2004 bottle.

Pours a nice tawny amber. Two fingers of foam, rises and falls with the addition of it's small amount of yeast. Yeast adds a light haze, characteristic of a Weizenbock.

Smell is varied, first bubblegum and clove, airing out into bready malt. Over time the smell deadens, into a kind of musty yeast.

Taste is sweet malt upfront, countered by a cidery tartness that isn't unwelcome. Aftertaste is malty again, with a slight hop bitterness that doesn't show up 'til later. Not as fruity as desired, but yeast esters come thorugh some.

Fairly light and easy to drink in warmer months, would like to try this fresh.

Original Stieglbock Malt Liquor has a thin, off-white head, a mostly hazy caramel color, some descending little brown chunks, and just a bit of lacing left behind. This was a 2008 bottling, by the way. The aroma is strong and gamy- the drinker will encounter an intense, full, brown bread crust and an old, cellared smell. The taste is equally rich- sweet, chewy, gamy, brown bread crust, light molasses, and an adequate hop bite to balance out the cloying malt. Mouthfeel is watery and a earthy, and Original Stieglbock finishes semi-dry, sharp, overly sweet, and delicious. This is a a bold, in-your-face, strong malt liquor. At first, one does not pick up the 7% alcohol, but after a few minutes a blanket of warmth runs down one’s body and your face will feel flushed and hot. This is the real deal. I think everyone should "man up" and check it out!

"2006", not sure what that is supposed to mean, must be 5 years old, interesting since I normally like bocks fresh.

It pours a dark brownish amber. Very nice looking actually. The head is big and foamy and leaves some nice lacing.

The smell is malt up the wazzoo. It smells like an aged can of malt extract or even just a bag of it, just pure malt, no hops.. Not bad, but not the greatest.

It is thick and malty in the flavor, and again, just pure bock-styled malt as the flavor. It actually isn't too sweet though, but it is a one-trick-pony.

A - dark golden. Clear, but not quite crystal clear. Bright White, 1-finger head, slow to disapate.

S - light caramel aroma, slight hint of skunkiness.

T - malty light caramel fairly well balanced, but malt predominates as it should for the style.

M - big body. Not quite syrupy, but the feel makes me expect more sweetness.

D - A little too and too sweet to quaff, but no problem plowing through an 11.2 oz bottle.

this beer pours golden cloudy, nice fulll head. looks a lot like a trappist...smells like one too. good fruity aroma with heavy hint of hops.

smells like it's going to be heavy but it isn't. Very drinkable and light mouthfeel. fruity aftertaste. very refreshing. I would definitely have this one again.

A: actually quite light in color for a bock, a cross between light brown and yellow. Not much of a head and meagre lacing.

S: Caramel, bread, earth, sweetness, figs...

T: All things listed above, along with a nice spicy presence and a touch of hops at the end. Overall, the beer is very smooth.

M/D: good balanced body and a decent carbonation. I like smoothness of this beer, especially from the 7 percent ABV.
Really drinkable!

Light amber with a yellow hue. Thin, white head that fades quickly, leaving some patches and a bubbly ring around the perimeter.
Smell is sweet, heavy malts, with some heavy caramel tones. Faint, nutty tones over some lightly toasted malts come in after.
Taste is sweet, spiced malts. Cinnamon, caramel, and toffee come in, with more toasted, bready malts.
Mouthfeel is faintly crisp, with a smooth and slightly sticky finish. Medium-light body.
Drinkability is decent. The sweet malts are a bit too assertive. Still, it's a pretty good beer.

The bock, from a 500ml bottle, was a surprising lighter pour of clear amber with brown edges, topped off by a small but creamy ivory head. Bits of sheet lace on the Bitburger glass as I progress through it.

Aroma is a different bird too, with a malty booze bomb with hints of orange and caramel. Sweet boozy dominates the quaff too, with a strong malt backbone. A grainy bock, with a smooth and dry finish.

Surprised, but not disappointed with this easy drinking 7% brew.

Consumed 9/25/09- from notes.

16.9oz brown bottle poured into a big glass mug.

A- Nice light amber color with about a one finger white head that settled to a nice skim for the remainder of the glass. Some lacing.

S- A sweet biscuity aroma, very faint malts.

T- Picks up on the malts and drops on the sweetness. A little caramel, a little hoppy at the finish.

M- Sticky and medium bodied, a little dry on the finish.

D- Could definitely go for a couple more of these.

On a side note my great grandfather came to this country from Salzburg so I was excited when I found out where this one was from. I'm sure he would approve.

Oh yeah!!!! mmm, excellent bock beer. Poured with a big, foamy, frothy off white head and a little lace. Lovely medium amber color, but lighter than most bocks I see. Aroma is very beery, malty, and hoppy. Right away in tasting I get malt sweetness that's immediately tempered with plenty of hops for great balance. The mouthfeel goes with it in great carbonation and body. Definite alcohol warming. Could be a session beer but for the strength. Real easy to have at least another though.

Poured a light brown/dark copper under 2 centimeter head that settled to thin layer throughout the drink. Strong malt, earthy grain on the nose and more throughout the taste. Malt was the highlight of this beer for me, sweetness, some light carmel in there with a watered finish with taste of farm/earth/grain though not a detractor. Quite drinkable.

Presentation: Classic 16.9oz German-style brown bottle

Appearance: Dark orange/gold beer with just a hint of sediment and a small white cap

Smell: Sweet, caramelly, with strong fresh grain notes

Taste: Mild caramel and grain, just a touch of alcohol in the back...not bad, but not a lot going on

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied

Drinkability: Meh

Conclusion: Simple, this is a bit overly sweet, and there's not much going on...it's ok, but only ok.

bottled on 10/14/2008.

Light amber color proper amount of head, moderate retention and lacing. Pleasant aroma of biscuits, sweeter malt, raisins(?). Flavor is balanced. Slightly sweet, Autumn like flavors, controlled. Easy to drink several...no booziness. Light carbonation but full on tongue. Can't think of a more drinkable Bock in Europe.

Enjoyed a nice big bottle of this on my recent trip to Der Braumeister. A 16.7 oz bottle poured into a nice, big mug. This beer is a clear, medium golden color. Nice big, white head over an inch thick is present when poured. Settles to a decent surface layer with a nice white ring lining the inside of the glass. Very nice lacing here indeed. A sweet malty and yeast aroma is present. Tastewise it is sweet and malty upfront with bready backbone and a but of nut and perhaps caramel. Followed by a bit of definite hop bitterness, but the sweet flavor certainly dominates. Not the most complex flavors I have ever had in a beer, but this one is damn good! Has a crisp, full bodied mouthfeel with moderate to high carbonation. Do not drink too fast ormuch belching will surely ensue! Other than the high carbonation, it is very easy to drink. Quite enjoyable.

Poured from a big .5L bottle to a Big Glass Mug. The Liquid is light gold with good carbonation. The head is a big fat thumb, white and leaves lots of lace.

The smell is thick fresh bread and a dusting of hops.

The taste is big bold bread and nuts. A splash of alcohol, with a heavy aged cheese finish. This is a hugely under-rated boch. A solid example of a regional treat. But hey I love anything with a goat on the lable. The brew also has a note or 2 found in a lot of BD's from the region, caramel,& toffee. Prosit

The mouth feel is spot on for the style, big thick sticky malt and a quenching zippy carbonation.

The drinkability is great, drink it fresh.

Prosit und zum wohl, MK

Found in a Vienna supermarket, my bottle is green and 33cl small, with a black and red label featuring a ram standing on a rock. Ingredients conform to the purity law. Best before 4/5/07, I opened it on 10/29/06.

Pours a clear amber-tinted gold under a one finger white head that is short-lived, generating neither lace nor trace. Lots of bready grain in the nose, with a hint of fruit. Very prickly and quite light in the mouth. The first taste impression is watery where the malt should be, then a touch of grain emerges with a more persistent grape impresion. Then the alcohol and/or hops kick in, very dry, espresso bitter, climaxing in an achingly raw tone before diminishing to an echo in the aftertaste. The bitter is too metallic, however, to be truly enjoyable. Mediocre experience at best.

A little too light on all fronts to be a serious Dopplebock contender. Perhapse a Maibock or Oktoberfest at best. Even at that, there is a harsh astringency (strained grain) flavor that persists. The beer takes on ripe fruit flavors--very ale-ish. Although not perfect, there is a nice maltiness with this beer with bready, caramelly aromas. The alcohols are largely hidden until the finish. Grainy in the end, but not bad beer.

Vintage 2004. Pours a dull orange with hazed clarity. Creamy three finger head, excellent retention and weak spotty lacing. Apple juice in the nose, with heavy pale malt aromas. Attentuated pale malt upfront, cheap booze flavor- and suitable noble hop bitterness. Dry aftertaste with some fruity ester present, but fairly benign. Medium-full body and lightly carbonated; the apple taste becomes more harsh towards the finish and a slight alcohol warmth develops. This deviates from your typical toasted/caramel doppelbock flavor, but achieves a good balance. However, the estery character would probably be too strong if this were a fresh bottle.
