Had on tap at the brewpub, nice place, just sayin

Came to me almost black, its a really dark amber, little head, foam is a beige color, good lacing.

Very chocolatey in the nose, little bits of coffee and other roasted bitterness.

Taste is a little thin for my liking, chocolatey with a little bit of roasted bitterness and a metallic tinge on the finish.

Light in body, a little thin as I said earlier, super smooth though.

Overall, I really like this brew, would get it again, hopefully I'll be back in savannah soon

A: 1.5 finger head on a very dark with little light getting through body.

S: lots of coffee and chocolate malts. Some roasted malts and a little smokey.

T: nice coffee and espresso presence. Roasted Malta and dark chocolates round this one out.

M: smooth with medium to full body and light carbonation.

Overall: nice body for a porter. Not quite smokey enough but the coffee is just right.

Another fine beer from this place probably tied for the best beer of the day with me. Served in a pint glass, beer is black with a tan head, thin, moderate to low carbonation, some lacing.

Aroma is sweet and has a mild roast.

Beer is a little thinner than expected, strong through, nice roast flavors, finish isn't too dry, not too bitter either. The beer is relatively well balanced between the malt and the roast finish. I may have this again one day.

At Moon River. Nearly black pour, basicly no head, just a few white bubbles.

Aroma, toasted malt, caramel and some chocolates. Not a real strong nose.

Taste, more than the aroma. Still just a fair amount of roast but a little acrid. Slight sour note that I didn't care for. Some more chocolate and peat then coffee in the finish.

To the light side of mid, a tad thin really. Carbonation was fine despite what the appearance showed. Easy enough to drink.

Maybe this was an old barrel, didn't see what others did with this one. All in all very average, which is just fine, someone has to be.

From notes, Enjoyed September 3 at Savannah Craft Brew Fest '11.
L: Pours delicious brown-black with an ice cream float looking head. F--- yeh.

S: Toasty, smokey malts, subtle coffee and dark chocolate nose. I want one now.

T&M: NOICE. Similar to smell...subtle dark chocolate/ coffee notes, roasted and smokey malts. Slightly bitter. Go on with ya bad self Moon Riv. Easy drinking porter, far from thin, but polished off a few before noticing I was holding up the line.

O: A must try for fans of porters. This might have been my favorite dark beer from the Brew Fest. I live a state above and have never seen/heard of these guys/ this brew.

As with most beers here, it is served in a modified imperial pint type glass. The beer is jet black with just a skim of a tan head.

Nose of dark chocolate, roasted malts and something sweet like molasses.

The taste is roasty, with charred malts and a bit of baker's chocolate. Slightly bitter from the roast but not a hop based bitterness.

The mouth is slightly thin. It was drinkable but in the end not that memorable.

On-tap at the brewery on 2/22/11. Poured into a Pint Glass.

A - Dark black with a creamy, khaki-colored head. Nice retention, leaves some sticky lacing.
S - Dark roasted malt, coffee, cocoa powder, and toasted nuts. Very nice, yet typical, Porter aromas.
T - Nice, roasty flavors of dark malt, coffee, and chocolate, with a slightly smoky quality. Excellent Porter.
M - Creamy with a medium-full body and moderate carbonation.
D - Very drinkable, and somewhat sessionable at around 6% ABV.

My, my, my...to my palate, this is the best porter I've ever had. Understand, I'm talking about MY palate...if you like really sweet porters and lots of coffee flavor, this is not your porter. But it has huge chocolate notes, with just enough sweetness. Very, very nice.

Poured on tap into a tall BMB mug.

A - Very dark. Black, really. THICK, brown foam, a good two fingers, and left lots of lacing. Really a beautiful beer.

S - It had nice chocolate malt, and some roasted malts, with an underlying dark grain. Hint of the hops, but understated, as I would expect from a porter. This is really an unforgettable aroma.

T - Wow, wow, wow. This tastes so darned good. I am not a bit fan of sweet porters, but this really is something special. Tons of dark chocolate, strong grain bed, roasted malt, and caramel and molasses, balanced with solid hops bitterness that compliments the chocolate perfectly. Not at all cloying. This is a porter that I could have more than once in the same night.

M - Medium to full body, with light carbonation, just enough to give a little tickle on the tongue. Very smooth.

D - This is about as good as a porter gets, in my opinion. Something I can drink and feel very satisfied after one, yet if I have time, I can drink a second without any problem. I think it would pair beautifully with beef, but it went really well with the grilled chicken, swiss and bacon sandwich I had with it. Truly and outstanding brew.

Hand pumped from firkin. This is special because they dry hopped with Glacier hops.

A: Very dark, lighting isn't great in here but from what I can tell it's pitch black. Huge foamy head, cascading effect when it came to the table. Tons of lacing on the glass.

S: Citrucy, sweet floral, grassy noted from the hops. Dark chocolate and coffee noted from the hops. Less hop aroma and more chocolate as the beer warms.

T: slightly bitter, mild astringency from the malt. Slight taste of coffee. Toffee notes as the beer begins to warm.

M: Mild carbonation. Slightly creamy mouthfeel.

Overall an enjoyable beer.

On-tap at Hotoberfest - sampled multiple times.

Pours one shade from black with a half-finger tan head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of robust roasted malts with hints of semi-sweet chocolate. Also present are faint amounts of char.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Moderately dry roasted malt flavors kick things off and are soon dried out even further with hints of char. Midway through the sip the flavor profile sweetens a bit with the addition of semi-sweet chocolate which carries through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass quickly and could have another with no problems.

Overall there weren't a lot of bells or whistles on this beer but it was solid and clean. Worth a shot.

Had on tap at Moon River Brewing Co. Served in a pint glass.

A: Pours a deep brown with hints of ruby once you reach the bottom of the glass. The head is cola-colored and disappears pretty quickly. Nice and oily with no sign of bubbles.

S: Just like the menu describes it, this smells like melted dark chocolate. The aroma is heavy on the dark malt, with charred wood toning down the bittersweet cocoa notes.

T: I could have this for dessert and be satisfied. The chocolate is still the most apparent note, which is surprising because of the strong roasted nose. The roasted malts lend a nice bitter counterpoint. I didn't taste very much in the way of hops.

M: Very smooth and clean, but also very heavy on the palate. This is definitely a meal in a glass. It has a nice oily texture and minimal carbonation. You can swirl the glass at any point and get almost no head formation.

D: Very, very good. This is one of the best porters I've had, simply because it's not as harsh as others can be. It's a formidable beer in it's own right, but very easy and clean to drink.

I stopped into Moon River with a friend that lives in Beaufort, SC to grab a couple of beers. This beer was black in color and very still in the glass. No real head to speak of. The nose is dominated by the malt. The attack and flavor are very smooth. The mouthfeel is smooth as well. The flavor has hints of cocoa, but is pretty clean at the start and finish. I really enjoyed this beer the most of those that I tried. I wish we would have gotten something to eat so I could hang out more as the place looks pretty decent.
