Translucent, seriously hazed nutty amber in appearance, tall frothy slightly off-white head with impressive retention and thick chunky lacing in its wake.

Sweet, almost sugary malt on the nose accompanied by grassy, light grapefruit rind hops.

While the malt is present, the hops seem to be the main attraction here, light toasted biscuity malt overshadowed by a refined and well-behaved blend of hops, earthy, grassy, mildly herbal with a good zip of grapefruit and pine. The hops politely linger on in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is fairly light and lightly carbonated, seems more watery at times than it should be, yet at the same times deceptively gives off the impression of lending itself as a good session ale.

Almost seems more like an assertively hoppy pale ale, or a sort of hybrid IPA (a bit of English hop elements, a bit of American hop elements). Enjoyable, though not overly memorable, however would make a good intro or midway IPA for those getting their palates adapted and familiar to this style, it won't blast out the tastebuds with aggressive hops, all the while with the hops still remaining the predominant character.

A - Half finger head, good retention.
S - Pine, sweet, hoppy.
T - Bit watery, some hops up front, but not the expected sweetness.
M - Little carbonation, bit too smooth for an IPA.
O - Admittedly I'm not a big fan of English IPA's compared to the hoppier versions this side of the pond. That said, the lingering aftertaste and feel of this beer were not pleasant.

355ml brown bottle with pry-off cap poured in a pint glass. From a "Big Box o Beer" 12 pack mixer with Red Hammer, Loki and London Porter.

Copper-orange and just a little hazy. Cream coloured head is 1/2 inch on the pour and recedes to a few islands with strings of lace down the sides.

Strong scent of hops in the aroma. Mostly citrus and pine. Grapefruit, lemon and pine with a hint of caramel.

Bold hops off the start. Some malty balance through the middle then back to a bitter hop finish of pine. Citrus, malt and caramel blending smoothly in a long lasting piney hop finish.

Medium bodied with minimal carbonation.

One of my go to beers when I can get it. Not outstanding, but very solid and satisfying.

355ml bottle poured into a pint glass. ABV 5.4%.

A - Poured a slightly hazy gold with orange highlights. 1cm head reduced to surface bubbles. Some lacing.

S - Caramel, pine, grapefruit. Smells like an IPA.

T - Some caramel sweetness and an unbalanced blend of citrus, grapefruit, tobacco and pine. A mild bitterness lingers in the aftertaste.

M - Medium carbonation, medium body, some oiliness, finish is a bit dry.

O - It's alright but there's something unbalanced in this one.

Bottle acquired form the MLCC within a few weeks of its arrival. No freshness date, poured into a Perfect Pint glass after 10 minutes of being removes from the fridge.

A:Pours a nice amber with a fluffy white head that drops to a light cap that leaves only small globs of lacing upon the edges of the glass.
S: Earthy hops with a bit of pine. Sweet caramel malts along with a hint of corn.
T: Dank earthiness to the hops, yet not nearly to my expectations of an IPA. Got bready malt backbone with a hint of sweetness.
M: Fairly strong bitterness that balances very well with the sweetness. Bitterness builds on the tongue. Great feel on the palate though as the even-handed carbonation, bitterness and body make it seem not too thin, yet certainly not too thick for the style.
O: Some stuff to love about this beer, but still not up to my expectations. An English IPA hop profile, but still a little more subdued than I would have liked...

355 mL bottle from TBS; packaged May 17 2012. Probably the only Saskatchewan-made beer available locally, seeing this one on the big board was a bit of a surprise - but I am always pleased to see another IPA available in town. Served only slightly chilled.

Pours a bright, clear orange-copper colour, topped at first with two fingers of puffy, frothy, off-white head that wilts away gradually over the following minutes. Left in its wake is a doily-pattern coat of lacing, and a smooth, even cap on the surface. The aroma is dominated by biscuity, bready malts and caramel, with some piney, vaguely citrusy hops to round it out. Decent for the style; nothing particularly notable.

The flavour is approachable, but definitely English in character and not something that will impress a lot of hopheads. As with the aroma, the flavour is mostly malty, with toasted bread, buttery, biscuity malts and caramel comprising the backbone. Grapefruit rind and some pine sap from the hops come forward in the finish. Dry aftertaste, with some lingering caramel maltiness. Medium-bodied, with mild carbonation and an exceptionally smooth mouthfeel. Very drinkable for an IPA, with the low-ish abv probably being a big reason for that.

Way better than Brewhouse - the only other SK-made beer I have reviewed previously. This is about as sessionable as an IPA gets, but flavour-wise it's not really a stand out in the category and not the sort of thing I'd go out of my way for. Reminds me of a lighter Dead Elephant or maybe Hops and Robbers - serviceable and fairly tasty, but nothing more.

Final Grade: 3.65, a respectable B grade. Paddockwood's 606 IPA is better than 95% of the stuff at TBS, and if you are a fan of English-style, malty IPAs, you should certainly consider it worth a try. This isn't the freshest IPA I've ever had, but it's definitely one of the most drinkable. Something I'd like to try on-tap some time, and an enjoyable selection for my 350th review.

A surprising find at "The Beer Store", this beer poured a color I would describe as halfway between amber and ruby with some subtle head and lacing. Smell starts sweet, then hoppy, and finishes with a malty aroma. Taste is quite nice. I find the hops are well balanced against the malt, making for a sweet, slightly bitter start with a malty grain finish. The hops don't seem to linger too long in the aftertaste making this actually quite refreshing and not at all over the top like some other beers of this style.

I enjoyed this, and will likely get it again.

341ml bottle poured into a pint glass.

A - About a finger of off-white head. Honey amber-orange hue that looks really good. Small lacing, little head retention.

S - Pretty toasty aroma. Earthy hops and caramel malt. Some citrus and pine; grapefruit and orange.

T - Starts off with bready, caramel malt, and quickly finishes with bitter, piney hops. Some sweetness and citrus in the finish, with grapefruit and oranges being the most evident again. Overall though, the flavor feels a bit muted. The warm malt is nice, but not very noticeable. But the hop flavor here just doesn't make up for it either.

M - Medium carbonation, with a bit of prickles on the tongue. Medium-to-light body. The hops become a bit drying in the back of my mouth after a while.

D - Nice, drinkable IPA. The malt flavor isn't totally buried under the hops, and the citric and bitter flavors are well balanced. Worth drinking again.

Bottled in March?!?! Ugh, oh well here goes. Finally available in my town thanks to North American Craft. Maybe I should have waited for the next batch.

Pours a clear, rusty amber colour with a generous light tan-coloured head that takes a good 7-10 minutes to burn off, leaving a healthy amount of lace and a small collar in its wake.

Smells of caramel sweetened, toasted malts and has lemon, pineapple and orange citrus notes. Dark floral tones and an earthy hint as well.

Fairly well-balanced, though a syrupy dark caramel taste is most prevalent. Nice citrus tang at first, a fruity, cherry-like laste on the tongue and a crisp lemon-orange citrus finish.

Medium-bodied with a low carbonation. Long-lasting collar provides a creaminess on the tongue before an oily feeling takes over on the back of the tongue.

Considering its ancient by IPA standards, this beer is still quite good. The solid malt backing and cherry tone balance the citrus hop flavours and give it a nice mellow character. Will certainly try again and can't wait to get a fresh one.

Released by the LCBO last year and a truly delightful surprise. Hasn't aged as well as I'd hoped, but notes from last year hold true...

Colour a beautiful, clear amber. Aroma pleasantly hoppy, but taste the definite highlight of this brew. Well balanced hoppy tones; grapefruit, pineapple and mango - with caramelized malts and a delightful bitterness.

An American Pale Ale I am very proud to call Canadian (aside from some effervescence issues when pouring some bottles?)... Well done, Paddock Wood! Can't wait to taste the 2011 release.

Amber, fairly clear with a copper veneer that catches the light and glistens. Tan/beige head was spritzy and looked good on the pour but didn't last long. Smell was of wet hay, shoe leather, but in an okay way. There is the suggestion of hops that could be brought out a bit more than it is; muted hoppiness might be the right descriptor. Malty finish, balanced enough to make a drinkable, although not great, IPA. The world needs more IPA's, not a bad attempt Paddock Wood B.C.

The beer is a striking orange-amber that is notably robust; a golden underpinning is revealed in the light along with the full showcasing of its polished, shimmering coppery luster. The pour was concerningly flat, and you almost need a microscope to make out the thin line of white that loops around the surface. I won't be expecting any lacing.

The nose has an optimistic amount of grapefruit flesh and orange skin as well as a faint candy sweetness and a trail of tiny pine needles, much like the one left by a dried-out Christmas tree being taken out to the curb. Amber malts are discernible - as are harder than usual water minerals - but malty toast and sweetness come in moderation.

Not that the aroma was blaring to begin with, but my first few sips give the impression that someone turned the volume of the beer way down. The hops are nearly inaudible, imparting little more than a very faint citrusy character, and the malts too are clammed up, with hardly any flavour, let alone succulence. This ain't no damn library - speak up, boy!

So the flavour is mild, but at least it's pleasant. Unfortunately it's a bit harder to put a similar positive spin on the mouthfeel, but here goes: water minerals are evident and sparkle on the palate (good thing though, the carbonation is almost flat). A faint, fruity zest lingers in the aftertaste, lending a nice earthy note without much astringency or bitterness.

Relative to most American (and increasingly Canadian) offerings, 606 is an IPA whose hoppiness coasts on fumes. Still, there's probably enough in the tank to please some fans of the style, and it's without a doubt agreeable enough to appeal to most mainstream drinkers. I could have done without a full six pack, but will look forward to the next few bottles.

Pours a nice deep amber colour with an average looking and lasting creamy off-white head.
Smells of caramel and delicate lemony/spicy hops, very mild overall.
The first thing I notice is the malt which lends bready and caramel/toffee sweetness. I would say this is moderately hopped, which lacks much of the delicate citrusy flavour from the nose, and instead is largely sharp and piney. Finishes on the dry side and is nicely balanced.
Moderate body and carbonation, nothing unexpected to report in that department.
I picked this up from TBS not realizing it was bottled back in December. That being said, while it seemed to lack a bit of hop punch and aroma (perhaps due to freshness), it is still drinking quite well, and still beats out much of the Ontario craft options in the category.

355ml bottle from a six pack purchased at the Hyland Centre Beer Store in London, ON. Thanks for sending this our way, Steve!

Pours a clear copper hue with a thick ring of eggshell white froth and sheets of stringy lacing on the Perfect Pint glass.

Smell is burnt toast, pine, caramel, blood, iron, kiwi, and orange rind. On a previous bottle I detected wet paper and cardboard, and there are trace amounts of both here, which is very unfortunate.

However, the taste is just fine. I get spicy, bitter, and citric hops upfront, some balancing biscuit and caramel flavours mid-palate, and a big juicy, astringent hop bitterness with grapefruit pith and orange peel on the cough. IBUs linger on the palate.

Mouthfeel is silky smooth, medium bodied, crisp carbonation, lush and juicy middle (a little oily) transitions to a snappy hop bite with a lasting, dry finish.

This IPA isn't quite as robust and complex as the great American renditions, but it's still a good example of the style, and one of the better ales available in Ontario right now. Go snag a sixer from TBS and find out for yourself.
