This place has a decent selection, but the prices are a bit higher than other locations I visited and the service is downright weird. The entire time we were trying to decide on a purchase, the owner (or manager) was constantly berating the guy trying to stock beer, yelling and micromanaging his every move (within 5 feet of us as we perused the cooler). The floor tiles are in shambles (my wife tripped on the way in) and our presence was barely acknowledged during our visit. (I mean, it's a convenience store so I'm not expecting fantastic customer service, but could you at least stop yelling while we're in the store?) Overall I'd say you should only go here if your time in Montreal is limited and you aren't able to head over to Dépanneur Peluso or Épicerie Au Coin Duluth, which offer similar inventory, better prices, and no shouting.

You don't really come here for the atmosphere, although the proprietor has since changed his sign front to something more professoinal than the one that is pictured here on BeerAdvocate. Gone are the plastered paper signs, and a much more silver and white header up top.

Still, the inside of the store is just like any other Depaneur in Quebec. However, there is a shelf that covers one wall filled with a great variety of Quebec Micro brews. La Trou, Charlevoix, Dieu De Ciel, La Brasserie, and many others are represented. When you first walk in though, you'll see a small cooler with limited selection and a few bottles on top, and a few near the cash register. The long wall of beers though is around the corner and easy to miss thinking there isn't much here, so look around and you'll quickly see it.

The proprietor speaks English fine if you need help, and he does know the product. I did ask for a few things and he knew what I was talking about but they didn't have them. As you also may have read, if you come as a vistor not from Canada you can not use credit cards here, it's Cash and Canadian debit only.

This is a great store if you want to take a peak and grab some Quebec beers. However I dropped by on a quiet Sunday, and the proprietor told me that they usually get the bulk of items on Fridays and Saturdays and it becomes quite busy then, and Sundays are a little picked clean and dead customer visiting wise. Everything I've also read calls this place a little expensive, but personally it's inline for what I would pay if I was in DC, and I didn't find it that much more expensive than other places I saw beers at, so I find it reasonable.

Still if you want Quebec beers, this is worth stopping in for, I could have easily bought many things. But if you want more international variety or something else then you're not going to get much out of it.

Dieu de Ciel is also just up the the street a few blocks, so it's a perfect one two punch for visiting.

Wandering around this part of town on a Sunday when most places were closed. Just happened to look up and be standing in front of it. Walked in to the sight of a ton of local craft beers along the walls. The left side of the building is a small refrigerated cooler of single bottles, followed by a wall of single bottles and even some growlers from the Quebec beer scene. The other side of the building is refrigerated packs and boxes of brew. Throughout there are lots of brewery glassware of all different shape/styles, sizes, and from different breweries. Some sale prices for some of the beers, and even some gift packs throughout, too. The prices were a little steep, but I was utterly shocked by the selection. The staff never came out from behind the counter, so I couldn't tell you if they were helpful, friendly, knowledgable, or whatever. Well, I guess friendly is out, since they barely spoke to me even while I was purchasing some brews. Unfortunately for me, I was unprepared to the local beer scene past the major ones, and I didn't have access to BA while I was in there, but I would hit that store up again on a return trip to Montreal.

At first glance I was actually unimpressed with this store, but it quickly grew on me. There's an entire wall filled with different kinds of beer from Québec and a limited selection of foreign beers as well. The beers are a bit pricey, but I don't think its the owner's fault because they're similar to other stores I've been to in the region. The owner was very helpful and gave some hints as to what beers might be worth trying. Of course one of the beers he suggested was his own, but that's to be expected.

Overall, this place is definitely worth the visit. There's a great selection of beers and the staff is friendly.

Please note, this establishment is often called "Le Paradis de la Biere", the lower name on the sign.

In an upscale neighbourhood like Laurier, the place looks a little sketchy from the outside (there's a lot of pieces of flair in the window as you can see) but the selection is impressive and the owner is quite knowledgable and eager to be of assistance. He is quick to highlight where to find value and he takes special requests.

As other posts mention--he sometimes carries beer that is past-due but he usually marks those down in price. "Value" is hard to factor in here in Canada where our taxes are astronomical.

In our city, the government stores carry a paltry selection of beer--therefore little destination stores like this one are worth noting.

Stopped into this place by accident the other day and was surprised at the amount of beer they had. Owner said they have over 600 different kinds of beer with 90% of it consisting of Quebec beers. They had lots of singles and a small amount of 6 packs. Prices seemed high but there were a few deals like bombers of Unibroue for 499-5.49. They also had a few rare beers but they were priced accordingly. If you're into trying various Quebec beers; be sure to check this place out. The bonus is that it's very close to the Dieu Du Ciel pub.

Super near dieu du ciel with almost everything there is in the Quebec micro. They always get a lot of the limited editions of the breweries, they even still have a couple of Hibernus and Lupulus lying around as well as some vintage Unibroue, 2004, 2005, 16, 17 among other vintages. Service is limited since they hardly speak French and English, they are arab which is kind of strange. Still an overall good place. BUT, the prices are a little bit more than what you usually pay, which may be the reasons why they have so many rare quebec beers still in stock.

Amazing selection of Quebec beers. Made me wish I could bring more home to the states, or take a month-long beer tour of the province.

Service was friendly. They also had a pretty good selection of glasses. I grabbed Trois Pistoles glasses and a Fin du Monde glass there. Also picked up a 12-pack of Dieu du Ciel and a 6-pack of Brasseurs du Montreal's La Rebelle Quebecoise, plus some organic beer I'd never heard of from the province.

Like Vices and Versa, this is a great stop for visitors who want an idea of what the province has to offer.

Went here after drinking some brews at Dieu du Ciel just a few blocks away. They recommended it as a place to get not only their beers, but a good selection...and they were right.

Lots and lots of Canadian micros, plus the usual Canadian macros (Sleemans, etc) and Imported macros (Guinness, Corona, etc).

They keep a lot of singles cold, three coolers worth, and then have *most* of them on the long warm wall. Didn't see a lot of classics from Belgium, nor any US beers, but that worked for me because I was searching for Canada's finest. As I was shopping the shelves, the guy came up to me with an empty six-pack holder: nice touch!

My only real complaint, and this is kind of a big one: NO CREDIT CARDS. Either need Cash or a Canadian debit. No American debits. Would probably have bought more if I didn't have to use the ATM two blocks up and then come back to pay.

If you're going to Dieu du Ciel and you're from the US, definitely stop by.

Best part about Rahman is that its almost right next door to Dieu du Ciel, so two stops can be had in the same area. Rahman doesn't look so spectacular from the outside, kind of dingy, but they do have a very solid and diverse beer selection. They have three or four rows of beer, a few coolers, and stacks on the floor. They always have 6 packs of Dieu du Ciel beers, and many other Quebec micros. As noted, prices are a bit high, but I don't mind paying for the convenience of almost one stop shopping when I'm up in that area of town. I can always find enough beer to load up on there. Service is friendly, the proprietor is a nice guy and definitely knows his beer. Some good deals can be had on Christmas/combo packs with glassware as well.

UPDATED: Notching the service and selection up because the guy definitely knows his stuff but i am putting quality down a bit because i found some old beer (a McAuslan Framboise that expires Dec. 2006!) and the general state is a bit haphazard. Prices are still a little high also. Still a good place to buy beer but not my go to place.

ORIGINAL REVIEW MARCH 2007: From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but once inside, i was surprised how big it was. That being said, it is a bit crowded, especially around the beer section as the aisles are somewhat small. Also, it is a kind of grocery store, so you have your foodstuffs & snacks. I like the display at the cash showing approx. 30 beer bottles laid out, some interesting Unibroues, but nothing i haven't seen at Lavigne or Joannette. Although, i did try a interesting raspberry beer from Quebec (sorry, the name escapes me, but it's on the wall, past the cold beer, near the bottom) Service is nice & somewhat knowledgeable, but again, nothing extraordinary, IMHO.

I finally paid a visit to this place yesterday after being in Montreal for almost three months. When I first walked in, I was pretty much overwhelmed at the number of beers this place had, and how many there were that I had never heard of... a lot of obscure Quebec micros it seemed. I browsed around for a bit, discovering some beers previously unknown to me from familiar breweries (St-Ambroise Citrouille, Unibroue Eau Benite). I liked that they sold one-offs of most of the beers (even if they only come in 6-packs elsewhere), meaning you can try a single one before committing to a pack.

I came in with a mental shopping list, and wasn't able to find all the ones I was looking for right away so I got some help from the guy stocking the shelves. In the end I got three beers from Charlevoix, three beers from Bieropholie, and the Unibroue 16 & 17 (which were $15 a piece but oh well). When paying for the beers, the clerk gave me a re-usable Boreale bag to carry my beers, as well as a free beer that he supposedly brewed (Paradisiac Cuivree II). Didn't pick up any DDC on this trip since I'm going to the brewpub on a regular basis these days, but I'll definitely be stocking up before I move out at the end of the month. I wish I lived closer to this place / was staying in Montreal longer cause I'd be at this place picking up a new random beer every few days.

Great selection of regional beers, both cold and room temperature for the trip back to Vermont. I was able to stock up on 12 oz Dieu du Ciel Peche Mortel for 2.99 CA so that makes it worth the trip. I rate the value a bit pricey because the Unibroue, 16, 17 etc, was significantly more expensive here than in Vermont, strange. One negative is they don't take credit cards, since we were traveling I was planning on charging it. Very tight space, be careful not to break anything. Conviently located a block or so from Don di Ciel.

Great selection of Quebec micros. Just a couple of minutes from Dieu Du Ciel! This was the first stop of many on my trip to Montreal and Quebec City so I stocked up for the hotels. The guy at the cash was friendly and had a few good recommendations. A little bit pricey compared to some other stores but the selection makes up for it. Some glassware and other nicknack's as well as your typical corner store stuff. I left with a trunk load of beers (lots of DDC and Unibroue) and a dent in my wallet.

Neat little beer store minutes away from DDC. The whole place is geared more to beer than the average depanneur, although you can still expect to find the odd grocery item lurking. The aisles are chock full of beer cases and navigating them can be quite precarious. It is worth it though, to find the entire range of DDC, as well as noted local breweries like Bieropholie. There is also a few bottles of harder to find beers (including Unibroue 16 and 17) above the cooler to the left of the entrance. There is a good selection of glasswear by the cash. Service is quiet but efficient and friendly. Prices were good, but seemed marginally higher than Metro Joanette in Verdun.

What a compliment to Dieu du Ciel! Amazing selection, amazing owner. The owner was extremely friendly once I admitted I was from California, he immediately started sharing his experiences helping other Californians who had heard about the place. Needless to say, he loves beer.

Selection is diverse and prices are good. Imports, domestic, craft, gift sets, they're all here. All the major craft brewers in Québec were featured in the store. Want to buy a gift set for a beer drinker? Get him/her, for example, a Stella/Hoe/Leffe gift set, complete with the brands' glass and 33 cl bottle.

If you're from out of town and have even the slightest interest in a regionally brewed beer offered here, buy it! You will regret not bringing home beer you can only find at a few Montréal vicinity stores.

I went here while strolling around Laurier, waiting for DDC to open on a Saturday afternoon(darned 3pm opening time!!!). The service was not as friendly as I would have hoped, but not terrible. That seems to be par for the course when you're a young guy buying "geeky" beer. But whatever.

I found the Dieu Du Ciel Péché Mortel in a six pack so I was pretty stoked. $13/6-pack seemed more than reasonable to me. There were countless other Quebecois Microbrews including all Unibroues, and McAuslan. Great selection. I wish I wasn't taking the Metro so I could have brought more with me. Prices were decent. I've seen some prices for the Peche that others have posted so I feel I got a great deal.

As has been mentioned previously, this place is nothing more than a corner store, really, with a great beer selection. I found hot dog buns beside the McAuslan boxed Anniversaire ale. Go figure.

Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. It's a great place to stop at before or after Dieu Du Ciel to pick up a few souvenirs.

I was there on 30 June 07, after a quaff at Dieu du Ciel. The broken glass on the cooler is still held together with tape.
I agree with all of the previous reviewers, regarding the selection, cleanliness, efficiency, tackiness, etc. The owner was quite friendly with me, and we had a fine little chat about the beers. My big score was a new Unibrou 16, which was reviewed by the Bros in the last BA magazine. A also walked out with about 20 Quebec micros that I hadn't seen elsewhere.
Hint: If you have the luxury of time and trunk space, make a shopping list and do some comparisons with other shops like Depanneur Laurier.
I will go back to this store as a side trip to my next visit to DDC.

Not much to add to the other reviews. I stumbled upon the place by accident walking near Dieu Du Ciel and found it in the db afterwards.
Place is a bit run down, but given I was in the neighborhood, it met my needs of getting an idea of what I could get in Montreal. They did seem to have most (if not all) of the Unibroue line.
Service was businesslike, not friendly but not rude.
Given most BAs are going to head to DDC as soon as they hit the ground, this is a decent place to grab some hotel room beers.

It is tough to put numbers on this place, becuase it is a little strange. It is a very small store just south of Dieu Du Ciel on St. Laurier. It is like a convenience store but 75% of the store is taken up by beer. Seems to have a good sampling from all of the local breweries, especially Unibroue (including glasses and some magnums). It is tough to tell exactly what is there because it is not organized very well. Some of the beers were in four or more different locations in the small store. I would have loved if it were organized by brewery or something like that. I wanted to just roam for a while and pick things out. The staff let me do that without helping and/or bothering me. It kind of stinks that they only take cash, but as long as you expect that before-hand it is ok. The beer is a bit pricey. Some of the stock looks like it is a bit old, and some of the sale stickers worry me. Most of the beers I bought are bottle-conditioned and/or strong anyways, so it shouldn't be a big deal. I would definitely stop by here again for some local beers, especially if I were at Dieu Du Ciel anyways.

Kind of bumped into this place by accident on my way out from Dieu du Ciel. This crappy looking convenience store is located ironically on a rather upscale street, surrounded by art galleries, snobbish restaurants and overpriced antique stores.

Let me put it this way, I'd have to be in pretty dire straights to buy a loaf of bread or quart of milk here. It's dirty, dusty, and some of the refrigerator's glass doors in front of the cash register near the entrance were broken and held together with tape. There is Beer everywhere here. My friends and I walked around the store to take a look and as we went to the back the owner behind the counter sent his son to keep an eye on us. If he would have asked if we needed any assistance I would have let it slide as helpfulness, but this really was a case of staring us down so we don't shoplift anything. That kinda insulted me.

As for selection, a few good Québec micros could be found, but for the most part they limited themselves to Unibroue, Brasseurs RJ, Bièropholie and Shoune. They seem to have brews here that haven't been made in a good while, like Unibroue 11. I asked if they had any 10, but the not very talkative owner behind the counter didn't seem to think so. I took close looks everywhere just in case he didn't have a clue as to what I'm talking about. Finding some old Unibroue 11 is great, it's high ABV gives it some pretty darn good cellaring potential. But the thing is he also had in stock some old Beers that I don't think would stand the test of time. For example, I got a bomber of Brasseurs RJ's Sainte Paix Fraises, which I thought they havn't done in at least 2 years. Maybe they decided to make another batch (I didn't see anything on their website), or he's had those for way too long. However, it was in his fridge (the one with the broken glass door), and the label doesn't look like it spent 2 years on the bottle (no best before date, unfortunatly). There's massive buildup on the bottom of this bottle though...I'll open it soon and update my entry.

I've got to give it to them, they have collector's items I haven't seen anywhere else in ages. Glassware from long departed breweries, old T-shirts, magnum bottles of Maudite, old Unibroue gift packs, etc. Most are reasonably priced (except for the magnums).

Would I recommend the place? Sure, if your in the neighbourhood and looking for something hard to find, but if it's freshness you're interested in, I'd suggest someplace else.

Would be pretty mediocre US store, but he makes do with what he can sell. Prices about average for all four stores I visited on this trip. Easy to find parking in front. The price are a bit steep but I guess that is the price to pay for this huge selection. The owner always keep a good quantity of limited edition beer (Mcauslan reserve, Unibroue limited edition package). He's very polite and helpful since he knows what product he's offering. There are even three different Fin Du La Monts: an aged, the normal, and the french export.
