Sampled on tap at C'est What. Told the nice barkeep that I wanted something local, full flavored and interesting. She chose this as my first of the day. Poured dark brown, though clear, with a fluffy tan head. Great retention and lacing. Nutty malty aroma with some earthy hop highlights. Very inviting.
More malty than anything else, with the expected nutty malts taking center stage. There were a good bit of roastier malts in there, chocolate and some fruits. Very light earthy or herbal hops hanging way in the background.
Medium bodied with a tingly carbonation that washes away the malts. Very drinkable and hard to put down.

The first out of the OCB holiday mixer pack.
A - Pours a crystal clear brown colour, thumb of off-white head with some retention and sporadic lacing.
S - Scent is quite nice with musty caramel, toasted almonds, hints of maple and burnt sugar.
T - Again quite nice offering up a heavy nut flavour with the toasted almonds and a solid caramel and burnt sugar malt backbone. A leafy green hop flavour lingers amongst a touch of espresso.
M - Medium bodied, smooth and creamy and finishes surprisingly wet.
O - A solid brown ale that fits the style to a T. Nothing over the top, but definitely flavourful. Well worth seeking out.

Bottle from the OCB giftpack, 341ml into a tulip. Having had this numerous times, curious as to why it's taken me so long to review this.
Mahogany brown, with some chestnut highlights. Filtered as all Black Oak beers are, a cream coloured head of a finger and change sits atop. Good head retention, solid lace. Substantially nutty and toasty with some light fruit esters in the nose. Maybe a hint of chocolate. Simple and pleasant. Taste follows, more toasty malt notes, grains, hint of nuts and dark bread. Generally low carbonation, smooth feel. Probably the best beer in Black Oak's year round line-up, barring 10BY.

Appearance: It has a nice clear brown/ruby color to it. It has a nice off white head that dies down moderately and leaves nice lacing all the way through.
Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of dark fruit, some definite cherry, nuts, roasted malts, and some caramel.
Taste: Like the aromas, it has a nice upfront nutty character to it, dark fruits and malts, a bit of chocolate and some light hops in the back.
Mouthfeel: It has a medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.
Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with good flavors and aromas.

341ml Bottle
Appearance – Clear brown colour with an average size fizzy beige coloured head. There is a below average amount of carbonation visible and there is a good amount of lacing. The head lasted for around 6 minutes before it was gone.
Smell - Malts, chocolate, herbal notes, hops
Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, nuts, and chocolate. There is also a grassy/herbal flavour and some light hops. It ends with a chocolatey malty aftertaste.
Overall – One of the best beers within it's style that I've tried so far. It had a lot of great flavour but it isn't cloying in any way. I'll be happy to buy this one again and will keep my eyes peeled to find it on tap.

341 mL bottle from this season's OCB sampler, served a bit warmer than fridge temperature.
Pours a clear, deep brown-bronze colour, with a decent-sized finger of frothy, off-white head seated on the surface. Decent retention; it takes a few minutes to seep away, leaving a creamy coating on the surface and respectable quantities of lacing on the sides of the glass. Good aroma; heavy on the toasted malts, a little nutty with a healthy dose of molasses and bittersweet chocolate. Some leafy, herbal hop notes but for the most part its just malts on the nose.
This is a tasty brown ale. Once again the dominant flavour is roasted malts; nutty in nature and a little biscuity with hints of almonds. Molasses, brown sugar and more bittersweet chocolate are also prominent with a few notes of dark fruit. Herbal hop dryness mingles with roasted malts and a vaguely coffee-grind-like bitterness in the finish, lingering for a short while on the palate. Perfect balance between sweet and bitter. Kind of thin-bodied, maybe pushing medium, with a bit too much carbonation for my liking. Leaves a slick feeling on the tongue afterward.
I was in the mood for a brown ale tonight and this one really hit the spot. Easily one of the better browns available in Ontario; highly sessionable and smooth with a thoroughly enjoyable, balanced flavour. A bit more body would put this into must-try territory. If you like brown ales, this is a very safe choice that comes highly recommended.

Poured a one finger head into a pint glass, little retention or lacing on this ruby brown brew
Malt, molasses, floral hops with dark bread
Taste follows the nose on this well balanced brew
with some dark fruit
Light bodied for the style, smooth, dry with some carbonation, this is a crisp sessionable brew that is lightly bitter - I will pick this up again sometime soon

Pours a deep, rusty brown colour with ruby tones. A moderately-sized light tan-coloured head gets retained as a collar and film while leaving some spotty lacing.
Strong nutty aroma, like hazelnut or walnut with a ripened cherry-like fruit tone backing it up. Fresh grains and dark malts poke through as it warms.
Tastes of thick, slightly sweet dark malts at first with a nicely-balanced crispness. Thick, oily nuts and dark chocolate come through in the finish.
Medium-bodied with a mild but noticeable carbonation on the tongue. Goes down creamy thanks to the long-lasting collar and has a nice, bitter tartness to the aftertaste.
For me, this is an excellent example of an English Brown Ale. It has a robust aroma and is very drinkable, particularly with a meal that involves red meat.

Last of a sixer picked up at my local booze emporium.
Poured into a nonic. Ruby chestnut, a large off-white head. Great retention, patches of lacing cling to the upper reaches of the glass.
Nose is malt, caramel, biscuit, roasted something-or-other (hazelnut?), hops, and a nice smoky aroma.
Tastes smooth and about what I've come to expect from Black Oak. A solid brown ale, flavorful, with a big malty, chocolate and caramel opening, and a dry, lightly hopped finish. Reminds me a great deal of StoneHammer Dark, which is a good thing.
Medium-light bodied, moderate to low carbonation. Very easy to drink. Dry, bitter sensation remains on the tongue.
Just what the doctor ordered: a readily-available Ontario brown ale, well-made and decently priced for a sixpack. Nothing pretentious about this beer: just a solid, easy to drink ale, perfect for a fall evening.

Undated bottle, poured into a beer glass, received in trade via TheSevenDuffs
Pours an amber red, with a touch of a brownish hue about it. Too nice for my liking, but saved by globs of lacing and a bit of mocha-white head that retains forever. The nose of the beer is dominated by biscuit malt, along with a caramel sweetness, but I love biscuit malt so all is well...
The body itself is dominated by biscuit, but not overly so with hints of coffee playing into it. It is a bit thin with solid carbonation. An easy drinker, but I was hoping for a bit more dark roasts in here to play with the biscuit malt / nuttiness aspect of the beer.

Poured in to Unibroue tulip glass
A - Dark brown colour with one finger of thick, foamy cream coloured head.
S - Toasted pine nuts, hazelnut, some roasted malts and a slight coffee and chocolate nose. There is also a nice light sweetness in the background.
T - A nice palate of roasted malt, toasted nuts, sweet caramel and the faintest hint of coffee. A nice palate for a nut brown ale.
M - Light body but somewhat silky and smooth. Lightly carbonated.
D - my favourite nut brown ale and one of my regular go-to beers. An excellent beer!
