On-tap at a local pub

A- Dark brown, tends to shine with golden hints if seen through light. Head is not big but nicely creamy, and has a decent retention

S- Sweet malts and some caramel. Some smoke hints bring balance, otherwise it would be way too sweet

T- The malt, very sweet but delicate, is again dominat, despite the low ABV. Then hints of berries and herbal notes. After some shock you realize that you were not wrong, this beer has a honey taste: strange but again delicate, and well balanced by other flavours. Good, though the aftertaste is a bit metallic

M- This has a pretty strong and round body for the style, let's say that it is almost a bock. Still it has the typical smoothness of a Hell. Carbonation is perfect

D- Extremelity drinkable and still decently complex. That slight metallic aftertaste takes half a point away though

Nothing that is worth high praises, but sure a fine beer

On-tap at Augustiner am Platzl, on to the beer:

Augustiner Dunkel features a ruby brown/chestnut color with reddish hues as it sits inside the mug. The head on top is fluffy, retains well, and gives off several waves of lacing. The nose is a sign of good things to come, with raisin, unsweetened chocoalte, and a touch of cocoa. Despite the sweet flavors, they're contained well and don't spoil the palate. Similar is the taste, which is a lovely taste of chocolate covered raisin and a note of dark chocolate as an extra layer, again well balanced. It's medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

A very pleasant dunkel lager. This is a classic and worthy drink in the Munich tradition.

One of Munich's best beers which is saying much. This beer is for the true daily beer lovers. I wouldn't say it's as smooth as many a Belgium beers but the Dunkel version is something to look forward to. A great tasting full body beer and can be drank in large amounts as I can attest to. I was a recipient of generosity by the Augustiner brew master for we bought direct a 50L keg and brought it back to the states. To say the American beer drinkers were in ahhh of this brew is an understatement.

.5L flask on tap at Augustiner Keller in Munich.

Clear dark brown with orange and red highlights, and visible carbonation. Tan head is moderately thick and quite durable. Patchy lacing left on glass.

Aroma: simple and light aroma of medium malt with some faint floral hops.

T: Nicely malty and flavorful; very good sweet/bitter balance.

M: smooth; medium body; medium carbonation.

O: excellent example of style.

500 ml bottle just slightly past the declared BB date (06. 2012). Dark coppery-brown body with garnet tint and good clarity gets overlain by rather thin light-tan head that dissipates. Sweet aroma of caramel, chocolate, bread crust and nutty notes transfers to the flavor. The beer that lacks any inappropriate intense roasted flavors starts malty but never gets cloying and finishes dry with hop-bitterness and mild nutty aftertaste.
Creamy with sufficient carbonation teasing the palate. Very good.
