On-tap at Augustiner am Platzl, on to the beer:
Augustiner Dunkel features a ruby brown/chestnut color with reddish hues as it sits inside the mug. The head on top is fluffy, retains well, and gives off several waves of lacing. The nose is a sign of good things to come, with raisin, unsweetened chocoalte, and a touch of cocoa. Despite the sweet flavors, they're contained well and don't spoil the palate. Similar is the taste, which is a lovely taste of chocolate covered raisin and a note of dark chocolate as an extra layer, again well balanced. It's medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
A very pleasant dunkel lager. This is a classic and worthy drink in the Munich tradition.

One of Munich's best beers which is saying much. This beer is for the true daily beer lovers. I wouldn't say it's as smooth as many a Belgium beers but the Dunkel version is something to look forward to. A great tasting full body beer and can be drank in large amounts as I can attest to. I was a recipient of generosity by the Augustiner brew master for we bought direct a 50L keg and brought it back to the states. To say the American beer drinkers were in ahhh of this brew is an understatement.

500ml bottle served in a Weizen glass.
A: Pours a beautiful clear copper color forming a medium white to yellow head. Good retention but only few lacings formed and left

T: Follows the nose. Sweet toffee , caramel and roasted malts. Biscuity. Bready Lager yeasts and slightly hoppy bitter end
M: Light to medium body. Medium to low carbonation. Caramel malts aftertaste
O: Good drinkability. Great beer. Augustiner quality

.5L flask on tap at Augustiner Keller in Munich.
Clear dark brown with orange and red highlights, and visible carbonation. Tan head is moderately thick and quite durable. Patchy lacing left on glass.
Aroma: simple and light aroma of medium malt with some faint floral hops.
T: Nicely malty and flavorful; very good sweet/bitter balance.
M: smooth; medium body; medium carbonation.
O: excellent example of style.

500 ml bottle just slightly past the declared BB date (06. 2012). Dark coppery-brown body with garnet tint and good clarity gets overlain by rather thin light-tan head that dissipates. Sweet aroma of caramel, chocolate, bread crust and nutty notes transfers to the flavor. The beer that lacks any inappropriate intense roasted flavors starts malty but never gets cloying and finishes dry with hop-bitterness and mild nutty aftertaste.
Creamy with sufficient carbonation teasing the palate. Very good.

Served on tap in the Augustiner-Brau Beer Hall, Munich.
A - CLear, deep brown. Suprisingly small amount oh head, with little retention and some lacing.
S - Toasted malty, cereal grains, chocolate and hops.
T- Sweet, toasted malt balanced with bitter hops and hints of chocolate and toasted nuts.
M- medium bodied and medium carbonation.
D - Delicious beer. Worth having next time I'm in Munich.

nice dark brown, rusty brown in color with a good bit of cloudiness that seemed to settle itself out after a few minutes. A small but persistent head of off white formed on the top and managed to hang around for a good bit before settling out.
Aroma is deep and dark from the start. Rich dark caramel notes are all over this one. Roasted nuts, some brown sugar, dark frits, figs maybe? Really just complex as I even pull a touch of vanilla through after a few minutes. Really nice, and quite full feel for the style, due in most part to near perfect carbonation. This allows the flavor to roll across the palate and really just cling to every ounce of taste buds you have. Caramel, bready notes, hints of light spice are all leading the charge here as each sip seems to become better and better

Tasted this one in Munchen, Bavaria on a perfect sunny summer day at the Augustiner brau hall. nice head retention over a clear mahogany/burnt amber body. the aroma is of a bready nature, though i could justify it being nutty as well. the flavor is bready too, but not rich enough to be nuttyclean, spritzy (once when i was a beer rookie i described a dunkel with the word "velvety") this beer is not velvety, nor should it be. the bitterness is minimal but hop flavor is good sweet and toatly german.

Bottle (500ml) in Munich -
A dark mahogany brown colour with hints of a dark amber throughout. The beer is clear and forms a large, off-white slightly brownish head that settles & slowly forms a thick lacing of a head.
Roasted malts mainly with toffee and some general sweetness with hints of chocolate making this a strong, pleasant smelling beer.
An excellent tasting roasted malt & nutty chocolate flavour and mild aftertaste that is almost bitter free. Hints of toffee throughout make for a well balanced beer.
This smooth dunkel is medium bodied & very well balanced making it very easy to drink and quite crisp for a dark beer.
A really nice dunkel & a welcome change from my usually preference of lighter beers. This one was easy to drink & would make a great tasting session beer.
1001 Beer you must try:

On-tap at a local pub
A- Dark brown, tends to shine with golden hints if seen through light. Head is not big but nicely creamy, and has a decent retention
S- Sweet malts and some caramel. Some smoke hints bring balance, otherwise it would be way too sweet
T- The malt, very sweet but delicate, is again dominat, despite the low ABV. Then hints of berries and herbal notes. After some shock you realize that you were not wrong, this beer has a honey taste: strange but again delicate, and well balanced by other flavours. Good, though the aftertaste is a bit metallic
M- This has a pretty strong and round body for the style, let's say that it is almost a bock. Still it has the typical smoothness of a Hell. Carbonation is perfect
D- Extremelity drinkable and still decently complex. That slight metallic aftertaste takes half a point away though
Nothing that is worth high praises, but sure a fine beer

Pours cherry amber with a nice carpet of taupe head that fades fast with no real lace. Nose is sour rye bread and cherry Blowpop. Red berries and brown bread plus a bit of smoke with grassy hops to finish and a bit of flint. Dry finish and tingly spice linger. Light, crisp, some chew.
Not a huge amount of experience, so tough to say if this is insubstantial or just to style. Drinks quick either way, but I've had better and worse.

On tap at the Augustiner beer hall at the Karltsplatz in Munich.
Pours a ruby reddish brown with a big two finger tan head that leaves a little lacing.
Nose is malt and sweet caramel
Taste is heavy toasty malts, a little sweetness and a light hop bitterness on the finish.
Decent carbonation, not too much, make for a medium mouthfeel.
This is a nice drinkable dunkel, however the heavy malty body prevents this one from being a true session beer.

S- Strong Malt, Toffee, sweetness in the end
T- Strong on the Malt with a nice balance between the sweetness and a light smoke taste
M- Thick body with a Medium Carbonation
D- Good Beer that goes great with a meaty meal

0.5l bottle. Pours a clear mahogany color with a decent, creamy off-white head, fair lacing. Aroma is nutty, caramel, bread, and a hint of wood. Flavor is sweet malts, caramel, a hint of roasted malts, some dark fruits, and a hint of earthy hops. Mouthfeel is medium, carbonated, dry, and crisp. Good dunkel, balanced and tasty.

Had on tap at the Augustiner beer hall on the Marienplatz, Munich
A - Dark, chocolately brown that is clear and fizzy. Slightly offwhite head that is fluffy and leaves great lacing.
S - Very malty with a touch of sweetness and grassy hops. Milk chocolate powder and wheat toast.
T&M - Great toasty malt with just a touch of sweetness to help balance this out. Hops add a hint of grassiness, but not quite as much as the Helles or Edelstoff. Moderate carbonation makes this a little dry.
D - Another sessionable beer and also goes great with German food. Lord knows German food is best seasoned with beer.

The toasty malt aroma gets you right off the bat. There is a slightly metallic tone in both the flavor and the smell. It has a dark brown body with some little tan bubbles forming the tan head and lace. It has roasted malt taste but that is average for this style. It is a good beer. Do not get me wrong but it is average or less for this area. There is barely any hops bitterness. The mouthfeel is smooth.

Picked this one up at Bert's Bierhuis in Utrecht.
From a bottle into my Augustiner beer glass.
APPEARANCE: Pours a big three finger medium-thick fluffy off-white head that slowly pops and recedes to a decent film cap. Head retains well. Color is a mahogany or rust brown, is perfectly clear, and has medium carbonation in the form of very small bubbles. A decent film remains and leaves some lacing down the glass. Good looking.
SMELL: Sweet caramel malt and a good dose of toffee. A touch of toasted malt and bread in the background, but the sweet caramel and toffee are dominant. Decent strength as well.
TASTE: Lots of sweet caramel malt and toffee up front; everywhere really. A bit of rye bread through the middle and end as balance, but it's all about the sweeter malts here, without being overpowering. Aftertaste has some toffee, rye bread and a touch of tartness and chocolaty bitterness at the end. Well done.
PALATE: Full bodied and medium carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry on the palate. No bite at all. Definitely measures up to their vollbier hier. Great feel.
OVERALL: A great dunkles lagerbier for sure. Full bodied and enjoyable. The bolder flavors might make it tough to drink too many of these, but the one I had was a real treat. I also sampled this one on tap in Munich and it was a gem there as well. Recommended.

Not sure why I'd never had this before, but I've VERY glad I did.
Had this at the Augustiner Am Dom in 05/09. Arrives in a 1/2L glass with the requisite 2" head. It's a pretty deep dark brown color with tiny amber highlights. Not much light is making it through this one, though.
Smells really malty and chocolatey, but clean.
The flavors up-front are chocolate, cola, a dash of hops, and the finish has a distinct molasses taste that I love in a dunkel. I love this stuff for sure.
Arguably the best example of the style and at least on par with the Ayinger and Andechs examples.
Goes down too easy and because there's no booziness to it, that flavor never really gets drowned out or muted.
If you're in Munich - you can get this at many of the Augustiner restaurants although it was nowhere to be found at the biergartens I visited.
Get it - you'll be glad you did!

Pours clear dark copper with reddish tint and tan head, leaves patchy lacing. Aroma is sweetish malty with some caramel.
Taste is nice light roasted and bittery malty, hints of nuts, breadish and slightly sweet bittery aftertaste with some lemon. Very, very light mouthfeel, I did not like that and expected something better.
Overall, I really enjoyed the beer.

Poured a deep brown with red highlights. Frothy head with large bubbles. Dissipates to a ring. Aroma is of darker malts and tartness.
Taste is nice with some good chocolates and subtle coffee flavors coming from the malts. The slightest touch of dark fruit. Low bitterness, but there is a tartness from the hops, I would assume. This beer is a little too fizzy for me-- too much like a soda. But overall, the mouthfeel was desirable and very drinkable. Tasty and worthwhile.

Had on draft at the Augustiner Grossgastatte in Munich.
A- Poured into a 1 liter mug, is very dark brown, with a very thick tan head.
S- Somewhat sweet and fruity, no noticeable hops though.
T- very malty but balanced, the beer finishes dry without any real bitterness.
M- very smooth, the beer coats our mouth, but isn't cloying, medium body.
D- Very drinkable, we had two liters and could have stayed for more if there weren't more beer halls in Munich to explore.

Tasted this 500ml bottle on 16,12.2007, best by 01.08. Purchased in Munich a week before.
The appearence, when poured was the best bit; dark mahogony clear body with a full light tan head. Ruby tinge when held against the light.
The smell was very subdued, some maltiness just about evident.
The taste was a bit of a let-down (for me). Fairly bland really.
Not offensive, but not great either. Not quite the brew I had experienced on tap in Munich.
Better on tap.

Had this on tap at the Augustiner brewery in Munich. It was served perfectly and had all the qualities of a good dunkel, along with that brewery fresh feeling. What I found unique about this dunkel was the slightly muddy/slippery/buttery mouthfeel which I thought was fantastic. It added to its drinkability although I could only have a couple of Dunkels in one sitting anyway.
This is an all-round classic and my favourite from the Brewery.

I was in Munich Germany with my wife on our honeymoon and was at the Augustiner Keller one night and had the Augustiner Dunkel all night long:
Appearance - Dark Copper with large head and nice lacing around the edges of the glass
Smell - The hops character was easily distinguishable overall but the malt character was weak at first but finished almost like German style rye bread.
Taste - Has the great Munich Augustiner taste with a touch of walnut, roasted malt and cocoa powder
Mouthfeel- very crisp considering it was a darker beer not a hint of dry aftertaste.
Drinkability - Definitely a session beer. Maybe it was the atmosphere, maybe it was the people but I had 8 of these throughout the night and never thought twice about it.

500ml serving in standard augustiner glass, vom fass, at the Augustiner Großgaststätte im Marienplatz
A - Agressive pour produces a deep copper chestnut body with a creamy think 3 finger head, lacing is very good.
S - lots of roasted rich malts, some bitter chocolate, breadiness..
T - Very bold in malt and bitterness, which softens in the aftertaste, to produce a slight toffee/chocolate flavouring, a good balance, maybe a little extreme on the roasted malt bitterness.
M - Medium body, high carbonation
D - Good dunkle, but my opinion may be askew, as i had already had the edelstoff, and weissbier before this, and was full of schnitzel! Therefore, maybe the bitterness and high carbonation, made me feel a little uncomfortable!
Oh well, just need to go back to Munich for another sample :D
