light golden amber lager shaping up before my eyes. A small, maybe a half an inch of white head came up over the top and settled down quickly into a light veil across the top.

The aroma was light. Some small amount of smoked in it, with lots of grain and bready malts, though I have to admit, not much here to really pick up on. The flavor was a bit better. Lots of campfire like smokiness in it, with a subtle, yet easily definable bready malt base. Some sweetness, caramel maybe and a light peach flavor when cold that quickly gets burnt out by the smoked and roasted malts. Way too light of a feel, almost makes the flavor get lost as it comes across a bit watered down.

Thanks, Chris.

A: The beer pours a clear golden straw color with a finger of white head.

S: A pretty sweet aroma to this beer. Heavy on the pale malts with a little bit of corn to it. Minimal hop notes, perhaps a light floral quality to it. Some sugar and bread to it as well.

T: Luckily, the flavor is a bit more balanced. Nice sweetness of pale malts and bread. There seems to be a light adjunct quality to it, but a nice bit of floral malts and a very faint bitterness.

M: Light to medium in body with a moderate carbonation.

O: Not the best Helles I've had, but certainly drinkable and good for a hot day.

Appearance: Pours a clear pale golden color with a beautiful head that never beats a retreat and leaves plenty of lacing

Smell: Crisp, with a moderate tone of flowery hops, but primarily cracker malt driven

Taste: Opens with a mouthful of Munich malt flavor and just a touch of hop after the swallow

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and moderate to heavy carbonation

Drinkability: A very nice refreshing beer from one of Munich's best breweries

5.7% ABV per the label.

Pours a clear yellow with a foamy white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. There is initially a strong skunk aroma after the pour that dissipates somewhat over time. I am also getting some malt, grain, and grassy and herbal aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet grain flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the flavors are a bit too sweet in my opinion.

A very good German lager. Lightly flavored and textured. Aromas are crisp and light. Medium maltiness and a bit grainy, but not bad. Flavors of mint and Granny-smith apples spice the beer up a bit. Still light and clean on the palate. Finishes crisp and clean. It could have a bolder malt and hop profile, but not if it means less crispnenss. It's better than most German Lagers.

This was a beer I havent seen before and decided to pick it up,ours an extremely pale yeloow with a light wispy head, aroma is softly malty with a light hop bitterness that lingers.A very clean refreshing tasting brew with some mild cracker maltiness although I thought it was a tad watery in the finish and body.A real easy drinker here it would be great on a hot summer day.

Edelstoff Exportbier, Augustiner Braeu Munchen Edelstoff

"Kuhl und dunkel lagern"...also, Zutaten: Wasser, Gerstenmalz, Hopfen."
500 ml bottle.

Transparent and pale yellow appearance. Huge, milk white head, slims down, but stays.

Aroma: although this is a fresh bottle, the smell is slightly skunky. Typical Euro-lager aroma, ....nothing really to commend it.

Taste: spritz of carbonation of front, then mostly flavorless. Light in body, Very drinkable, but not particularly memorable. Clean. Inoffensive. I'm liking this more as we go. However, Edelstoff doesn't really have anything to set apart for any other lager.

A: The beer is clear light yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that faded away and left a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderate aromas of grainy malts and floral hops in the nose.
T: The overall taste is quite malty; there are some hints of malty sweetness in the initial taste and the finish has a mild amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and very crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a bit of dryness in the finish.
D: The beer is easy to drink and rather sessionable.

I loved drinking this beer in Germany, bought it by the rack, let's see how it fares crossing the sea

Pours an effervescent gold/honey with 3 fingers of pearl colored head. Good lacing & average head retention

S: Perfumy hops & some lemon

T: Lemony & herbal hops, breadyness, & slight grapefruit up front. Breadyness & honey malt & hoppy crispness as this warms. Finishes crisp, soapy & moreishness

MF: Medium bodied, nice spritzyness & superb balance

Great drinkability, a damn fine helles, was even better (fresher) in Germany if memory serves me..

This beer poured out has a pale golden color, the head was a little fizzy and left just a touch of lacing. The smell of the beer has the traditional German aroma, there a light skunk and grass aromas. There also a little lemon on the nose. The taste is actually a little citrusy mixed with the grassy flavors. It's got a pretty refreshing mouthfeel actually and it's got a lighter body. Overall this beer was much better than I expected it to be.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a clear gold with a pallid white head, solid retention, spotty lace.

S: Bready pils style malt, with some minerality.

T: Classic bready malt flavour, with an interesting herbal almost minty hop flavour with lemons. Minerality/notes of sulfur continue bordering on kellerbier.

M: Very crisp, biting carbonation/champagne type bubbles. Mild acidity. Real pleasing.

D: One of the more complex imported Helles I've had. I think it would be a sight to see/taste in Munich proper, but it's held up well. Overpriced though IMO a $18-20 a 6er.

12 oz. bottle served in a small narrow stange glass.

Pale gold, streaming carbonation that rose steadily from the bottom of the glass. Thin layer of white foam on the surface, fizzled down quickly into a light veil with a slight collar around the edge, and some minimal lace that stuck around.

Average lager smell, clean, dry grain, slight grassiness.

Flavor was sort of bland with a dry, papery saltine cracker taste, some grassy hop bitterness in the aftertaste, but fairly subtle. Feel was very light and a bit watery. Dry with little to no residual sweetness, left with a somewhat hollow impression. It was ok to pair with some food, but ultimately just a pedestrian lager that didn't hold interest for long.

Taste: mild malt level with some lemon, mild bitterness, and grass. A touch of biscuit rounds it out. Overall pretty refreshing.

Mouthfeel: crisp throughout. Light in body. Dry and pretty clean finish.

Drinkability: a light and easy to drink beer, but flavor profile is a bit milder than expected. Definitely a refreshing summer beer.

Pours bright yellow with a decent, foamy white head that descends to a wide patch, leaving some lacing.

The smell is grainy, grassy with a touch of lemon-lime.

The taste is sweet grain and grassy with a floral hop touch. It finishes refreshingly dry.

Appropriately light-bodied, it has something towards a fizzy feel, but is smooth and crisp. Thirst-quenching, for sure.

A nice "sessionable"/easy-drinking Helles with a good balance to it within the style.

Picked up a single from Abe's 6-pack.

Looks a brilliant, clear gold with a white head. Smells of bland, sweet malts with a little yeast character. There's more malt and a little hop character in the flavor, making for a beer that's just a step above your average Euro pale lager. Not bad, just not very complex. Washes down Mexican quesadillas loaded with peppers quite nicely.

Pours a golden hue with a bright white head, leaves 2-3 fingers worth of head space. Fine even lacing very nice look to it. Aroma has a light lemongrass/herbal hop note with light biscuit malts, slight metallic edge from the hard water. Flavor is great a fresh easy drinking helles lager right out of Munich. Light biscuit/crackers from the malts, herbal lively slghtly citric hops in the background refreshing as all hell. Very clean drinking experience this is an art form. Mouthfeel is light bodied carbonation is sturdy and natural never heavy on the palate no harshness to be had here. Drinkability is grab a sixer type of beer, at least a six. Great for the summer I'm glad fresh Edelstoff showed up at my local.

Pours a clear straw gold. Some white head that does not stick around. Nice airy clean nose, with not a lot punching my senses really. Flavor has a good profile. Nice earthy and grainy qualities to it. No skunk. No metal. Smooth. Feel has a fair amount of carbonation in there. Liquid feel is fairly thick as well, but in a lager sense of it all. Definitely drinkable. Smooth and fairly well bodied.

(Served in an Imperial pint glass)
A- This beer pours a crystal clear pale gold body with a creamy mousse white head that is supported by a sea of tiny bubbles swirl around.
S- The aroma of soft pale malt that is dry with a dry green hop note. There is a faint dried leaves and grain note that comes through as the beer warms.
T- This beer has a smooth soft dry grain hint with some dry honey malt hints grow as the beer warms. There is a low hop green note of noble bitter hops that linger a bit and a very light sweetness in the finish.
M-This beer has a light mouthfeel with a tight fizz finish.
D- This beer has a nice smooth beer but there is some nice depth of flavor for such a light beer. And it has a nice freshness to the crisp malt flavor.

Thanks to my friends Jack and Kristin for bringing this back from Germany.

Pours a creamy and fizzy almost 2 finger head that fades semi quickly with a slight bit of lacing over brilliantly clear banana wheat opaque beer. Nose was a little on the light side too, could have opened up a bit.

Nose light grassy hay, straw, nice decoction complex mash, crisp lager with a hint of lager fruit, hint of grassy floral hops.

Taste light and crisp, lots of soft malt with a light decoction complexity, light straw, light toasty. Crisp and light fruity lager, and some pilsner malt flavors. Light floral hint grassy hops. The end brings a hint of a cracker. Finish is dry and crisp, toasty pilsner malts, hint of grassy hops lingering.

Mouth is lighter bodied, soft and subtle, decent carb.

Overall nice, lighter but good flavors, good malt and mash profile, fairly tasty and very drinkable.

When the bartender at Max's mentioned they had the Augustiner pilsner, I became rather excited. This is what he meant... should have known it was too good to be true. Regardless....

The beer pours a striking gold color with fairly good head retention and light lacing. Don't get a whole lot on the nose, but what I get is pretty attrative, consisting of light honey, a hint of pepper and dry citrus, and light bread dough. On the palate, this is flat out delicious. The flavor profile replicates the nose in this impeccably balanced, deliciously crisp and dry helles lager. There's some underlying sweetness, but it's just enough to keep the light bitterness in check. Mouthfeel is fairly light, but with a long, crisp, clean, satisfying finish. Alcohol is no more than an after thought in this well made helles.

Why anyone would drink any of the BMC macro swill when this is available is a complete mystery to me. Very nice beer...

The regular brown 500ml bottle, best before 03/2010, drank and reviewed 01/2010. Poured three times into a Veltins Pilsner stemmed tulip.

Pale gold, clear, bright and clean. On top sat a snow white crown of foam.

Cereal, grassy aroma, a litle hint of hops and yeast if you sniff and believe.

No great flavour, typical of the style, it is refreshing and lightwieght in the mouthfeel. It does however have an after kick, the alcohol comes in towards the end and leaves a pleasant malty (for a Helles) reminder that you've had a beer.

It's breakfast time and I don't have any orange juice to start my day. I'll start it off with this German lager. On to the beer:

Into a stange it goes, this beer has a washed out straw color to it, like a glow in the dark color. The head is one cm thick, and holding up on top. I like the aroma here; grain, big burst of pineapple, lemon, hay. I should stop teasing myself and start drinking it already.

I like my helles lager to have a smooth flavor. This one is a little bumpy on the ride. Somewhat bready upfront, it turns grassy with some herbal flavors. Sweet grain tones and a subtle veggie note finish the journey.

Not nearly as quaffable or smooth as I'd like in this style. Not a bad beer, but I'd imagine this beer, being a delicate style, is 10 times better at the source.

Purchased at the Archer Road Beer Stop, where this was recommended by the owner for being "the best lager produced any where" (for him). BB 04/2008, served chilled in a weizen glass.

A: dark straw hue with great clarity & initially lively fizziness that does soften bit by bit; a thick & spongey white beer head retains its texture quite well, leaving laces behind.
S: sweet and acidic lemony as well as floral notes sit on top of a quiet yet intense doughy note and gristy lager malts... Potent, yet refreshing, very decent for a Helles.
T: a mouthful of deliciously juicy and grainy malts upfront, underlined by more crushed biscuits and toastiness, leading towards a very long finish full of bready flavour and balancing floral hoppiness... Bitterness comes rather clean and attenuated, turning dry-ish in the end, but doesn't affect the overall rounded texture. The lingering aroma of the juicy and mildly "sting-ish" maltiness even reminds me of the aftertaste of a pale bock.
M&D: mildly carbonated and refreshing enough on the texture - this is a very decent Helles with a healthy balance and lovely aftertaste.

A: Poured a very clear, bright yellow with a half-finger creamy white head. Visible carbonation was very high.

S: very light with sweet buttered corn and a light herbal hopping.

T: sweet and buttery corn malt with a fresh, lemon herbal hopping. The hopping was dry on the finish while the flavor ended rather abruptly. Not a lot of layering or complexity regarding flavor, just sweet buttery corn malt and a light herbal hopping.

M: light-medium with a buttery slick texture on the tongue. There was a strong floral hopping and carbonation bite in the swallow.

D: Overall drank like a sweetened festbier, though a tad to much so for multiples. More macro then micro.

Poured a medium straw hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a sweet cereal grain with a smattering of flowery hop.

The taste consisted of an upfront sweet and robust malt. Soft cereal grains dominated. Some earthy floral hops balanced the flavor out.

The mouthfeel was average for the style with a nice creaminess and some residual sweetness.

Overall a very tasty helles. Good representation of the style.
