was very light, like foamy cotton candy. Best beer ever? I don't know, but it was definitely the best beer I've ever had, by a long shot.

Appearance – Nice golden color. Minimal head on my pour.
Smell – really impressive nose. Similar to the Elder, but smelled a little sweeter.
Taste – Huge hops are incredibly well balanced with a sweet malt. More balanced than the Elder. I can't believe this is over 10%
Mouthfeel – Perfect amount of carbonation. Medium body.
Overall – This lived up to the hype. on par with the Heady Topper for me.

Amazing beer. This year is better than 2012. Also incredible to taste this side by side with Pliny the Elder and seeing how much better it tastes given that Elder is a great beer as well.
Had it on tap at Russian River and at the City Beer Store in SF.

Serving Type: On-tap at Breakwater Brewery poured into a half pint glass.
Appearance: Golden amber in color with a pure white head and great lacing. The head was minimal but this could have been due to the fact that they had pre-poured a number of glasses in order to move the line as quickly as possible. Amazing lacing.
Smell: My first impression was that it was not as aromatic as I was expecting for a "Triple IPA." After really delving into the smell though, I was immediately impressed by the balance between citrus, fruit, and pine backed up by a pale malt scent. Usually, I find that one hop aroma dominates the nose but this beer was beautifully balanced in a way rarely seen.
Taste: As the first sip hit my mouth, it was as if a flavor bomb went off, immediately coating every surface it came into contact with. The balance of the smell transitioned beautifully into the taste as notes of citrus, fruit, pine, and earth (which I did not notice in the aroma). The hops were also in perfect balance with the malt sweetness and it finished with the cleanest, strongest bitter I have ever experienced.
Mouthfeel: Perfectly done. Medium body. Semi-sweet. Nice carbonation. No room for improvement.
Overall: This was just a fantastic experience overall. Although Breakwater Brewery was packed for a Thursday afternoon, there was no five hour wait. I only arrived an hour early and was able to scope out a spot to get one of the first pours. The beer was amazing and I hope to be lucky enough to enjoy it again next year.

First of all I just wanted to say I am not one of these guys who went to beer college and pretends to know anything about beer. I know what I like and I know that Russian River has a huge hype behind them...But its the real deal. Pliny the Younger has been on my radar for a long time and finally got a chance to get a taste this past weekend at Harrys Hofbrau. It did NOT disappoint. From the second I got the beer in my hand(4oz pour) I swirled it around in my glass for what seemed like 10 minutes smelling the hell out of it. I wanted to stick it up my nose and breathe it in forever...It was refreshing. Its definitely got a huge scent and taste of grape fruit. Super smooth, much more than the Elder but amazing. Well worth the wait in line and wish it wasnt so hard to get...But I see why it is. If this beer isnt on your bucket list revise that list today! Cheers

Smells strong but with a light citrus note, overall smells fantastic. Pours very light but golden with a very small hint of orange, relatively small head. Initial taste is dominated by bitterness but rounds out with a small amount of citrus, finishes pretty dry. Doesn't scorch your tongue with bitterness. Virtually no alcohol character which is impressive considering the %age. Overall it's the epitome of a triple IPA, a dominate hop bitterness flavor that is balanced nicely and allows you to drink more without any problem.

Tasted on February 16, 2013 (a 45oz. pour at Harry's Hofbrau in Redwood City):
A: A very light amber color and a small head(but it's only a 4 oz. pour).
S: Very hoppy right up front, lots and lots of citrus notes and some pine. A slight malty note in the end.
T: Lot's of hops and citrus notes in the beginning. Very piney half-way through and just the right amount of maltiness in the end.
M: Medium heaviness on the tongue, which switches to heavy after a few seconds. Can taste the hops for a long while after with a little maltiness to it.
O: A pretty damn good beer and nearly lives up to full expectations. Enjoyed the hops and pine thoroughly. Would love to have a full pour in the future.

An in depth review is not necessary. Attending a sometimes hectic tapping of this brew is worth it. Also: I see alot of people having the Elder immediately preceding the Younger. I suggest enjoying something light and easy drinking while waiting for your pour of the Younger. The pallate is able to taste the beer more intensely.

I could not drink Pliny the Younger without having the Elder right next to it. The major difference is the bite at the end and the mouthfeel. When you drink Pliny the Elder you get alot of hopps and pine from the front to the back of your mouth and when you drink the Younger you get a crisp strong pine with a hoppy flavor in the back of your mouth. With that being said, I don't think you would notice the difference if you were pounding and had them on separate occasions.
Appearance-Clear golden orange with a thin white head, darker than most IPA's.
Smell-Pinny hoppy scent, far from skunky but will give your nose a little pinch.
Taste-Like the scent the overpowering flavors are pine and hopps. This beer is extremely powerful but the the delicious flavors and crisp make it hard not enjoy.
Mouthfeel-Crisp and smooth the flavors dwell in the back your mouth, no bite at the tip of your tongue.
Overall I feel this is the top IPA followed by Heady Topper and Stones 12.21.12 Enjoy By.it's a heavy hitter when it comes to flavor and is perfectly balanced.

On tap at Russian River 1 week after release (Feb 8, 2013). This was a real treat to sit down and take my first sip after traveling from NH for this and SF beer week, etc. The weather, setting (love RR bewpub), and atmosphere were perfect. Having tried all of the top IPAs/DIPAS except this one, I had to confront the Younger.
I wasn't expecting to be blown away by this beer as I typically prefer DIPAs (TIPA) in the 8% abv range. I'm not a huge fan of Hopslam and other 10%+ DIPAs. This was better than I expected. I was quite impressed by the tropical fruit in the nose and taste for such a big beer. The booze is well hidden and the drinkability is off the charts (had 9 glasses over the week). Tropical fruit, pine, some booze, nice malt backing without being over the top. Delicious.
While this was not the best DIPA/TIPA I've ever had, and the setting and experience probably bumped it up a notch, it was an excellent beer. My expectations were exceeded. I do think this is a beer that is best enjoyed as close to release/fresh as possible (all hoppy beers are of course, but perhaps some more than others) as I noticed a bit of decline/change in aroma/taste by my last glass a week after the first (probably palate fatique?). I hope to return next year.

Sometimes you just luck out. With a business trip to SFO for Feb 18th it looked like I was out of luck. Saturday night I was trying to make dinner reservations for Sunday night, but the restaurant was fully booked. So I went online to look up Rosmunde's and on the front page it said they were tapping their keg at 5pm on Sunday. Had to standby for an earlier flight on Sunday but arrived at 4:30pm with about 25 people in line. And the best part is that 30 minutes later there was no line for the 2nd.
Certainly worth the effort and I can see why it is rated so highly. Amazingly hoppy and a very clean taste.

Well, had to travel to Cali for it once and for all. First day tapping at RR on February 1st, 2013.
A - Purely clear, bright golden coloring. Very little head or remnants of foam, but curiously-decent lacing.
S - Dank, sappy, a tad phenolic, and plentiful grapefruit resin as expected. The sticky dankness of it is a bit surprising and definitely deviates from Elder.
T - Everything that anyone could expect from a landmark beer. Pine cone, of course, but moreso a balanced blending of grapefruit rind, cracker jack, citrus, and light herbs. It's a feat to make a recipe like this taste so utterly simple, yet that's exactly how it drinks.
M - Medium body, perfect carbonation, semi-smooth, lingering residual bitterness from the finish.
D - Easily the most drinkable of the gargantuan Triple IPA's I've experienced. That being said, Exponential Hoppiness reigns supreme for now. Worth the voyage? Probably not. But I don't regret it nonetheless.

I might be one of the few who at least from the 2013 batch of PTE think that it wasn't as good as other beers that I have had. The beer reminded me of a apple or cider after taste. It wasn't as hoppy as I personally would like and it's very smooth. Reminds me of a cross of Apple Cider and Chardonnay and an IPA.
I have heard that 2013 was different from previous years. I prefer Pliny the Younger. Glad I got to try it at Russian River Brewing.

Had at hollingsheads deli in orange. Big shot out to everyone at hollingsheads for putting on such a world class event.
A- bright golden orange with a frothy white one fingers head that hung out for a bit.
S- PINE!!! Omg this beer is like smelling a forest...orange, grapefruit, big pine, and a florally bready sweetness.
T- Same as smell. Big pine up front, followed up with those citrusy, tropical fruit notes, and then rounded out with that big bready sweetness. Actually the finish reminds me slightly of those kings Hawaiian rolls.
M- A very full bodied beer. So thick and full...dries the shit out of the palette right away.
O- What is there to say...it's Pliny the younger and it fully lived up to the hype as far as I'm concerned. Well worth waking up at 5:30 am for.
Interesting side note: got to taste the infamous PTY/westy 12 black and tan. Like putting peanut butter and jelly together...well worth trying if you have the means. Thanks for that one Rolando!

A--Pours a beautiful golden orange with a healthy head and impressive lacing. I drank it third in a flight of Blind Pig, Pliny the Elder, and Pliny the Younger, and it retained the head admirably while awaiting its turn (not very long, admittedly).
S--Strong piney hops, with lemon and grapefruit notes as well. No hint of the high alcohol.
T--What a delicious beer! Well worth the wait that universally accompanies a chance to drink it (unless you're sleeping with someone at Russian River, I suppose). As with the smell, there is strong piney hops upfront. As the beer warms, the pine recedes a bit and the citrus notes, especially bitter grapefruit, come out much more strongly. The bitterness of the hops is nicely balanced by a respectable maltiness, but this is clearly a very hop-forward beer. The alcohol adds some warmth, but I would not guess at the abv if I didn't know it ahead of time.
M--Strong carbonation makes this beer feel smooth and light. It is extremely drinkable despite the high abv and strong flavor. I could drink this all day in an alternate universe without drunkenness or a chronic PTY supply shortage.
O--I have been looking forward to this and drinking PTE for a long time. I think that I still slightly prefer I Hardcore You, but this is easily one of the best strong IPAs I have ever experienced. An almost perfect example of the style.

ranked one of the best beers in the world for a reason. this is one ive been dying to try for a long time and finally got the chance. followed the falling rock taphouse on twitter anxiously waiting the announcement and finally it came. tapping at 1pm, doors opening at 11am, I was in line by 9:30. had to play it safe. turned out to be a beautiful day of chatting and sharing beers with some great new friends. the beer itself was a joy, worth all the wait and anticipation. it came out in a tulip looking as radiant as a bar of gold, maybe with a slight orangey tint to it, and a couple fingers of pure white lacey head that leaves sticky tracks on the side of the glass as it sips. the nose is fabulous, rich in high alpha hop varietals mostly of the citrus persuasion. grapefruit rind, tangerine, and sweet lemon are apparent, and a bright ale yeast contributes some depth. it smells extraordinarily fresh and decadent, sure to be a treat. the taste is shocking. that first sip was just divine. I let it sit in my mouth for about a minute, just letting it soak in. huge floral and citrus hop notes. some bready body from the yeast, but holy cow the texture of this is what surprised me the most. its not sweet and viscous like so many American big IPAs. its light on the tongue and very clean in the finish. its bitter, but it isn't a blinder in that regard. its sweet, but it isn't sappy or sugary or thick. I think the mouthfeel allows for the flavors of this beer to develop perfectly, without making it unnecessarily weighty or sticky. that element was just so pleasing. when the waitress came around offering up seconds, I shot my hand into the air faster than ive done basically anything in the last ten years. the first sip of that one surprised me too, because it was cold again. I hadn't realized how much this beer opens up with temperature. the great blossoming. theres just so much hop going on here, very west coast, very very fresh. I am not sure from a brewing standpoint what makes this so special, and why other brewers cant offer stuff like this up on a year round bases. it has a similar hop profile to the stone enjoy by series, but trumps it by miles. the pliny the elder could easily be my every day drink, but so could this. it really doesn't seem as alcoholic as it is, totally masked. wow. I really appreciate the opportunity to enjoy this, and would like to thank the people of falling rock and the crew at my table for this event. what a beer, what a good time! cant wait for next year! worth they hype and then some!

What to say? This is the best beer I've ever tasted - and boy, have I tasted a few good ones.

Had to get to Toronado at 11:30 AM to try this beast.
The color is gold/straw with a long lasting, thick, white head. Unexpected for such a heavy brew. The lacing is super thick and dries onto the glass.
Pale malts are quickly overwhelmed by citrus, pine resin and beautiful floral hops. Only a hint of booze in the smell.
The taste starts with citrus and pine, lots of floral and grassy hops follow. Pale malts barely show up, alcohol is always present, but not overwhelming. Goes down too easy for having such a high alcohol content.
This is easily a hopheads wet dream. I can't say that I like it more than the Elder, but it certainly equals it while still bringing something new to the table! Find it, try it!

Had on draft at RRBC last Friday. Served on-draft and into a 10oz Nonic tumbler.
A- Light golden, but not quite straw colored, and commercial clear, which surprised me for the amount of hops used. (no hop haze) Very impressed with the clarity.
SM- So much going on on the nose. Tons of citrus fruit; lemon, and grapefruit mostly, followed by a resin and piney finish. Little to no malt character is picked up in the aroma.
T- Very good balance between the malts and hops, but the malt flavors are the first to come through. Very light sweet, followed by a long linger of hop flavor and bitterness on the back end of things. Definitely get tons of Centennial and Simcoe in there.
MF- Smooth, crisp and clean. As usual with Vinnie's IPA's...
OA- Was really hoping it would not be a let down, especially after a 2.5 hour drive and then 3.5 hours in line, and it was not. Very clean and refreshing mouthfeel, tons of hop bouquet on the nose with mixes of citrus and pine, and a great malt presence that hides the alcohol and balnces the bitter backbone very well. A must try!
