When I first saw the beer selection here, I was impressed at the quality of the beer they had, and I thought this might be as good a beer store as the Whole Foods in Los Altos. However, the beer only took up about 1/2 the length of the cooler in the isle, rather than the entire length, as it does in Los Altos, and they were missing some of the really good beers I saw in Los Altos.
All of their beer is kept refrigerated, with the exception of a handful of "specials" they have on the floor.
There are plenty of good beers here, and it's a good beer store. But it'd be even nicer if they used more of their cooler space to stock up on even more great beer. I believe Draeger's in San Mateo has a better selection if you're shopping for beer in San Mateo.

I came here because I had heard of the generally good beer selection at Whole Foods Markets.
I guess this is one of the exceptions. They had a few Belgians that I may or may not have seen elsewhere, a few Sierra Nevada selections, some Stone beers, Humboldt Brewing. No Russian River or really any other Bay Area brews.
The only saving grace on the selection were the two bottles of the 2009 Mirror Mirror that I picked up.
Although the beer selection was not the greatest, the store itself is very nice. Great food/drink selection and all very high quality foods and drinks.
It's a bit on the pricey side, but I expected that.

I was pretty impressed with the selection they have at the San Mateo branch. better then any other branch. I was able to pick up my Anchor Steam, Old Rasputin, Gulden Draak, Chimay tripel tripel, and a Weltenburger Pils, all in one shot. Looked like they had a great vareity of local stuff too. I look forward to making it back there to try out some other stuff.
They also had a small selection of glassware. The best thing about whole foods is that they have a great selection of beer like this, and then you can walk down the isle straight to the cheese section, and they have a VAST selection of imported and local cheese. As well as other delicacies, breads, wines, organic fruits. Very enjoyable.

A very nice beer store. Great selection and suprisingly decent prices. Lots of imports and micro's and hard to find beers. Occasionally they have some pretty decent sales too. This along with Draegers, Beltramo's, Bevmo and Plumpjack make up the big four beer stores in the Bay Area, IMO. It's usually hard to find help as all the employees are usually running around helping other people. But, the selection is worth stopping by and at least looking. A very wide variety to choose from. Whole Foods is a chain store, so you may be able to find one in your neighborhood.
