The Family and I stopped by Cape Ann Brewing today after a whale watch for lunch. Alewife and I each led off with the barleywine, a 10oz pour in a slender flute for $5.50. Currently listed at 9.80% ABV, with 78 IBUs.
It was a cloudy amber colored bier, with a creamy, fine, off-white head. Lacing was quite good, though there was minimal carbo to be found. Nose had some mild caramel and a hint of smoke, with some tea slightly evident. Mouth was quite smooth, with a medium-plus body and little prickle on the tongue.
Flavor had some rauch action right off, though nothing like anything from Bamberg. It was a touch dry, with some caramel and toffee hitting the palate. Again, some subtle tea flavors wafted about. The finish had a bit of earthy, floral hopping, though the malts were more out front overall. The ABV was scarily well-hidden, too. We both enjoyed this one quite well! Prosit!

Thin head but it does leave an initial thick ring of lace. The liquid is solidly amber and nearly clear.
Earthy and rich malty sweetness. A little medicinal to the nose.
Very rich with a large dollop of slightly sweet pale malt. Strong band-aide flavor that I find very distracting. The swallow has an alcohol bite to it. A bit thin for the style but the low carbonation helps balance the beer.

Holy crap!
A smoked American Barleywine.
I decided to order this after two Amazing Belgian Golden Ales at the Pub, and the first smell absolutely floored me.
SMOKE!!
I've never smelled smoke from a barleywine before, and I've reviewed nearly 1000 beers over the past 10 years on this website.
Really quite something and a shock.
Taste ended up being very similar to the nose. Very smoke heavy. Very reminiscent of a German Rauch beir actually. It's not a peat smoke at all. The 9% is absolutely hidden in this beer. Mouthfeel is so light I honestly thought it was maybe 6 or 7 percent, tops. Although to be fair, most barelywines are 10%+, so maybe I'm just more of a lush than most. :-)
Anyway... Grain is nice and clean. Not really any distinct malt flavors or hops. Just a nice sipping big smoked beer.
Well folks. Cape Ann continues to raise the roof with their specialty beers. I thought the Imperial Pumpkin Stout was Amazing, then the Chili Stout blew the doors off that, now with a smoked barleywine? I honestly can't understand why they don't release these smaller batches to the public. This is quite possibly the most interesting and tasty beer I've had this year.
Although I got a growler of the Tea Party for the road, I will definitely be back here often. CA's beers just keep getting better and better.
