A - Sliver of orange. Tall tight tan head

S - Mild malts and cocoa. Mild but nice

T - Roasted malts with some dark fruit. Mild bitter hit

M - Thick with good coating, howver it seemed bubbly like a cola

O - a lot of potential but it falls a little short

About the most distinctive flavor of dark roasted barley I can remember. Nice balancing act between the sweet malt and the black charred flavors. Near black with a brown edge in the Leffe goblet. Nice and sudsy with a fine carbonation on the tongue. I like this more as I sip on it. Really a big mouthful of flavor. Nose of caramel with some hoppy resins. Moderate bitterness. A little sour burnt malt taste, but just enough to give it an edge.

22 oz bottle from Beer Revolution in Oakland. Not a bad deal for $4.99.

22 oz bottle, no freshness date, poured into pint glass

Visual: Pours black with a cream-tan head.

Nose: Butter-bread, dark chocolate, caramel, followed by a spicy astringency.

Taste: Mild coffee, toasted grain, sweet berries (jam like sweetness), chocolate.

Mouth: Medium body, light middle, leaves sticky.

Overall: I like it. Up front the taste is pretty good. I especially like the berry sweetness; however, my palate grew immune to the taste midway through the beer.

Poured a dark brown color with a little tan foam and a little bit of lace on side of the glass from first sip to last gulp! The smell of roasted coffee and spice had a pleasant aroma. The taste of roasted coffee (a little bitter) was evident, along with roasted malts and some kind of spice.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours black with a medium off-white to tan head. Some good lace. Solid retention.

S: Dark chocolate, hint of roast with some coffee, charcoal, straightforward porter smell.

T: Dominated by dark chocolate with a hint of creamed coffee. Subtle balancing hops work and make a delicious easy drinking porter beer.

M: Medium-bodied, smooth, soft carbonation, easy on the palate.

D: Just solid. A textbook American porter, nothing great here, but good drinking pint.

I have had this at the restaurant in Point Reys Station and in the bottle from the grocery in Point Reys Station.

This is one of the two best Porters I have ever tasted in my life. It is so smooth and creamy with a distinct coffee with vanilla and caramel overtones.
It is very dark and will not pass direct sunlight. It has a perfect head and holds it really well. It is so easy to drink it is like drinking iced coffee.

My only dislike is the price since it usually sells for $6.00 a bottle.
CAUTION - Do not buy this beer if it has not been refrigerated from the time it was made until you drink it. If left on the shelf at room temperature it will go bad in short order. The Bev-Mo in Encinitas refuses to refrigerate it and I refuse to buy it unrefrigerated. I have complained to Marin Brewing to no avail.

Pours a very deep brown with a creamy toffee colored head. Lots of malt in the nose, reminiscent of chocolate chip cookies--interesting!

Lots of roast malt and coffee at the beginning but it's the subtle hops that linger on the finish.

My only complaint is that this particular one is over carbed--could be the bar (but it's Fathers Office in LA so that's a rare thing if it's their doing).

Will try again in bottle should I come across it!

Pours a luxurious deep brown to almost black with gigantic tan head. Nose is outright amazing with roasty malts, and some bacon bits like aromas too from all the roast. Lighter bodied than anticipated, but there's a smooth and rich roasty flavor that carries through nicely. It's surprisingly drinkable for all that roastiness. Nice beer.

On-tap and Blue Palms Brewhouse. Served in a nonic.

Chocolate-tinged seal brown body with a slender creamy tan head. Very pretty gradient of lacing, no legs, average retention.

Even at a chilly draught temperature, the heavy roast notes snake their way around your olfactory nerves. Fresh roast coffee, light cocoa, and hints of hazelnut. Rather straight-forward, but spot on for the style. Hints of cream come out as the beverage warms.

The aroma carries over directly into the flavor - coffee, roast malt, cocoa, nuts, with the addition of bitterness not present in the nose. Lush, mineral-heavy, toasty finish that lingers on for quite some time. Again, somewhat one-note, but it is a good note!

Fairly light bodied, with enough astringency to keep you from rushing through a pint. Good carbonation. A little less astringency and a sessionable ABV might improve things here.

Not as distinguished as some of its peers, this is a great (if somewhat generic) example of the style.

*EDIT: September, 2010* - This ale improves substantially on-cask, gaining a richness and depth of flavor while minimizing any mediocre qualities, definitely sample it in this modality if you get a chance!

Sample at the Most Honorable SuperHappyFun Stout Tasting. Bottle from Bevmo in Palmdale, CA. This brew pours the color of a cold cup of coffee with a medium khaki head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of coffee, burnt malt and some dark chocolate. Medium, dry body with notes of coffee, dark fruit and toasted malt. The finish is burnt malt with a lingering hoppy taste left over. Above average overall.

On tap at the brewpub. Poured into a pint glass. Comes in at 6.2%.

A-It was a tad dark at the pub, but based on the lighting it looks black. It has a half finger sandy head that is the result of a short pour. Not much lace is left.

S-Lots of malt. It is equal parts sweet chocolate and roast malt. As it warms it begins to smell more like a mocha with some extra chocolate thrown in. Hard to pick up on the hops.

T-Lots of sweet chocolate malt hits first. The roast malt provides a really nice backnone. The sweet malt is more prominent throughout each sip and the roast malt really shines after it has gone down. As it warms I do get a touch of lemon sourness.

M-A fuller bodied beer that is not overly heavy. It is nicely carbonated, smooth, and finishes dry.

D-A very good porter for those that like a sweeter porter.

Always enjoy this beer. Deserves all of the accolades that it has collected over the years.
