a - pours black, one-finger tan head, little retention, little lacing
s - smells strongly of coffee and deep roasted malt, only a slight hint of hops, not much alcohol detected
t - tastes a lot like good cold-brewed coffee with a lot less bitterness and easier to drink, not much bitterness or alcohol detectable, got more of a malt presence as it warmed up, finish was full of coffee
m - medium-bodied, not much carbonation, moderately dry finish
d - quite drinkable, could not detect the alcohol much at all and it goes down easy
Very nice offering from Edenton/Big Boss. Coffee dominates the taste a bit much, but it doesn't make it bad...a bigger malt profile would add a bit more complexity, however.

Drank on tap at Horniblow's Tavern on 2/10. Doing my best to remember from the night before. Luckily, this beer stood out, so it shouldn't be too hard.
A: Jet Black, like any good stout.
S: Significant coffee aroma, but not dominating. This is a facile thing to say, but it smells like the Winter Cheer with some coffee added. This is appropriate, as that's exactly what this beer is.
T: Great. One of the best coffee stouts I've ever had, and I like coffee stouts. Well balanced. Coffee is unmistakable, as it should be, but doesn't override all else. It's a little sweet, but not cloyingly so. IMO, coffee stouts should be a little sweet. (I don't drink my coffee black, as you can probably guess)
M: rich and creamy. A little thick, but not too much. Goes down very smooth.
D: This is 8%? Wow, the alcohol is very well masked. Before speaking to one of the brewers to confirm the strength, I would have bet money that this was 6%, max.
Notes: my new favorite coffee stout. I liked it so much I ordered two more. I went with three friends, and we all agreed that it was the best beer on tap that night. I hope someday it gets bottled, but I understand that day is not meant to be soon. Dammit.
- the coffee they used is from Larry's Beans, and Larry makes some great coffee. Good choice on Edenton/Big Boss's part.

Poured from a growler the beer produced a thin dark head that just about completely diminished. No lacing left on the glass. The aroma was definitely coffee. Very abundant coffee taste as well. In my opinion, the coffee addition makes this a much better beer than their Winter Cheer stout, which was a great beer itself. I have been enjoying all of the seasonals Edenton is putting out, and am looking forward to what Big Boss Brewing will be offering in the future.

On-tap at Horniblow's, part of the first batch. Word is that this one is probably Winter Cheer infused with coffee. Brewed with fair trade Larry's Beans from Raleigh. If the recipe changes noticeably after it has been finalized, I'll revise this review.
appearance: The creamy, mocha colored head has nice retention and leaves light lacing on the walls of the glass. The beer is near black in color.
smell: Notes of dark roast coffee, sweet cream, and chocolate dominate the aroma. Low hop presence. Very nice.
mouthfeel: The carbonation is smooth, and on the lower end of the medium range. The body is a lighter full.
taste: Very similar to the aroma. Smooth, creamy, dark roast coffee balanced with roasted malt sugars. Flavors of chocolate covered espresso beans. Low hop presence. Dries out in the finish and leaves a long-lasting coffee flavor.
drinkability: easy
