I stopped in this little pub on the way down the hill from Spezial Keller. It has a more modern feel to it, not too unlike Cafe Abseits, and unlike the more traditional bier halls and kellers in Bamberg and Franconia.

As you enter, the bar area is on the left. The bar itself is in the center, near the door, with a few stools. There are maybe 7 tables in the place, with some standing room also. It was not very busy during my visit, but those there were on the younger side. There was rock music playing in the background. The walls were adorned with some modern art prints as well as some older black and white photos. The lighting was soft and contemporary.

2 regular beers and 1 special were on-tap (Keesman Pils, Sonnen Hell, and Mönchsambacher Export). There were 3 bottled beers as well, and some shots of local and foreign liquors were available.

They offer a small food menu (though I was disappointed not to find Blaue Zipfel on the menu).

The service was OK, though nothing exceptional nor unexceptional.

Overall a nice place to stop for a bier if you are in the neighborhood. Their hours were 7 pm to 1 am, Mon-Thu, and 7 pm to 2 am, Fri-Sat.

Last visit 9-2005.

As you walk up the hill from the Altstadt towards Spezial Keller, on your left at Obere Stefansberg 11 will be the Stöhrenkeller . This cozy little pub has been in its long life a student dive, an upscale restaurant and now one of the friendiest places to drink in Bamberg.

There are two house draft beers, Keesmann Herrn Pils (one of the owners is a Keesmann) and Sonne Lager from Bischberg. On the weekends it not uncommon to have a keg from a small country brewery. If you are lucky, you might get to taste beer from the fabled "10th Brewery" of Bamberg -- "Robesbierre" by Robert Pawelczak. Robert is a good friend of the three owners and sometimes even helps out on busy nights.

The menu is limitted to snacks and light meals but all are very good. Some local friends said Stöhrenkeller had the best "Blaue Zipfel" (a sausage poached in vinegar) they ever tasted (except for their mother's, of course!).

Stöhrenkeller is open until at least 1am, often later on weekends. Since the breweries mostly close at 11pm, one can walk up the hill from Schlenkerla or Klosterbräu for a nightcap or three. You can finish off with a "Seiben Hügel" ("Seven Hills" after the seven hills of Bamberg) a locally made liqueur.

After you've visited all the breweries, Stöhrenkeller should be high on your list of places to visit in Bamberg.

Hours:7pm to 1am Monday thru Saturday.
