Found on the shelves of a Moscow grocery store, this brew comes in a tall brown 1/2 liter bottle with a thin neck and a red and black label featuring an excerpt from a painting by Dalip Kreyzin depicting a human body backlit by a very bright light, appearing to rejuvenate the body. Above the painting is the slogan: "Der erschaute Mensch" (loosely translated as "the visible man." Under the name is "for body, spirit and soul" in German. This beer is made by adding three extra ingredients to the brewery's Original Badebier: "Sole" (not sure what that is in English), algae and quersitine (the stuff in tonic water). Best before 6/28/06, I opened it on 11/13/05.
Pours clear but maple syrup dark under a two finger tan head that settle fairly quickly to think film, leaving only a few spots of lace. The film lingers long, however. The nose is mild, of caramel and some spice I can't place. Probably just my imagination, but it does smell a bit like tonic. The mouth is light and very prickly - oddly light for such a dark brew. I like the Badebier a lot, so was positively predisposed to this brew. The additives are definitely noticeable, adding a touch of saltiness and a bit of sweet lemon to the base beer's caramel malt. Hops appear to want to break through, but the salt keeps them subdued. The lasting impression is still of caramel. I can't say I'm crazy about it, but if it will stop me from aging...
