Another part of the tap take over / cask wars at Backstage Restaurant in Torrington, CT this is a muddy brown colored ale with a white/tan fair head and adequate lacing. The aroma offers a familiar Burnside blend of malt and peat and sharp herbal hops. Very appealing. The flavor follows suit with wonderfully earthy malt and leafy-herbal hop bite. There's edgy peat and apple vinegar and a root-beer idea. It's medium body or better with a dry, resinous feel and
generous but pleasant carbonation. This strikes me as being Ten Penny with a decent hop quotient. And, unlike most English IPA's, this actually provides a satisfying hop bite. Very nice.

Ok, is this an English Pale Ale, American IPA, Scotch Ale, Stottish Ale?? It's been described as all of those by various beer bloggers & critics, and I am confused. Perhaps an official description by the brewer is in order, or at least some tag on the label.
Anyway, it has a nice deep, dark copper color with a thin light tan head.
Aroma is roasty and malty with a very slight hop presence. Misleading name on this brew. Not much hoppy about it actually.
Taste similar to smell with some caramel. Again lacking any real hop-forward profile suggested by the name. Not very 'Scottish' tasting either.
I have to be honest, I was fully expecting a nice peaty robust hoppy Scotch Ale, but instead I got a roasty pale ale that seems to have difficulty fitting into a style. It is a good beer, for sure. I think it's just me, but I like knowing what it is the brewer intends.

Pour from a 64 oz growler into a tulip glass. No description on the label.
A - Clear, dark golden amber body with a one finger off-white soapy head. Decent lacing and retention.
S - Super english. Bready malts with some toffee and caramel followed by some piney hops. A touch of warming alcohol and citrus.
T - Follows the nose. Starts off with some bready and caramel malts and finishes with lightly bitter and citrusy hops. Some lingering grass notes. Medium bodied with a low level of carbonation. Easy drinking.
O - A fairly average english IPA. Its solid but it fails to really stand out, which actually isn't a terrible thing for the style. There is a few articles out there saying this may be seeing a smaller format bottle. I would have a hard time choosing this over the superior BBC english IPA's that are available though.
