Poured a clear yellow with a constant stream of bubbles and a thin white head that persisted almost the entire time. The smell was clean, with hints of pear, yeast, and faint citrus. The taste was of pear, with a very slight astringency at the end. Very refreshing. It was light in the mouth, with moderately high carbonation. This was a very smooth and drinkable beer, especially for the somewhat high ABV. I'd definitely drink it again.

Poured from a 75 cl bottle into a goblet. Bottle purchased in France.

A - Burnished gold, orange tinge. Beer is crystal clear. Head is white, fluffy and mouse-like. Very thick and persistent. Many streams of tiny bubbles rising through the glass constantly.

S - Aroma of earthy and grassy hops dominate with a minor note of pilsner-like grain. Simple, direct but very clean aroma.

T - Flavors are more balanced between malt and hops than the aroma. The earthy and grassy hops are slightly lower in intensity than the bready, nutty malt. Hops bitterness is low. There is some orange, but it could be from hops, spicing or yeast--don't know. Like the aroma, the flavors are not very complex, but all are good.

M - Moderate body. Carbonation is soft and creamy. Alcohol is not noticeable.

O - This beer is soft, creamy and clean. It is not too complex and doesn't stand out in any particular area, but it is a very enjoyable and well-made Biere de Garde.

750ml bottle served in a regular glass.

A: Pours a dark yellow to orange color. A bit cloudy. Forms a medium, creamy and very persistent white head with lots of lingering lacings formed and left in the glass

S: Sweet and very grainy. Fruity, bready and and a little bit spicy. Quite Belgian character which is common on the French ch'ti beers. Also light notes of honey and flowery hops

T: Follows the nose as a quite sweet and malty beer. Fruity esters. Strong notes of bready and earthy yeasts, again, Belgian character. Also some notes of honey and spices which reminds a classic Belgian Triple. End is dry with a mild hoppy bitterness

M: Full body. A bit molasses. Good carbonation to the style. Sweet and grainy aftertaste

O: Average beer and drinkability. Not bad for a French

Got it because it was a french beer and I was all: Say whaaaa?1?!?!?1 The French only make wine! Let's see how it is.

A: Pretty average. Light clear amber. Little head dissipates quickly. Some lacing remains.

S: Very fruity. Big grape note. Malty. Maybe some orange. A little mustiness is nice.

T: Fruit comes through big at first. A sweetness follows that seems a little unbalanced and gritty. Fades to a bit of bittereness which is ok. A watery finish is a real let down.

M: Carbonation is powerful and a light glassy finish. Sits a bit too light.

Overall the first sip I had of this was great: lots going on with the sweetness and the bitter and the various earthy and musty notes. But as I got more into the beer a lot of the weaknesses began to come through. Its a pretty light beer which doesn't pair will with the big flavor notes. Certainly better than an average beer but not blowing my mind.

BA says 7.2% but the bottle says 7.8%.
pours a nice golden color with a billowy, heavenly foam. some nice lacing on the sides and very active carbonation rising from the center of the bottom of the Duvel tulip glass- probably from the etching.
smell at first has a lager-y, heineken/stella aroma, but more subtle.
taste matches the smell to a degree, but also has some mild fruit and sweetness. kind of like a cross between a belgium ale and a heineken. easy bitterness at the end. reminds me of the french cigarretes a tried years ago- full flavor, a little raspy, a little raw, but makes a statement. there seems to be a tiny amount of sediment at the bottom which i instinctively swirl and pour from my training of the Franziskaners. i've heard this isnt always what i should do, however. the sediment does seem to add a very good-tasting bitterness, though.
medium bodied and continued carbonation in the glass, but not bubbly in the nose.
overall, i really like the look of this beer. the taste is subdued compared to what i expect it could taste like (comparing to equally tasting brews, this could be a lot 'stronger' tasting, i think), and who really expects much from the french anyway? their domain lies in other areas.... considering i've been dealing with an unusual bout of insomnia and looking for the antidote here, i was expecting a stronger, bitter/sweet taste due to the higher abv and i'm finding i really like this. i have had it before but it it didnt st ick out enough for me to remember any of the qualities and i'm paying much more attention to the taste now. for the OVERALL score, i suppose i wish there were a medium score available between an 80 and 90 because this is where i am stuck... perhaps a refill will help . . . . the obligatory eruction (burp) helps me decide- i'll give it a 4.5 due to the 'manly' taste.... but the 'scoring' part is always difficult. most brews have their own special 'presence', do they not? only the 'commercial' products pretty much are put out for the masses and there are some good ones, but mostly crafted to appeal to the masses. the tasting is difficult for me because a brewer puts in what he thinks will be special and if it gets past his standards then it's a product worthy of scoring. some breweries put out beers (like Stone's chipotle and vanilla) which, more or less, seem to satisfy a need to put forth a 'collection', regardless of how good it might be. and for those it just doesnt seem like it was a great bit of work put forth in the battle cry of pride but more for a profit. maybe the lack of sleep is kicking in . . . . prost!

Bottled 7/28/11.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Thin rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, fruits, and grape juice. Taste is much the same with a very sweet and fruity flavor. There is a slight alcohol kick with each sip as well. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is pretty tasty and easy to drink.
