Pours a one finger khaki head that fades slowly leaving some lace. Clear deep amber/ruby color. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Fruity caramel nose and flavor is sweet not so dark fruit and caramel. Not cloying. Higher ABV is hidden. $2.49 for a 12oz bottle from Beverage Warehouse Winooski, VT.

Sampled on January 16, 2012. It pours medium amber with red highlights when held to the light. The head is about a half-inch thick and it leaves nicde, clinging lacing. The aroma has a more mellow malt character aloing with yeast and something like toffee. The hop notes are limited but it is not boozy. The body is medium to slightly heavy. I wonder if this one was stored prior to release because for a Barleywine it is very mellow and pleasant. The malts are not overwhelming and the hops tend to be only slightly bitter and a little on the dry side. A nice Barleywine for certain.

Pours a fizzy almost 1 finger head that fades at a slower pace, some lacing, over dark ruby maroon brown colored beer with a bit of yeast at the bottom.

Nose is interesting, it starts with a vanilla and oak like aroma, and a nutty hazelnut, quite a bit of hazelnut, french vanilla, kinda like a flavored coffee mix. Then molasses, caramel, reddish malts galore, plenty of toffee as well, then dark fruits, bit of fig and raisin, and some brandy like, and candy syrup, and just a bit of bitter earthy hops.

Taste starts with more dark malts and sweet flavors, tons of toffee, caramel, molasses, candy syrup, and more of the nutty flavors, hazelnut loaded again, and a bit of vanilla. Quite sweet, chewy malt like taste, and reddish brown toasty malts. A bit oxidized for some reason, then herbal bitter hops. Malts also bring a biscuit like toasty malt, and a bit syrupy. A hint of booze comes through with some warmth and slight esters, as well as more dark fruit like fig and raisin, and a light brandy flavor. Finishes fairly sweet still but drier than before, a nice warming booze feel, more syrupy flavors and toasty biscuit malts, and plenty of hazelnut and caramel malt flavors, and some earthy chewy hop bitterness.

mouth is a bit bigger bodied, decent carb, some warming booze.

Overall not bad, some nice malt flavors, although a bit oxidized, and hops were probably more dominant fresh. On top of that the hazelnut doesn't sit as well as it could. But still drinkable and a decent barleywine. Quite a bit of candy and sweet syrupy additions, which isn't a bad thing.

I got this as an extra in a trade, glad I didn't buy it. Basically, the label art is great, the beer is not.

A: Pours a deep dark amber that remains transparent with lots of bubbles that produced a 1+ finger head and exhibited some lacing.

S: Sweet caramel malts, I think? I could barely smell anything.

T: First sip was like the smell, sweet and subtle. The following were medicated and sour. Overall pretty poor.

M: Slightly mentholated with some carbonation.

O: Not so good, what else can I say. Go back to the drawing board please.

Thanks to SFLpunk for this one. Poured into a snifter, this brew pours a murky brown color with a thin tan cap across the top that quickly recedes to a few scarce bubbles around the edge of the glass. Rising bubbles of carbonation hardly form a lace across the top, even a swirl hardly forms more than a few spots of lace on the glass. When held to the light, there is a deep ruby color throughout the body.

The smell of this brew is deep and fruity with a smell of something very similar to currants. It has a tangy, almost wild aspect that is quite familiar to some wild ales. Maybe a touch of lacto, sulfur and cheesy funk. Fusel to solvent alcohol runs through the back of the nose with a bit of a numbing quality. The nose finishes with minor notes of chocolate and raisins with a final touch of tangy alcohol.

The taste is a big let down. Not totally bad per-say in a typical and expected barleywine sort of way but a let down in that I really thought this was going to be wild based off of the nose. The flavor of this brew greets the mouth with a warming taste of solvent alcohol, minor fruit notes akin to pear and apples with faint notes of chocolate and raisins. The alcohol is quite bold in both flavor and warming factor. Hops seemingly non-existent throughout. Lightly musty aftertaste of chocolate grain.

For a brew that showed little to no visual carbonation, it comes on in full assault when swirled around in the mouth yet seems watery and lacking the body of a barleywine. This brew is bold with alcohol with a fizzy and lively level of carbonation in the mouth with a medium to almost light body. This is really a strange take on a barleywine. An absolute flip-flop of the senses when comparing the aroma to the taste. I found the aroma of this brew to be the most enjoyable aspect while the flavors are a bit dull. If the aroma of this brew is any indicator of what the flavor of this example could become, sign me up for several bottles of this to age. As-is though it is pretty average.

A - Nice pourability. Deep mahogany color. Slight yellow head.

S - Very cherry! Lots of dark sweetness in this brew! Smells awesome! Could be a sour. Interesting for a B-Wine

T - Big cherry and apricot fruit! Lots of interesting flavor. Not your typical BWine. Not sure it classifys...

M - Great carbonation! Zero bitterness and wonderful sweetness! Quite dry too.

O - Awesome brew! Just not sure it meets BWine classification...More of a fruit beer. Super glad i got to try this brew! I'll be looking for more from Trout Rive. Given a "3" for true to style...

Poured a nice dark rich red color with a 1 finger tannish head. Head was gone in minutes, leaving just a small ring and slight bit of lacing in the middle. Small amount of sediment was visible. Aroma was nicely sugary sweet. Bits of smoke were picked up, as well as fruits. Perhaps a touch of vanilla as well. Flavor was very contrasting. Strongly tasted of alcohol and bitter berries. Felt thin and watery in the mouth. Didn't coat at all like a good barleywine should. Overall a very disappointing barleywine. The best thing was the flavor, the rest was pretty much forgetful.

Pours hazy reddish brown with half finger light sand color head.

At first I smelled the bottle and thought, damn smells shitty. After the pour it kind of smelled similar to a triple with big malty fruits and hints of spice. Not getting much in terms of hops.

Eh. I really really wanted to give this beer a chance, especially because I enjoyed the art, but here its eh. Malty fruity candy then you can sense the yeast and some grains. There is a subdued bitter.

Mouthfeel is not there. Light medium, iffy carbonation.

Not impressed. Expected more, it seems incomplete. Dig the artwork though.

Grabbed a bottle of this new arrival to Mass today at Julios. Boneyard Barleywine pours out a hazy rose color, with about a finger of white heading. The nose has some fresh grain, and a very nice fruity backbone. An interesting yeast aroma comes through as well. The taste begins with a nice melding of hops and malt, showcasing some nice bready texture and fruity finish. It does hit a bad note in the finish though, with a somewhat mild sour twang. Mouthfeel is a highpoint here in that it is very well balanced, and the alcohol is hidden rather well. Overall I think this brew could use some tweaking, but it is definitely worth a try. I really dig the labels as well. Cheers

A- Dark red ale out of the bottle and into an oversized wine glass. Small light tan head forms briefly but it doesn't retain well. A small ring fails to lace the glass.

S- The aroma is somewhat strange to me. It has heavy buttery, caramel and fruit notes. The fruit kind of reminds me of fruit loops or something.

T- Raisin, dark fruit, caramel and buttery notes dominate the flavor. Once again the fruit is odd to me, almost like grape pits and cherry. It all comes together and has a candy sort of flavor. A bit of spicy, earthy hops.

MF- Silky body with smooth moderate carbonation. Slight bitters and some alcohol warmth. I guess the fruit reminds me of a very fruity wine, which didn't do it for me with the other strong ale flavors.

Just doesn't bring it like other Barleywines, the flavors are out of balance and don't come together well.

Slippery lace from a nearly non-existent head. Does leave some ring lace. Very cloudy, brown color liquor.

Sweet, nearly molasses aroma.

Very rich body with a relatively low carbonation. The sweetness shows up strongly. Nearly no hop presence. A little too coy for my tastes and I'd prefer a lot more hop bitterness to balance this out.

12 fl oz brown bottle served in a chalice.

Dark oak with shades of burgundy-tinted maple. Faint, off-white head that struggles to hold its form. A few traces of short-lived lacing.

Creamy toffee and sweet vanilla aromas. Sherry-esque alcohol quality that adds a bit of sharpness to the sweet, rich nose. Touches of fresh red apple and grape; mild orange peel as well.

Biscuit malts that are only slightly enhanced by vanilla, caramel, and mild toffee flavors. The breadiness is almost akin to a buttery, English Pale Ale. Note of plum, red apple, and raisin at mid-sip that are followed by an overwhelming, slick bourbon. The alcohol presence is bulky and thins out all of the preceding flavors.

A full, medium in body. Active due to slight over-carbonation and thin as a result of the alcohol effect.

Not quite offensive, but missing a lot of flavor qualities that are inherent in a Barleywine

12 ounce bottle, with out brew date nor vintage info. Picked up as part of a six pack at City Market in Burlington, VT.

Pours darker honey amber, minor dark tan head, and just a few lace blobs left on the glass.

Caramel and peppery alcohol tendrils in the nose.

More caramel, light smoke, more alcohol, some rum soaked rasins. A wee bit on the thin side both flavor and body wise for the style.

Ehh, middle of the road barley wine, nothing special...sort of a decent summer sipper/nightcapper due to the lighter body of this one.

Got this as an extra from aapp. Cheers!

A- Pours a deep reddish brown color with a thin white foam head that settles to a ring. Minimal lacing.

S- Dark fruits, spicy hops, and plenty of caramel sweetness makes up the nose.

T- Some bitterness initially with a round malt finish. The alcohol is noticeable adding some heat and body.

M- Full bodied with decent carbonation.

O- Overall, a very enjoyable brew. Would be interesting to try this one with some age due to the large alcohol presence in the flavor.

Thanks to Conor for this 12oz bottle.

Pours a hazy dark amber that shows through a bright cloudy orange in the light. The head is small and recedes to a collar quickly leaving no lacing.

Aroma is subdued and not exactly what one would expect from a barleywine. Light caramel malts and some roasted character and maybe some dark fruits, raisins maybe.

The taste is sweet with apples and raisins up front and caramel malts in the background. Very light flavors for a barleywine with a bitter finish.

The mouthfeel is light for a barleywine with soft carbonation.

This is a fairly average barleywine with an overpowering sweetness with little underlying complexity. Not bad but nothing memorable.

12oz bottle poured into a chalice.

Pours a light brown that's really clear with a small white head. Nose is light and malty and sharp.

Taste is tart and crisp and really malty. There's sharp clean mouthfeel with a sharp finish that's a bit bitter but well done.

Tried for the first and only time (so far) at a Brewfest. The 3oz pour was a redish clear ale. It was as close as one can come to drinking a raisin. The tasting was perfect for a cool, crisp fall day in the moutains.

I will be on the hunt to find this w/out the long drive to the Brewery.

This beer has eluded me for years, partially owed to my laziness of not visiting this brewery (sorry dudes!).

This beer pours a mild garnet/beet red color with a one-finger head into my snifter.

Hints of caramel and raisin follow the warmth that makes its' presence well known.

The taste? Sweet with raisin, light malted caramel and alcohol warmth. Complex flavors mingle in the mouth, especially that of a sweetish finish.

Its a little thin for the style, kind of a cousin to ridgerunner of sorts.

If you feel offended by that last line, don't be: It's an excellent beer that would age well. Perhaps it's like the world that eluded the old man: a beer best enjoyed with no pretensions and hype.

Big thanks to RB's own Dickinsonbeer for bringing this to Throwdown 3. Pours a dirty hazy copper with light tan head. The aroma is very un barleywine like with tart sourness and mild maltiness way in the background. I also get a hint of funk in the nose too. The taste is much the same as the aroma with an initial burst of tartness then some mild funk. This is not really a classical barleywine flavor. There are tart fruity notes for a moment here and there that hint toward hidden dark fruity esters that are a staple of the style. Interesting and enjoyed.
