First I want to say that finding a parking space is tough. Once you find one leave your car there and walk around Asheville. And this was on a Tuesday afternoon. If you look across the road from Barleys you can see Asheville Wine Market. The selection is fair for Asheville, good for anywhere else. They have a very good import selection and only average for local and regional micros. No one asked to help, but it was busy. Did I mention that this was on a Tuesday afternoon. Prices are higher than Greenlife Grocery but about on par with other places I've been. Overall it is a good place to go. If you have the time I would suggest going to Greenlife to get your local and regional micros and then to the Asheville Wine Market to get your Belgiums and other imports.

This store is mainly about its wine, but still managed to squeeze in some quality beer in a corner with a dedicated cooler for some of it. Store is located just south of Barley's just before you start to get into the more happening section of town. A nice clean well lit store mainly dedicated to wine. Selection was decent with almost everything being available in singles.
Selection was less than I expected. Imports were the typical Sam Smith and Lindeman's caliber brews. Mainly British and German beers. Domestic included some Lost Coast, a decent bit of Rogue. Not a huge regional or local selection. Some Cottonwood and some Sweetwater. They did have the entire Highland line which was nice b/c I was able to pick up the ellusive Black Mocha Stout. I'd like to see them really bring in some more NC beers. I went in looking for the Mash House Hoppy Hour IPA since I heard it was in the Asheville area but didn't have any luck. (They had it at the Harris Teeter about 3 miles south of I-40 on Hwy 25...which is the same "highway" this store is on).
Service seemed good. The guy I asked about the Mash house was helpful and was the one that pointed me to the Harris Teeter down the road. They seem to have a resident beer guy there, Alex, but he wasn't around. The other folks seemed nice as well, but not overly beer educated.
Prices seemed good actually. The Mocha Stout bombers were 2.89/ea, a deal if you ask me.

A wine and beer shop with a gourmet food shop next door. There's a few parking spaces on the side and few metered spots out front. Located a few hundred feet from Barely's Taproom and Pizeria is also a bonus, although they're only open until 6:00 (7:00 Thurs & Fri) so get there early.
Very nice store on the inside. Well lit, shinny wood floors, and everything is well organized. I'd say more then 3/4 of the store was wine, but there was a decent beer selection. The selection was decent keeping in mind I was mostly interested in picking up some NC brews, and the whole 6% thing. They had 3-4 highland brews in both 6-packs and bombers, along with two of the Cottonwood brews in 6-packs. Catawba doesn't bottle so I was SOL there. They had a bunch of Left Hand and Rogue bombers as well as some Lost Coast 6ers.There was also a decent selection of British beers along with some German/Czech brews.
The best part about this place is the three doored cooler full of singles. A good mix of most of their selection, although I wish they would have thrown some Cottonwood in there. Speaking of selection I don't think I saw and BMC or even Heinikin or Sam Adams. If you're just visiting like I was this is the only place in town to get singles.
The sevice was good. Although I didn't really have any questions, both times I stopped in I was promptly greeted and asked if I needed any help.
I visited all three beer stores in town due to its easy access and availablity of singles.

The Asheville Wine Market is a piece of cake to locate on Biltmore Avenue just South of Barley's. It is a super clean store and well lit. Very well appointed. The quality of all the beer is very good as well.
Unfortunately the selection just left me a bit numb. I expected more from such a beer rich town. They had a few German beer selections and just a few Regionals and NC breweries, but nothing too special. The service was good, I was asked a few times if I needed assistance.
I would return, but not expecting as much and mainly since it is so darn easy to get to and they do have a few beers around warm, in the cooler, and single bottles to boot. Bring in the NC micros and the Regionals and that 3.5 could go to a 4.5 really quickly.

Interesting store in an interesting town. The majority of the store is wine, however beer does have a good section. There was a cooler with cold beer, and a decent area with packs. Selection seemed to have a good balance of regional, along with other beers, and imports. One of the employees told us that the limit on alcohol % for beer is currently 6.0%, so that is one reason why the selection is not as large as hoped. Still, this seemed to be the best selection in the area. The staff was very friendly, and eager to talk beer. He even gave us a case discount. The inside is a nice open space, where they were playing jazz music. I would recommend stopping in here if you should find yourself in the area.
