A - Pours into snifter glass with moderate head retention; density is only finger-thick. Tan to light brown in color, that hovers over clear copper liquid (SRM 13). Carbonic activity seems quite pronounced, though despite this, head is now roused much upon swirling. Thin film remains.

S - Sweet caramel mixes well with dried fruit (raisins). Vinous in aroma, this delightful sweetness mixes with a mild biscuity note to help balance out the syrupy fruits.

T/M - Medium body that consists of syrupy dried fruit and a toasted/fluffy mouthfeel. The Wheat malt provides the fluffy aspect and the Crystal malt adds the toasted profile. Finishes slightly wet, though the hops bring about a bitter dry (35 IBU) aspect to it. Hops are mild in comparison the the malty profile, which is appropriate for the style. It could be that molasses was added in small quantities to the beer, which would help explain the slightly syrupy profile and sweetness, though not sure. Maris Otter malt very much adds to the complexity of this treat!

D/C - Despite adjuncts, the beer is 5% ABV and doesn't fatigue the palette much. Alcoholic effects are quite mild and the beer is definitely something I could drink over the course of a long weekend. I'm picturing a small stone pub in northern England with snow falling on the sidewalks outside and people crammed into a small dimly lit room. Definitely not a Scotch Ale, or Barleywine, but this beer provides just enough warmth to let you know it's not summer anymore and yet light enough to be drunk in warmer climates as well. I'll definitely be looking for more of these :)

Prost!

Bottle. Clear amber with no head.
Malty aroma. Muted English hops. Some light spice and biscuit.
It has a light fruity pudding flavour reminiscent of spotted dick.
Medium body and carbonation.
The name is amusing.

16.9oz bottle with a code that doesn't make sense.

It's a cheery red brown beer with not much of a head when poured straight down. The bubbles are creamy and tan.

Slightly soapy, minty, nutty, understated in that English way.

Sweet balanced by earthy, nutty malt. Dark caramel and a little herby hop flavor.

Substantive body, a bit rich. Creamy and definitely fitting to be sipped by a crackling fire.

This beer is very English, with it's subtle aroma and malt focus. It goes down easily and I could see myself choosing to have two or three in the cold.

Lovely clear brown pour...reddish hints. Nose very disappointing...same stale EKG hops profile as nearly every other English pale ale. Boring. Taste was a pleasant surprise however. Rich malt, some raisins, and dates, with good mouthfeel. A little biscuit would have really given this the full flavor package, but you can't have everything. Nice beer.
NOTE - ABV is 6% on my bottle (Dec 2014), so possibly this is a recipient change giving it a little more substantial feel.

L: beautifully clear almond brown liquid with a messy foam that struggles to lift and eventually settles out into a thin, sloppy cap

S: all you hope to smell... hint of fresh wheat bread and dried grass... core of lightly toasted caramel and a wisp of berry-like esters... hops do come through, providing a bit of bush to the mound

T: certainly wasn't expecting the dramatic shift to its vibrant fruitiness over the malts - highlighted with notes of cherry, dried cranberry... the caramel catches up on the back end and gradually builds its lingering flavor mid-palate... not decidedly bitter or sweet, but instead has a nice balance of a little of each, combining for a bold overall taste... bit drier in the finish than you'd expect, with a little bit of herbal bitterness in the aftertaste

F: certainly a lovely rich roll to its medium-full body... mellow degree of carbonation... lends to slow sipping

O: quite enjoyable... I was also impressed with taste of their XXXB... more depth and flavor than the lot of similar bottled English ales we get over here

A random find at the Camp Hansen Shoppette, Okinawa.

A - Pours a copper turned redder complexion with two fingers of creamy head.
S - Smells of sweet malts and baking soda.
F - A bitter/sour malt backbone almost plays off like a an Oud Brune, dry hops continue in the background and into the aftertaste. Cranberry's, dark grape, currants, and other fruits trending in that direction....
M - Body is medium to heavy, with a medium bubble carbonation and some stickiness.

Overall I do appreciate this offering from Batemans and would recommend you to try it if you see it this holiday.

25 oz. brown glass bottle, dated "3256 11:07"
$4.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Nice appearance with a clear deep copper / russet brown body, but little head. Aroma is malty with a bit of grassy, earthy, minty hops. Flavor follows. Beautiful malt component! Hop flavors are almost "lacquered" upon the malt - rich and fulfilling, and beautifully "English" in nature. Gentle fruitiness from the yeast includes pear and apple as well as some dried, dark skinned fruits. Also mineralish. Solidly bitter, and drying in the finish. Superb!!!

A: Clear dark ruby like a tawny port. Small rim of an off-white head. Pours out very gloopy.
S: Nice and syrupy. Some bubblegum.
T: Bitter backbone, almost to a harsh level. Very sharp and also a bit sour. Otherwise, nice soft soapy hops and a hint of warming syrup, although it's dry. As it approaches room temperature some vanilla and subtle caramel appears. The finish is a bit too bitter.
O: Apart from the unpleasant bitter/sour finish it's quite nice.
