Got this beer from a colleague. It poured out a deep dark brown with a little less head retention than I would have expected. On the other hand, the legs stuck to the sides of the glass more than I thought from the original pour

The first whiff of this beer hits you with vanilla, sweetness, oak and booze. Once in the mouth the aroma is backed up with a smooth and sweet flavor. The barrel aging seems to overpower the beer quite a bit, but with all the components it's hard to believe this beer is 12%. The beer is a little thinner than expected, but with that much alcohol in it, it may just be that this cuts the body.

Overall this was a unique beer and certainly the rum barrel adds vanilla and sweetness that sets it apart from boubon barrel aged beers. The barrel overpowers the beer a bit and it is perhaps a bit boozy, but at 12% what do you expect?

A- Pours a deep brown body with reddish and mahogany hues. Thin 1-finger khaki head sits fow a few seconds, but when it falls, it falls to a nice solid cap. A touch of sticky lace left behind.

S- A liqour aroma at first, bourbon, oak, vanilla, and a little milk chocolate. All seems in balance. Very nice, albeit a little muted.

T- Wow. This is damn good. Vanilla, bourbon, a slight brandy-ness to it as well. Nice milk chocolate flavor, too. Just like the aroma, the taste is wonderfully balanced.

MF- Moderate body, but is it every a silky texture. Carbonation level is perfect here.

O- A very fine beer. The bourbon flavor and aroma is there, but in no way overpowering. You'd never know that this is a 12% beer. Another fine job by the guys in Hartford!

Black & Tan? Really? I don;t see that from my meager experiences with Guinness and Bass. This stuff is far supperior I'm happy to report, a whole nother category. A solid dark brown color with a fair light tan head with streaky modest lacing. The aroma brings out big time caramel chocolate, vanilla toffee and sweet prune over nutty peat. Wow - Home Run for the nostrils. The flavor is another heavy hitter bringing out deep dark fruits with a maple-vanilla sweetness and a caramel touch. I get some root beer and fermented licorice. This is a chewy beer in flavor but the body is more of a medium light deal with a bit of a syrupy touch that is nicely cut by an active carbonation. Just a delightful dark brew full of sweet and earthy goodies that will put a smile on your face. Awesome brew!

Poured into a snifter at room temperature.
The beer pours a dark cocoa brown with creamy beige head of 1 cm that remains as a surface layer throughout the sampling. Aroma is rich with bourbon and vanilla, brown sugar and some dry oak notes.
First sip reveals an average to thick body with mild rolling carbonation. Smooth silky texture.
Flavor is as the nose advertised with bourbon and brown sugar mixing with a bit of dark chocolate and roasted malt. Where is the booze? 12% is very well hidden. I also dont really get any hop characteristics.
This is a very drinkable 12% brew that features malt through and through with good complexity.
THe cobalt blue bottle is a cool presentation but the cost is a little high, still worth it in my opinion, I just wouldnt make this my nightly beverage.

swing top bottle poured into a Chimay chalice

A- a hazy brownish black, the color resembles a trappist quad almost. Fizzy off white head disperses quickly, with slight lacing.

S- The aroma is a mix of a big vanilla fragrance, chocolate, coffee and some hints of alcohol.

T- Im picking up vanilla chocolate and small subtle hints of oak. Its a descent taste not bad but not really what Im looking for. To me its a little like drinking a cream soda. Just to sweet for me.

M- Light bodied beer with a Chimay like fizzy carbonation.

O- I went into this beer expecting something a bit bigger bodied. Like i said before a little sweet tasting for me and the price tag is just to much. Its not a bad beer but for $12.99 it wont be in my fridge again. This is a one and done for me.

16oz swingtop bottle into a Weyerbacher tulip. This was one of my contributions to the CdC tasting table. Style tick #101.

A: Clear russet body with a solid cap of tan froth. Good retention and lacing. Attractive.

S: Nice. Vanilla, butterscotch, coconut, whiskey, plums, and general barrel-aged goodness. Excellent.

T: Sweet; coconut, whiskey, oak, dark fruit, and some bitterness on the finish. Hints of marshmallow, and some booze. Tasty.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation. A little weak, but not bad at all.

O: Very barrel-forward and extremely tasty - by far the best Burnside beer I've had. I'm not sure I'd by another at the hefty price tag ($12 + $1.50 deposit), but I'm definitely glad I gave it a shot.
